I can understand your feelings on the opening, for sure. But I would say he wasnt serious about the "marry when your 16" thing. That was more of a "whatever" thing since she was dying. The idea of "yeah sure look forward to that in a few years." Make sure to live that long etc.

I agree, it was a way to brush her off without her feeling rejected. It's like telling her to live longer. even she knew she wasn't gonna make it and called him a "meanie". the 16yr old thing was probably the age in Japan when the manga was written, so it looks worse. it's 18 now I believe.

The big thing about when the Doctor told Sarina he'd consider marrying her when she was 16 and her reaction calling him a meanie...is that they bothknew there was no chance she was going to live to see 16.
@dowfreak7
@dowfreak7 11 ай бұрын
It's like a child telling her dad she'll marry him one day. Sarina isn't a toddler, but she's closer to that kind of love profession than to understand what actual real love required for a marriage is. People get weirdly hung up on this as if it's really hard to understand. Going as far as to completely twist the story into something else just to make their headcanon work.

I don't think the doctor really wanted to date Sarina when she turned 16. I think that was just his gentle way of turning down a sick little girl that had been thinking a lot about dying in way that made her think about having a future. Because I don't think either one of them actually thought she was going to live to 16. That's why she called him a meanie when he said it.

Japanese Civil Code used to state that the minimum marriage age was 18 for men and 16 for women. When the manga first went out, 16 was the legal age for women to get married. That sentence translates into "when you grow up," and he said this to a girl who is unlikely to live for that long. (However, following the change in adulthood in Japan from April 1st, 2022, it has become 18 for both men and women.) Meanwhile, the 'Idol' culture is very strange and unique. If you are a Christian, you would instantly feel this term is different from celebrity; Idols are dehumanized objects of worship. You will witness a lot of consumption and dehumanization of people in the following part of the show. This industry norm is prevalent in East Asia.

Great reactions, as always! About the "marriage" part, I assumed it was more of a way of him saying "first live till you are 16, then I will consider your proposal", and, taking into consideration that 16 is the age of consent in Japan, and, untill recently, girls were allowed to get married with parents approval by that age, it makes somewhat sense instead of him saying "maybe after you're 18, 21, etc". But ofc, I completly understand it feeling disgusting for anyone and as the morally criticable part of the law or cultural aspects of Japan itself its still something apart, but I just thought that looking from that perspective could help it somehow sit a bit more well with you guys. Excited to see more reactions from this show!!!

If you properly follow the context, you would realize what the doctor meant by ‘16’ yrs old. He is telling her to live long past that age thus the ‘meanie’ reply. However 16 yrs old is the legal age to marry for girls in Japan. You don’t have to agree with it, I dont either. BUT (Contrary to belief) the west doesn’t get to decide for the rest of the world what’s right or wrong.

Another less fun fact is the family name of Ai, 'Hoshi-no', is close to the word 'Hoshii' meaning crave/desire/want; and the no (の) particle is used to connect nouns together. The first name 'Ai' by Kanji means 'Love'. So you put the full name together and then get emotional damage.

For those of you who have seen episode 1, please watch the music video for the theme song "IDOL" again. I believe you will have a completely different reaction from before because you will understand why this music video has such a unique music composition, why the visual design is like this, and why the lyrics are crafted in such a way. And you will be moved by it. There is also an official English version sung by himself. The incredible aspect of this seemingly unnatural English translation is that it not only aligns with the sounds of the Japanese language but also with the meaning of the story. Furthermore, after listening to the Japanese version several times, when you listen to the English version, there are parts where it sounds like Japanese despite being in English. This part of the lyrics sounds Japanese for some reason. ENG"That emotion melts"=JPN"daremoga mewo". ENG"Completely deny"=JPN"kanpekijanai"

The doctor is sussy with his fixation on a 16 year old idol as a grown man, but when he tells Sarina that he'll seriously consider marrying her at 16... it's because he's her doctor and knows her prognosis. That's why she says he's mean, and why he tells her the plan is practical. They both know that sick as she is at 12, she has no hope of living anywhere near 4 more years. Honestly, other than Ai getting stabbed, Sarina fading out of the room and the hard cut to her funeral is probably what took me off guard the most when I first watched this. Having finished the season, I'm still struck by how brutal this show is for introducing and killing off a 12 year old in the first 10 minutes when the author is the same person who brought us the comedy that is Kaguya.

I love y'all watched you since the channel started, even subbed to Patreon when I can... But christ was the bashing the doctor getting annoying, you've hearted comments about the Sarina's comment (the wait until you're 16) so I won't go into how that's not a creepy comment and meant to be more of a "try to live/fight your sickness". The thing with Ai herself that you have to understand and why I'm getting bored of you making "16 year old" comments, that's the majority of America's age of consent, over 30 of your states, much like Europe, Asia so on. Is it odd? Sure. But y'all wouldn't say a single word if they said she was 18. I love y'all's reactions, and I genuinely believe you try to understand tropes and other cultures, but for the love of god stop slyly inferring the MC was a pedo for something that he didn't even do, and had he wouldn't be pedophillia or a crime in 99% of the world? We know he liked her cause of Sarina's obsession that he continued for her, then being in an isolated countryside probably idly found her to be cute/attractive. He clearly carries out proper medical practice, which probably included observing her vulva, without her once being weirded out, nor him acting out of place. He's not a creep, the beginning more than anything is a ode to a respectful fan who is into you vs the stalker who shows us how the real creeps are... Anyways I look forward to watching future episodes, but for the love of god I hope the pedo comments stop.

At least at the time this manga was written, the age of consent/marriage is 16. That's why that age is used in the story so much. It's young af, but legal. Just to note, Goro/Aqua's feelings on Ai are a bit weird, and that's very much intentional. The whole pregnancy and lie things probably make it clear already, but this show is really good at dealing with heavier and more subjective themes, be it regarding social aspects or the psychology of the characters. So whenever you see a character that seems weird or unhealthy, chances are it'll be an important plotpoint for their development.

@@tigerwoods3729 You make a good point. Many stories make mc's intentionally bad or morally ambiguous people for the purpose of the story and hating them is meant to happen. However, in this case the author is intentionally setting the doctor up to be a super fan and not a pedo. He doesn't express sexual attraction to AI before or after reincarnation, he chooses not to nurse, he bad mouths ruby for nursing but because of the maybe after your 16 ill consider joke that was obviously a nod to the fact that her illness was terminal and she wouldn't make it past that age, people laser focus and discredit the incredible story for no reason.

@Lilbill349 so true. Even the reincarnation argument isn't free from laser focusing on only the age and memory aspect of it. Despite the fact that the character in question is also an underage child. 16 is the age of consent in Japan if I'm not mistaken, so it might be weird for some western countries but it is not as weird for Japan or other countries

16 is also the age of consent in a lot of western countries. It's weird BECAUSE it is inherently weird, regardless of what thr age of consent is.

I really dislike the typical american overreaction over the age topic. Literally thats not even what the show meant or what was going for, but american always have to overreact these things because of their prejudice and oversensitivity to these topics. Like Jesus Christ they need to chill the f out with this stuff and stop thinking the worst every time they see something like this. When almost no one else in the world thinks like that only you guys than maybe you should look inwards a little bit.

I definitely understand your concerns about the creepiness in the series but this show makes an effort to show the REAL world of being in the entertainment industry. This creepiness is unfortunately how it actually is and it would be a disservice to itself not to shine a spotlight on it. This series makes a massive point of showing just how screwed up Japan's entertainment industry actually is. Granted im probably a lottle tardy to the party in typing this comment lol

The show is weird. Period. Especially the early parts. But whoever spoiled them saying oh, there's a creepy character at the beginning watch out, etc set them up for expecting something bad. So the weird stuff is even weirder and creepier than it could be. Just let them react normally and let them have genuine reactions and speak their minds. The commenter probably had good intentions, but still. Just let reactors/content creators experience things for themselves and voice out their actual thoughts.

In Japan, people with good looks tend to be seen as \"idol\", even if they are actors or singers. FMA opening singer YUI was one of them.

16 is a girl legal marriage age in Japan. So, they'll be adults by 16, that's why. Guess it's the same in Korea too because I did read a Korean based novel where women celebrated their coming of age ceremony at 16, but only in old times. It might not be the same for them now. But for Japanese, it seems that the case is the same until now.

this story is definitely making it a point to comment on the weirdness of the idol industry where grown men crush on teenage girls, so i find it extra weird that people rush to dr. goro's defense over his suspect attitude towards 16 year olds, i mean the nurse literally calls him a lolicon...
@mollytovxx4181

Could be that such commenters usually only see such topics brought up in comedy anime, which softens the blow and gives the false impression it's more accepted in Japan than it actually is.
@tigerwoods3729
@tigerwoods3729 Жыл бұрын
@@mollytovxx4181 yeah, theres usually a lot of "well its normal in japan" tied up in all this, where people often cite legal ages of consent and such, but the legal age of consent in the european country i live in is 16 too, and that doesnt make it any less weird when somebody in their 30s is crushing on a 16 year old

I think it is okay to have couples with an age difference, as long as they are not forced to marry against their will. I don't target women under 20s myself.

In Japan, women can marry at the age of 16. This is because women were not allowed to enter society and because Japanese men prefer immature women. Japanese men tend to prefer \"friendly\" women rather than \"beautiful\" women. A \"beautiful woman\" with perfect looks is likely to attract strange yakuza-type men in Japan. ...... Japanese \"female idols\" are defined by their age to be around 20 years old. Compared to other countries, many of these girls are immature and unfinished. Even \"actors\" are seen as idols based on their appearance, and in the Japanese entertainment industry, they are forced to work in swimsuits and gravure from underage.
