Relatively recently, had learned about the original "Dracula" story, including how it also inspired modern werewolves. Dracula was able to turn into a wolf. So the silver thing applies to both, because modern vampires and werewolves actually share the same literary origin.

Well, it depends. Some vampire stories ignored the sun, thats mostly a recent invention. Sometimes werewolves when killed would rise again as vampires, theres all sorts of madness in the lore because all over the world people invented undead and bloodsuckers and we've just codified them. Similar to how the various gods and spirits of Norse mythology have become generic "Dwarves" and "trolls" and "elves" and "Giants"

There are 2 sources for why werewolves are averse to silver. The first is a retcon to the tale of the beast of Gévaudan, wherein the originally mundane bullets that finally felled the beast were reimagined as having been made by melting down silver amulets of the Virgin Mary. The second is oddly Bram Stoker's Dracula. Dracula, as a vampire, was averse to silver as it was a holy/pure material and vampires were explicitly unholy abominations. This weakness got passed to werewolves because Dracula could not only command wolves, but also was able to assume the form of a particularly large wolf and thus got strongly associated with werewolves as well. So yeah, blame the iconic vampire for why werewolves and vampires often share/swap weaknesses.

And, yes, gold is edible. Mainly because gold is a very unreactive metal. It really doesn't want to alloy with anything. So, basically, it just passes through you, doing nothing. Reacting with nothing. But, actually, that's the root of why it's considered a "precious metal" in the first place. For example, take a look at Tutankhamun's death mask. Do a Google image search on "Tutankhamun". Even though it's thousands of years old, it looks like it could have been forged yesterday. Gold doesn't want to alloy with anything - as it's an unreactive metal - and so it's pretty impervious to the ravages of time. It doesn't rust or decay. Like, say, iron does. Indeed, there actually was a civilisation, back in Persian times, that actually had "iron pieces". They used iron as a precious metal - forging coins and ingots and stuff out of it. The grand problem with this was that... say you were a rich man and you decided to preserve your wealth in precious metals. So you converted your money into iron ingots and stored it away in your vault. Then, years later, you'd come back - to make a deposit - and the iron bars would have rust on them. So you brush off the rust and then weigh them and.... oh, they weigh less. And as precious metals are valued by their weight, that just means you've lost money. Where did the iron go? Well, that rust you brushed off. Rust is iron oxide. Iron, unlike gold, does react. With the oxygen in the air, and it turns to iron oxide - rust. You just brushed some of your money onto the floor to brush off that rust. But if you converted your money into gold bars and stored those in your vaults then - as with Tutankhamun's mask - you could come back thousands of years later, weigh the bars and.... exactly the same weight. They've reacted with nothing in all that time. There's nothing intrinsically special or valuable about gold as an element. I mean, it's a good electrical conductor - and that's why you'll notice the contacts on game cartridges and the contacts on your graphics card have gold on them. And, yes, it's really actually gold. Though, as with "gold leaf", it's nanometers thin - mere atoms - because it's expensive stuff. But it's used where you need to make electrical contact, because it's such a good electrical conductor. This is why - cue the meme - there's more gold in a ton of mobile phones than a ton of gold ore. It's all those electrical contacts. They all have that thin layer of gold on the contacts. Whereas, gold is naturally rather sparse in rocks. An awful lot of gold ore has to be processed to get enough of it. So much so, that, yeah, a ton of mobile phones will have more gold in it than a ton of the gold ore they dig up. And this unfortunately means that there are poor folks in India who're using some quite nasty toxic chemicals to extract gold - and other previous metals - from old mobile phones, to scrape enough together to sell for a pittance. And the stuff that's used really is very nasty chemicals. Not remotely good for their health. But when you're that poor, you have little choices but to roll the dice and hope to somehow survive, I guess.

The reason car airbags are dangerous for children below a certain age is because the exploding airbag is designed to hit an adult's chest and halt their forward momentum, sometimes with enough force to break bones. The height of an adult's chest is about the same height as a child's face. So that explosive force in a child's face can break noses, shatter cheek bones, and sometimes snap necks. So it has more to do with the height of said children than how old they are. A particularly large/tall child is fine.

whenever they talk about what they call bread rolls it reminds me that the Brits have a seemingly very limited selection of bread options. In Denmark we have so many different names for and types of bread that they take up a huge chunk of the dictionary. It's more fun because you can have half a dozen or more different types of bun at any baker, but not only do the names differ between regions, there are also some local differences in how they're made, so even if they're called the same, you may not get exactly the same thing

Silver has natural antibacterial properties. This is why you eat your food with "the silverware". (Although, sure, these days, the "silverware" is usually not actually made of silver, as that'd be too expensive, and it's stainless steel - but note the superstition is still really there, as the metal selected is still silver in colour.) Remember, back in ye olde days, they didn't know about germs and bacteria. But what they observed - and thus deduced - was that folks who ate their food with their dirty hands tended to get sick more often. These days, we know why: Germs. But they didn't understand that, and attributed illness to "evil spirits" possessing people. (There's a lovely Medieval procedure called "trepanning". What they did was bore a hole in someone's skill with a hand drill. The idea was to create a hole through which the "evil spirit" would leave.. and then you exorcised it with Bible passages to scare it out of someone's head. And that was their "cure" for madness. It has a touch of "witch trial" about it, in that they'd often kill the person they were trying to save by the procedure itself - I mean, they are drilling holes in people's skulls here - but, well, better to be dead and with Jesus in Heaven than possessed by a demon, right?) This association of silver with "driving away evil spirits" is therefore the source of the idea that werewolves and vampires and other evil mythical creatures are driven away / wounded by the metal. The proverbial silver bullet. They didn't understand that silver is just naturally anti-bacterial (it's basically toxic to the microorganisms and naturally kills them off), so they saw and understood it in magical terms. Silver was a magical metal, that "drives away evil spirits". And folks would drink their mead from silver tankards, and eat their food with silver knives and forks. And served up their meals on silver platters. Yeah, did you ever notice that before? The heavy use of silver when it comes to handling foods. It's because of this natural anti-bacterial property. But that's our modern understanding of it. What they understood was that you used the "magic metal" to keep the "evil spirits" of illness at bay. And that notion then sneaks its way into folklore and mythology... and werewolves and vampires - evil spirits, as they are - are driven away by its magic. There's a similar idea with salt. Throwing salt over your shoulder. Putting a ring of salt around your home. Salt melting witches. The modern version is that salt absorbs water. If you put, say, a steak in salt - buried the steak in salt - then the salt absorbs the water and dries out the surface of the steak. Germs are living things and they need water. So, before the invention of refrigeration, salt was a very precious resource. It was the primary method for preserving foods. It has the drawback, though, that it will make your steak extremely tough. Hence the invention of the serrated steak knife and the reason why we all hold our knives in our right hands (most people are right-handed, and you put the knife in your dominant hand, as it has the most strength for cutting). I'm a heathen. I actually hold my fork in my right hand. Because my reasoning is that now we have refrigeration, foods are not tough, as they used to be, when they were buried in salt to preserve them. And, actually, I think it makes more sense to put the fork in your dominant hand, for its superior dexterity - like, you know, balancing peas on a fork. But, yeah, if someone serves me a steak, then that's a tougher cookie, so I will swap hands and use the knife in my right hand. It's really interesting to see that some people really do get very upset and annoyed if you hold your cutlery in the "wrong" hands. I like to just tell them the historical story of why we hold our knives and forks in that way in the first place, and why, you know, it really should no longer matter in the modern age of refrigeration and soft foods. But, yeah, silver and salt. "Magical" substances that drive evil spirits away. Or, at least, that's what they thought in ye olde days, before modern science explained it all with the discovery of germs. It's actually just that silver is naturally anti-bacterial - it's toxic to such tiny lifeforms, but "mostly harmless" at our size - and that salt dries things out, and even tiny microorganisms like bacteria depend on water, like bigger life also does. But, back then, all they saw were the results. They just noticed that folks who didn't use their dirty hands - but ate their foods with silver implements and from silver tankards - got ill way, way, way less than those who didn't. So they understood it as "magic" and thus superstitiously kept it as a "tradition" thereafter.

25:09 Where I live in the USA, you need to be at least 13 years old or over 4'9" to sit in the front passenger seat. Though all kids under 8 must be in the back seat, leaving a grey area for all those 8-12 year olds who may be tall enough to sit in the front (4'9" is the average height of a 12 year old girl in the USA)

There is a popular ramen shop in Seattle formerly called "Kukai Ramen" until they found out "Kukai" means "Poop" in native Hawaiian... now it's "Kizuki Ramen."

Lemon juice on pancakes sounds weird, but now I wanna try it. Also almost everything else they put on them sounds weird. I use maple syrup, I’m American btw and over here most people use syrup, or butter. I think some people use honey as well.

Re: the booster seat thing. At least here in Germany kids are not allowed to sit in the front until they are either 12 years old or a certain height. There have been a lot of accidents where chidlren got suffocated by the airbags, hence they are not allowed to sit in front because the one thing that's supposed to save them in a crash might actually kill them.

The object of deal or no deal is to win a lot of money not lose the game and break even, even if you lose you get to be on the show, you're paying for exposure at that point the only thing you can lose is your dignity

A bap is what i call burger buns. Like if i have a sausage bap. If it was in sliced bread then i'd call it a sandwich or more likely a Buttie, cos it's buttered bread. Urgh, this is making me hungry... Reminds me of the cafe in Eastgate Market, they do good sausage baps... One time i even went all the way to Gloucester (glossed-ur) just to have one.

Are british pancakes not a bit sweet? I would still eat it with beef and gravy. But as an American, it seems weird not to put sweet toppings on them. I personally stay simple with butter and maple syrup.

As an American, listening to what they put on their pancakes is so different. Syrup and butter over here for the most part, I can see how gravy would be good. Couldn't tell if they were joking through

Their gravy is different- probably a beef gravy rather than the sausage gravy we'd think for breakfast. Might actually be good.

I'm from the South of England and hearing them talk about those pancakes disturbed me at first, although I have seen Yorkshire pudding wraps for sale before which are similar. I just think a pancake is too thin for gravy and it would soak through, whereas a Yorkshire pud is thick enough to hold it so is the superior savory gravy based wrap material.
@shadowmancy9183
@shadowmancy9183 Жыл бұрын
@@crazypig1007 We might be thinking of different types of pancakes then. The ones I'm used to eating are up to 1/2" thick, which will definitely hold a gravy.
