I love that wallpaper feature, especially as an out-of-the-box feature.

Think of it like this. You have a bunch of distros. A distro gives you a desktop environment or window manager (unless its command line only), layout and themes for that desktop environment, drivers (so your hardware works), a package manager allowing you to install software and finally a collection of software. A distro is basically a starting point for your own Linux experience. You can get a distro, change the desktop environment, add and remove software and so on until you're happy.

Yes I duel booted it with windows 7 a while ago before I replaced it with Ubuntu gnome 13.04. I installed it to a 2nd internal hard drive though because I'm always cautious about the risks of partitioning one drive with your main os on it. My friend Daniel dual booted windows 7 with Ubuntu then adjusted the partition size post installation which corrupted 80% of all his files. He lost lots of work and had to reinstall windows 7. He's now got linuphobia...

@LeorFlor11 жыл бұрын

@PinguyUser11 жыл бұрын
It all depends on what you expect. Pinguy OS has a lot of software installed by default. Can you get windows 7 to work at full speed on a pc designed to work with windows xp? To be fair in the video they do run the test distro on the same pc, so can make a fair statement about how it runs compared to other tested distros.
@74ryanwolf11 жыл бұрын

Looking back on some of your videos it reminds me of what I used in the past, starting with MS-DOS 3.1, then to windows 3.0 then 3.1, then 95, 98, 98se, refused me, then xp, now 7. (at least you didn't confuse your mum more in the dos 6.22 segment with command line piping which even most users back then didn't know how to do) a P75 system my father had came with MS Bob on top of win95 LOL q-basic infinite loop? -ctrl- -C- or -ctrl- -break- Now, next appropriate segment, Windows 3.5

Though your mom is familiar with various Windows versions, I would be interested in her feedback regarding Windows NT4 with SP3 or later. NT4 was, in my opinion, the best UI Microsoft ever produced due to its simplicity and speed; I wonder how someone unfamiliar with it might react to it. It would be interesting to hear your mom's reaction to its interface. Keep in mind, I'm referring to NT4's original UI, not Active Desktop (you could upgrade NT4's UI to 'Active Desktop' after installing IE4)

That's why I like the idea of the AUR (Arch User Repository). People from anywhere can compile source code for Arch and release it as a repo that can be installed and uninstalled exactly the same way as the official repos, potentially making the pool of open source software for Arch larger than that of Ubuntu/Debian. Too bad Arch is a pain in the ass (specifically with setting up X11 and wifi)...
@jakerobbins31411 жыл бұрын
Phillip, I've been considering switching to Linux but can't decide which current distro to use. From what I've heard, Ubuntu and Mint are the most popular but I'm afraid I'll pick one and won't know what I'm doing. I'm in no way a techie/programmer/IT guy, but I know my way around Windows/Mac OS. Web browsing, doing work/schooling, and a Steam game here and there. There are just so many and I know nothing about it. Does it matter what kind of computer I own?

Linux can have security programs like ClamAV (anti-virus), and firewalls (but nowadays, ISPs give you routers with built in firewalls). However, most of the time they're simply not needed. You can run linux perfectly fine without security tools (and indeed I do)
