Oslo to Bergen, Norway by Train through the mountains and Boat through the fjords

I have been fortunate to see, feel and enjoy the magnificent scenery that Norway offers to its visitors. I traveled by train from Oslo to Bergen. I stayed in Bergen a couple of nights, then I took a bus to Odda to hike Trolltunga. I came back to Oslo by bus through another route. Definitely Norway is beautiful!

I've done this fantastic and marvellous trip OSLO to BERGEN back in April 1974 all the way by train after 65 days traveling all around Europe with Rail-Pass. Now I'm back to Sao Paulo - Brazil.

In 2017 in October/November I travelled through Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland with my wife. Most of our travel was by train. We took this trip except that we went all the way to Bergen by train - missing the Flam unfortunately. We then took a trip up the fjord and also to the trip to the top of the mountain behind Bergen. The journey across Norway was spectacular with wonderful scenery, lovely snow covered areas up into the mountains and beautifully green coming down the mountains into Bergen. All the trains were clean, on time, featured free wifi and USB charging points at the seat. I'd recommend this trip to anyone wanting to explore this region of the world. We flew back from Bergen to Oslo which was a lot less interesting but took about 40 mins. Later we took the train from Oslo to Trondheim which was also a great scenic trip. In 1968 I took a train from Oslo to Trondheim... It was an amazing trip and I treasure the memories of it to this day in 2020... Norway is a very beautiful Country and is much like British Columbia where I am from.

Beautiful. I was 20 when I took a train from Oslo to Bergen. I still remember the beautiful scenery. It was just a delight. I also remember the Fana Folklore, a traditional wedding, that we attended. The sun only went down at midnight. Wonderful wonderful experience.

I just did this train ride between Oslo and Bergen a few weeks ago. It was so wonderful I did didn’t want to get off the train, even after almost 7 hours or so. The train was so comfortable and the scenery was nice. I feel like this was my best train ride ever. 👍🏼

I m from India.I have visited this route in August 18.We did our most of journey by bus but we took Flamsbana just to get feel of this popular ride from Flam to Mydrial and back from Mydrial to flam.Its really very beautiful.We experience Fjords cruise also from Gudvengen to Flam.Bus travel enables us to pass world's longest road tunnel Lardal.In short these r most spectacular places and we enjoyed a lot.This video is nice covering most places .

@@norapagayao5937 yes indeed. But you pretty much can short trip or long trip. We stayed in Bergen overnight and back to Oslo the next day. İt is a long trip. From memory you can use the national rail to flam and then catch the ferry.

I took this train and boat route in 2010. It was awesome. I will say the train ride back to Oslo is quite long, so plan to stay on the west coast for at least overnight. I did the round trip in 24 hrs, my friend had to be back to work. While you are out west go to Stavangar it is worth seeing too.

I am a native Swiss man, living in Norway, Hedmark. Simply for the reason because, if you visit as a tourist, you might find Switzerland nice. But if you live there...... ^^ overall Norway is much more free, you have high tax in some areas yes. But overall you can at least affird to get a doctor and salaries are regulated waaaay better. Not to mention Norwegians take their education system pretty much more serious as well they take more care on their children ^^

Ninja RaVen I agree that Norwegian education is great. I encountered many Norwegians who speak English perfectly. When I was in Switzerland, I struggled to get my point across many times. Went to get medical attention in Locarno and two clinics refused to take me in as they didn’t speak English. Affordability, I’ve been to Switzerland three times and Norway two times, both are expensive but I find food is a bit cheaper in Switzerland at supermarkets, restaurants they are both expensive. Switzerland is easy to travel without a car compared to Norway, where public transport is very expensive. Swiss public transport is expensive too but if you plan well ahead, it can be affordable.

We did the reverse of this trip in 2011. Fast ferry in morning from Bergen with beautiful weather to enjoy the Sognefjord. We stayed in Flam (pronounced more like “Flom”) for two nights. Then took the Flambanna train up the mountain to catch the Bergen Oslo (not Ozlo) train. We got off at Honnefoss outside Oslo where my second cousin lives and spent a few days with them. A few days later, we took the overnight ferry from Oslo to Copenhagen.

Thanks for that excellent description of a beautiful journey. That ferry to Copenhagen makes a nice addition. Or you could go to Tallin for the day and then connect to Helsinki.

@@denniscallan A few years earlier, we had taken a round trip ferry from Kiel to Oslo and back over three days and it was great. Staterooms were small, but we expected it. Great food. The ferry from Oslo to Copenhagen wasn’t as nice. Food was cafeteria style. Ship was more of a trucker thing. Not quite like a highway truck stop, but close. A lot of smoking truckers so it smelled a little like an ashtray.

A few questions about your itinerary. 1. The Flam railway leaves at Flam, takes you on a round trip and comes back to Flam? 2. When you boarded your train ride at Oslo, what was the destination? was it not Flam? Why did you change trains at Myrdal? 3. Did you take your boat ride to Bergen at Flam? What is the boat name or the boat company's name? did you buy the boat ticket in advance, before you leave Oslo?

Flam railway takes you from main rail line, connecting at Myrdal, down to the fjord, where you get on the boat to Bergen. Or, you could skip the boat and take Flam back up to resume rail ride to Bergen, or back to Oslo. It is possible to buy any version of complete ticket at the Oslo train station, or in advance, on their website: www.norwaynutshell.com/sognefjord-in-a-nutshell/.
