What I've noticed in movies is that it's often the slower moving, gentle killers that are the scariest, especially when you know what they are. It's like you're waiting for "a bit of the old ultraviolence" (to quote 'a clockwork orange') and know it could happen at any moment.

The joker was an unreliable narrator (Spoilers ahead) he's an unreliable narrator because as you go to the end of the movie you find out that all of the stuff that isn't happening such as his relationship with his neighbor it didn't happen and the way we saw we thought they were connecting but that was just in his mind. There are many events that happened that just didn't add up.

@@Xuechi2152021 I think that's what made people like the movie. It was open ended and it made you question if some things were even real. I love the Korean Thriller Genre, it's the closest to western films like No Country for Old Men. They take you on a journey. My mom is not familiar with Korean cinema at all. I watched I Saw the Devil with her and she was on the edge of her seat the entire time, especially the scene with the nurse. Which made me feel so tense that I started getting nauseous. Choi Min-sik is such a masterclass in acting. I put him up there with Javier Bardem's portrayal of Anton. You're almost begging the villain to not kill the person they're talking to.

They mentioned car crashes are common in Korean thrillers. I wonder if it's at least partly due to the fact that striking up a conversation with a stranger is otherwise kind of socially awkward in Korea, so if you want two strangers to talk to each other you have to put them in a situation where they would be forced to do so.

Thats an interesting theory. It is true that its a bit awkward to talk to strangers in Korea in public unless its a bar or a club. But I dont think that has anything to do with the movies. In any movie even in Hollywood talking to a stranger is considered “weird”. Because its a movie and every action serves a purpose to move the narration. People bump into each other or coincidentally meet the same in Korean movies as in other Western movies if the director wants them to encounter each other. It has nothing to do with car crashes in particular. I like the theory tho

I mean, if you're going to react to thrillers, you might as well show them some classic Hitchcock ones.

Should've played the scene in Memories of Murder (2003) where the girl is walking in the field with flashlight singing getting tackled by the serial killer. But moments before that you see the killer poke his head up in the brushes at a distance. It's easy to miss but it's really creepy if you catch it. It's one of the few Korean films I've seen.

Memoirs of a Murder is an amazing Korean thriller. Its a legendary movie here in Korea. Also check out Old Boy and Veteran. Hollywood wise Gone Girl, Psycho, Black Swan, Seven, No Country for Old Men, Nightcrawler, Shutter Island, Fight Club, A Quiet Place, The Sixth Sense are all champions of the genre
