OSHKOSH in AFRICA?! Awesome fly-in event

During our recent trip through South Africa, we were overjoyed to hear that there would be a massive fly-in event taking place at the Middelburg airport. This was right on our route, and we couldn’t miss the opportunity to spend a couple of days surrounded by like minded aviation enthusiasts. We fuelled up the Rocket and flew her across a stunning part of the country, finally arriving at a VERY busy airport. Was this Oshkosh in Africa?! Not only did we meet a lot of awesome pilots, we also joined on a few flips in different aircrafts, and ended each day with cold beers at sunset!!

Your take-off almost brought tears to my eyes. I learned to fly at Lanseria. Before that, I used to go there every other Sunday afternoon when I was in high school to watch aeroplanes take-off, in the 90s/early 2000s. My last take-off and landing there was in 2014 ina a 172. I love that way that you guys love South Africa.

Thanks for sharing your adventures guys. Been living in Australia for 33 years, Zimbabwe before that, where I flew GA and an airline around Southern Africa. So…..I am totally loving seeing your videos with all the Africa flying and adventures. I built and fly an Rv7 ( quite a few fly ins) so was chuffed to see how same same this fly in is compared with Oz. Especially the the RV formation. Good on you! Its all about the people! And the aircraft! Any Zimbabwe flying planned? Vic Falls? Make the most of it!

Hi Pilot Bambi great events Tqvm for ur effort to capture its for us far away… i m a retired controller from Malaysia whom involved a lot with this GA and recreational flying. We did an Oshkosh East in Langkawi home for LIMA.Yes we had major participants from all over the world most South African whom brought their flying machine in boxes n assembled here in Sungai Besi airport ( then … sadly now closed for some other purposes). Then we flew all of them to Langkawi in formation…

I remember when South Africans brought a 4 Engine DC4 to Oshkosh WI to the Airventure Annual Convention. The DC4 Tee shirts they sold were all one size too small. The size L was like a Medium and that was the largest size. It was wonderful that they came. It is a rare to see one and to see it flying was over the top.

Loved that turbo DC-3 or in 1963, in the USAF it was a C-47. Funny nose!! I'd flown in them a few times! Paratroopers liked jumping from them, buy NOT ME!!! Just liked the ride!! Great mountain scenery. Some pretty nice home on the cliff sides too!! OH WOW!!! Tent city!?!? Great camping with all your comrades!! Wonderful show and some classic crafts to visit!! How is it that you get to enjoy this extended trip/vacation in South Africa? What a great time!! Your looking good in that 407!!!

The one word to describe your video is, LEKKER :) Really enjoyed seeing you flying from Lanseria, where I worked for 6 years (41 Squadron and then 4 Squadron). Memories of working in South Africa a few years back, my host took me up in his Cirrus SR22 from Lanseria, we did a similar flight. Fantastic area. I am now a pilot.... I wasn't back then :-) Oh and also saw the strange plane!
