Yes, your interpretation is the same as I had. Aqua's developtment, as someone who grew with his old self on a newborn body, is slowly being affected by all the hormonal effects that it comes associated with it. Also, he is slowly progressing into becoming this "new person" - *Aqua Hoshino* - that somehow has memories of his past life. His feelings towards Ai are a manifestation of his body's developtment (as he calls "being aware of his surrondings"), which is clearly demonstrated through his questioning: what does he feels towards Ai? A fan affection that he had as the doctor, Gorou Amamiya; a child's affection toward his mom, that he had as a baby; or something else that this emerging new person - Aqua - can't quite explain? Remember, the important factor here, and that makes the story work, is the fact that is because he had the mind of an adult during his childhood that he was able to decide to investigate and go after his mother's killer. That wouldn't work properly if he was just a regular 3-4yo.

I find Aqua's character really interesting! While he sometimes uses questionable methods, like manipulating Kana to join his sister's idol group or Akane to be his "official girlfriend," he still cares about the well-being of others. After all, it's not for nothing that he was a doctor in his previous life! In "Oshi no Ko," Aqua's complex personality is shaped by his past life as Gorou, a dedicated and empathetic doctor. This background gives him a strong sense of responsibility and care for others, even if his methods are often morally ambiguous. His manipulation of Kana and Akane can be seen as strategic moves to achieve his goals, but they also highlight his willingness to protect and support those he cares about, albeit in ways that may not always be ethically sound. Aqua's dual nature makes him a compelling and multifaceted character, balancing his darker actions with a fundamentally caring heart.

Aqua's morals are always a bit strange. He constantly do the right thing but by the "wrong" motives. He manipulates people, but not in a super harming way, usually resulting in a good outcome for the person. I find it very interesting from a character perspective. But I hope that he can learn how to be more sincere with others and open up more in the future

From whats been shown so far in season 1, he does open up more and actually start becoming more wary of others. And he's always there when it matters most for sure.

Like in episode 4, when he was acting.. He said he'd use everything to his advantage. And so while he does use people, he's not morally ambivalent. He's a very complex character and the one who notices it most is Ruby. It's what makes his character a lot of fun to watch. He has a heart for the people whom he sees as good people but him admitting it (besides about Ruby) would not happen lmao. Like when he saved Akane.

People going the extra mile, doctor never saw AI as a love interest: he is loosing the doctor persona who had appreciation towards AI as an idol for being super talented and now he’s admiration for his mom comes as someone who loves his mom and also knows she had a special talent.

Love the Powerpuff Girl reference and it fits pretty properly with Ruby, Kana and Mem-Cho.❤️💚💙

One thing to keep in mind is that Sarina was the one who introduced him to Ai and B Komachi, in the first episode flashback he had no idea who they were and he wasn’t an idol otaku until he met her. After Sarina’s death he fully embraced it living vicariously through the thing Sarina loved most keeping her alive in that way, but also through Ai as they were two girls the same age, but with very different lives. He superimposed Sarina onto Ai and since he still doesn’t know that Ruby is Sarina he’s lost Sarina or at least what he believed to be Sarina twice now. I believe that’s what he means by “a fan…a mother…or?” I don’t think it’s implying romantic feelings towards Ai. I think he genuinely grew to love Sarina and not in a romantic way, but as someone who watched over her every day in that hospital room as a patient. Almost like a big brother (like he is now ironically) or a father figure.

Like you Sam, I prefer Aqua x Kana as well. But Akane is a sweet girl who doesn’t deserve to be lead on. I’m happy Aqua was real with her. I hope she a recurring character, I really like her.

So about the whole "Aqua loves his mom" thing, this episode is a good example of why that's important. You girls has commented before that they could've went with him feeling a different kind of love for her that was less creepy, but if they had done that the story would need to be different. Aqua/Goro's feelings about Ai are extremely important for the development of his relationship with Akane, and for how detached he is from romance in general. And while I won't go more into it now, it's also important for other things later on in the story. So yes, it's weird, but it's there for a reason. Which is why I have no issue with it being a part of the story, as it is used very effectively and written very well. And by the way, the same applies to Goro and Sarina.

Aqua is a villain who just happens to be our protagonist. While its pretty clear he tries not to needlessly hurt people, he's also not above doing so if it means meeting his goals. Even here, he's not really willing to be truthful with Akane until she basically forces it out of him by telling him she already knows hes not actually interested.

I personally love characters like Aqua because they are much more realistic, based on ideas from other typical anime characters where they are always seen doing good deeds, a character that is more in the gray area who is neither 100% good nor 100% bad is refreshing because people are like that, nobody is 100% good all the time and that he is willing to go more to the dark side just to reach his goal just makes me more admire for him even knowing that one hour will come the downfall of fate charging for it which makes me want to know even more. Having said that to me, you demand a lot from him to see Ai as a mother, but if you watch the full 1st ep again, you would realize that he never referred to Ai as a mother, he always used his own name in all the years he lived with her, unlike Ruby even because of the difference in mental age at the time, she already saw her as a mother, it is worth remembering that he was an adult in a child's body, only now has he had time to rethink that and start being himself in which he lives in that body, he doesn't you can judge him with what you expect him to be but by contrasting the conditions he lived in and that doesn't take away the merit of finding it weird or him making that joke with 16 year old girls at the time but I'm not punctuating that, you may find this strange but you can't expect something from him that he's been working constantly to be and hasn't reached the final result yet. From the beginning he already demonstrated that he would do everything to reach his goal which doesn't make him focus so much on other things besides that and also not like if he was going to make Akane try to commit suicide again because of that, he wouldn't take her that way he was already one of the main people responsible for saving her the first time, it would prevent any indication of that happening again in my view being that the first time he saved her even without knowing that she would be useful later imagine now then...

The continuation of aqua does shitty things for a good purpose the show lucky akane called him out on it before she could get hurt not that she still could she is not very emotionally stable right now getting over attempted s*side and all. Also ya aqua/goro isnt like that I can definitely get that interpretation from the first bit of ep 1 with the nurse joking about the weirdness of idol stan culture and the Sarina's back story him just trying to give a dying child hope even if it is a little weird way of doing that and aqua's retrospection about how maturing in a new body and brain effected his memories helped with that hope we get more stuff like that in the future.
