Great review, i bought mine today. What ive noticed tho, the cushions on the hip belt are a littlebit longer on the M/L one compared to the S/M one. For me it made quite a noticable differnce on my hips, the longer ones where perfectly covering the hipbones which the smaller ones couldn't. The M/L therefore felt way more compfortable even the the other size aspects from the S/M bag would have fitted. So for you smaller ppl out there, you may still want to try the M/L size. Even the salesman in the shop wasn't aware of that difference.

Bought this bag on Friday for my 14YO Boy Scout to take camping as an upgrade from his previous REI Youth Tarn 65. This bag holds a much larger sleeping bag, fits him very well at almost 6 feet tall and seems to hold much more then the same size rating REI bag. It looks great, options are awesome, costs about $160 on sale. I love the Osprey brand and I feel that any of the cheap plastic clips can easily be replaced by the user with a more substantial carabiner. Osprey can make you crazy with so many product choices, this was what was available and at a reasonable price locally. Hopefully this pack takes him to Eagle scout and then to college.

Nice review. I have Kestrel 48 and really like it. I walked 7-8 days with camping gear and capacity was enough for the length of trek. A backpak is confortable and full of feaures. That`s why I bought Kestrel 68. I do not like "U" opening because as you said the zipper might be broken down someday and it is additionally a point to getting the water. I would put instead a side zipper access and a side zipper pocket as Kestrel 48. The prevoius version of Kestrel 68 did not have "U" opening but I believe it is not avaiable anymore on the market.

I took an older version (2011) of this bag with me to Australia and New Zealand for 3 months and it was everything I needed and more! While some of the hanging straps do get annoying at times, you don't notice them when you're walking, and the bag grips you so closely, you hardly know its there.

Hi there, finally getting back to your question, the 58 or the 68 Kestrel. So I ordered a 48 and believe that will be all I need. Too late now but I wish I would have started with the 38 as I am really wanting to go ultra light as possible. Excellent review! Thank you! My first pack was a Kestrel 48. It suited the purpose for an overnighter, but was too small to hold food for a 6 day trip. Now I'm planning a trip requiring a bear cannister and believe it will fit fine in this. However, the only color this comes in is black and I won't buy a black pack, even at this good price, which includes the cover. I will probably go with the Deuter 65 AC Lite.

Black is not very visible to hunters nor rescue that might be searching for you. It hides dirt well but I like to see the dirt so I know how dirty my pack is and when it needs to be cleaned. Lastly, it's one of my least favorite colors.

You are right there and color is a matter of taste... I don't like it since it sucks for images 😉. But the pack comes with a raincover and raincovers in a bright cover are also available. What about an hunting pack from Fjallraven?

I've been doing research on this backpack. The osprey site says the main fabric is made of 210 double diamond ripstop nylon. then the euopean osprey site says its made 0f 210 nylon dobby. so I dont know which material the main fabric is made from. probably gonna have to call osprey directly.

Can I ask, I have the Kestrel 48 and found it just a little too small. I have the Patagonia Nine Trail 36 which is massive, probably almost as big as the 48 as you can extend. I have been undecided between the 58 and 68. I wanted something that could do a 3 season couple of nights or a good week plus trip. Whats your opinion on this. I have ordered the 68 but worries its too big. Does it compress well when not full? any opinions would be appreciated.

I'm just confused why the vertical "AirScape " phrase on the back of my backpack has a different font in compare with your backpack and also this vertical phrase is not exactly at center of back Area! Of course I bought with 25€ discount ( as only available option to buy ) and maybe that negligent on phrase position was a reason to apply that discount.

@@donmean3178 @Don Mean Hi Don. Exos didn't work for me! No rain cover. Can't adjust the Torso. Tried the Exos 48 & 58. After loading them with about 8-12kg (17-25lb), I found the weight would shift my centre of gravity. Felt like I was being pulled backwards which created more fatigue as I walked. Yes it's a light pack but with that fixed suspension, it's massive anyway. I've decided for heavier loads (8-15kg / 17-35lb), a 'slightly' heavier pack is more comfortable. For me, 'Trampoline ventilation' is most useful for smaller packs on hot days, with lighter loads (5-8kg / 11-17lb). However, I did buy the Osprey Stratos 50 as a last ditch attempt at Trampoline ventilation. It's not perfect but I found it doesn't pull me backwards too much & the back system & shoulder straps are much more comfortable than the Exos. Adjustable Torso, hip belt pockets & rain cover. Weighs 1.7kg (3.75lb), about 500 grams (1.1lb) more than the Exos. My view: Exos 48 for lighter loads & hot days (only if the harness fits properly as you can't adjust it). Kestrel 58 or 68 for heavier loads. Rain cover. Durable & rugged. Tons of pockets & organisation If you really want ventilation, you could look at the Stratos series. Yes they're 300-500 grams heavier than the Exos, but I found them more comfortable. They're adjustable, with rain covers & more durable materials. 👍

@@akivanomad2167 Thanks for the reply - very helpful advice! I hadn't considered the effect of the distance of the weight from the back in the comfort. It will likely be more stable over difficult terrain too. As you suggest, I think it is better to have a slightly heavier pack if it lets you carry a greater weight more easily. I think I will go with the kestrel due to the padding on the hip straps, added functionality, pockets and rain cover. Now just need to decide what size 58l or 68l. I think 58 is probably fine for my needs but the 68 doesn't seem much bigger in the stated dimensions. Annoyingly my local shop does not stock the 58l versions of the osprey packs. Glad you found something that works for you! 👍

Thanks for the review I've just brought one and it's on the way but I'm worried that I won't gett all my kit in. My current pack is a 100 litre bergen and weighs 4KG unload and I take on average 24KG to 28KG. But just by having the osprey kestrel that will save 2.2KG in weight and I won't be able to take all the crap I don't need so hopefully I will ve a lot more lightweight 😁👍

I agree about the crappy ring holder! I have exactly the same in my other Osprey backpack. I had many situations when it detached itself. Now I am just using a regular carabiner for the keys instead of that thing.

Petar, Rethink the Deuter. They make fine packs and I reviewed a lot in the past for the magazine I used to work for, but this one... The weight transfer of the carrying system is not that great. I experienced it just trying it at a tradeshow and I checked this with some others and they feel the same in the outdoors. But: like with every pack, try before you buy and go to a shop. Hey Sir, I've come to wholly appreciate your articulate presentation style and cinematographic skills, plus I've just noticed you do E-Bike stuff as well, so Subbed. Just out of interest, are you in Sweden, Norway, or Denmark? I've been assiduously studying up on the Osprey packs - the Atmos, the Kestrel, and the Aether - and as you infer, I am coming to the view that as with the latter two, any disruption to the integrity of the principal construction fabric (i.e. with a J or U zip) will introduce a potential structural weak point which could perhaps be put under strain - or even perhaps potentially burst - if one were to engage in over zealous 'stuffing' and compaction of the main body. Also, I kind of like the extra pockets afforded by the Atmos, which are indeed only made possible by the very ommission of these main access zips. What would you say to that Sir, in your hands-on and clearly experienced practical opinion? (Nice though those zip functions would clearly be in a less earnestly outdoorsy and more urban hostel skipping context). Kind regards. Edit; I should perhaps qualify this for anyone else who is going through this difficult process of remote pack determination/selection; the pockets I allude to are the top webbed 'quarter' pockets - zipped, left and right - which exist between the rear stretch panel and the main load 'trunk' on the Atmos 65 litre version only. These pockets do not exist on the Atmos 50 litre that this kind gentleman reviews on another of his videos. It may well be that the Atmos 65 is essentially an Atmos 50 'base' structure, but with the addition of these two handy and capacious pockets thus upping the overall payload capacity (I so currently surmise). It is the 65 litre Atmos version that I am currently favouring.

I am undecided between the Kestrel 58 or 68 I bought the Aether 65 and it has lots of room but is heavier in weight. I want to try and lighten my load. I have a 3 pound tent, the Xtherm MAX underpad and want to be able to do 4 day backpacks in spring and fall and be able also to bring my Chair zero. Do I go with 58 or 68. When I read about the ultralight thru hikers in the USA, I think I should be able to get everything into a 38 lol, but I want the option of room. My total weight including backpack, I want to keep UNDER 35 pounds and closer to 29-30

I think you should be able to pack in a 58... but 68 just gives moire options. Packing less is possible in the 68, packing more in a 58.... Packs don't need to be filled to the brim. Does this help? @@OutdoorguruGearReviews No worries for the delay :-) My main use would be a mix of overnight hike and photographic trip. I don't plan to stay outside longer than one night so gear would be pretty minimal ( tent,sleeping bag, mat, food and clothes) but my photo gear fullfills a pack very quickly ;-) I really like the big front opening Zip of the kestrel in order to get acces to my gear easily. The aether has only a L zip. Plus I read several times that a non ventilated suspension back system is better when you are carrying heavy loads.... thanks again and happy outdoor!

​@@fontamax73 That is what I was looking for: Kestrel for the big U-zip. It makes the pack in general a bit more vulnerable but it makes getting gear out (and in) a lot less of a hassle. And I like the close contact pack with a heavy load better.... But that is very personal.

What size water reservoir do you use in it?

It is a 2 liters from Osprey with a hard back. I never fill it to more than 1.5 liters just to prevent to take too much weight and pressure on the reservoir. And I mostly bring a second bottle or filter. Hope this helps! Cheers, Gijs.

I’m seriously considering getting one. My only problem is the two straps below, meant I presume to carry a sleeping bag, seem to me very thin. Could you please tell me if a 6.6lbs tent (15” long, 7” wide) fits in the loops? It looks like the loops, even when completely widened, are very narrow. Thanks a lot

Dear Paul, Sorry for my late reply but I am traveling and a lot in places without connection. The shorts are from and they are my trusty companions every where I go. They are strong, sort of fireproof (not that they claim this, just my experience), and dirty they look even better. I need te buy a second one in a different colour though, the red one is very prominent. I have the long trousers too.
