Ostomy wafer not sticking? Here are a few tips.

If you've ever had an ostomy wafer that hasn't been sticking right or peeling prematurely, there are a few things you'll need to check.

As of this time (9/19/22), I've had my stoma since May 31th of this year. After the two weeks of my hospital stay for rectal cancer, I'd had many mishaps. When you are told by several different ostomy nurses on how to install the appliance, it's gets very, very overwhelming. One thing I found out is getting the right wafer fit. I've got a bit of a gut and found out that convex wafers from Hollister are best for that as it has some structure. I found that after applying the powder and Cavilon adhesive (in that order), put the adapt ring on and hold it down. After putting on the bag with its peel-off removed, take the remaining tapes on each side off. Make sure to smooth out the bottom of the seal under the stoma first then smooth the seal as you move up. I found that leaks rarely happen from the top, Hold on to it for 4-5 minutes. Then put on the barrier strip underneath ( you will realize these little strips make all the difference in the world). In regards to bag removal, every 3-4 days is perfect for me. It seems anymore time than that, the adhesive starts pulling, gets itchy and can irritate the skin. I hope anything I stated can help someone. Hello. I've had my ostomy a month and a half longer than yours is all and I found your comment very helpful: thank you! - The part about smoothing it from the bottom up seems quite useful. Yeah, doesn't leak from the top much. Though mine has pulled off from the top. The four minutes is also inspiring: instructions say 30 seconds & my lousy rehab nurses said I didn't have to press it on at all - but the stoma nurse I finally saw said press for at least Two minutes. Which seems forever, but also seems necessary, and I've even been giving it four or six bc I get bored & distracted so I do it some more to make sure. So now I'll just put the four minutes in, it's worth it to assure it stays put! I smiled at the end when you said "adventure", that's a positive spin! It's true, too. Thanks for writing all that. Terrific advice! For a years I had leakage problems. I finally went to a Stoma Nurse, and thought he was nuts when he said to just clean around my stoma with warm water. No soap? OMG it is amazing. I went from struggling to get my pouch to last a whole day, to 3, then 4, now 5 days. I am on day 5 now, and I think I'm going to see if it will go one more. I'm a little nervous, but I feel so much more secure nowadays. KZbin videos have been very helpful, but you folks out there need to know, get with a Stoma Nurse. There is nothing like that face-to-face help, where they can actually see your stoma. At the one hospital I went to, they had a Wound Care Clinic, and that is where the Stoma Nurse was, the one that helped me so much. Since I moved, my new hospital has the Stoma Nurse attached to the Digestive Health Unit, the same office where my GastroEnterologist is located. She has also been so much help. I don't know why I went so long without.

Yes, always talk to a stoma nurse if you can. Unfortunately, I've come to realize that many people don't have access to one (both in North America and overseas), so any information they can get is better than nothing.

As a new ostomate, I used the swabs, the powder, tried the paste. For the first 6 weeks I was in constant tears and didn’t leave the house often, bc of the fear of leaks. Then, my ostomy nurse suggested a simple prep: regular soap and water, allow the skin to dry well, before placing the wafer. I also changed to a convex wafer and wearing a belt. What a difference it made. I rarely have a leak since, no nasty surprises! Thank you for another great video!

I have recently tried Brava protective sheets. Wow! Really helps with leakage. It’s basically a hydrocolloid dressing, comes in different sizes. You can use part of it, or the whole sheet; I used whole 4 x 4 sheet- you cut a hole in it for your stoma, dont cut too large. It’s basically a larger barrier around the stoma, then you apply the wafer directly on top. I also put a eakin barrier ring to my wafer , then put directly on the sheet. It worked great.

I love the protective sheets, but here in Canada (where I have to pay out of pocket for supplies), they are pretty expensive, so I only consider using them as a "last resort" option. I'm glad they work well for you! 👌

I am re-watching this because I'm having problems again and when your Wafers don't stick properly it can be very expensive because there are approximately $10 a pop in Toronto area so I definitely find I have to be more careful ensuring everything is clean and dry and just taking more time has been helping a lot😮 thank you so much for all your advice❤❤❤❤

Yeah, the cost of supplies in Canada seems to go up a few dollars every few months. 2pc appliances are much more expensive now than they were a few years ago. I had to switch to 1pc just to keep costs down.

@@VeganOstomy and approximately 13 years I used Hollister and I never had problems till last year and their customer service was non-existent I even got as far as the customer service manager and she was not responsive at all and do you have Amazon or is that a silly question LOL but I have found a very good barrier ring that is pretty good and probably a third cheaper and also the flange extenders I found a very good one for half the price but now they're coming from the states I don't know why so you have to order weeks in advance if you are interested in knowing the names I can definitely tell you

I remember wasting two Eakin rings one day and decided that I needed to "dry" my stoma before applying it - you do have to act quickly as your stoma will become moist very quickly.+kateellenberry

Terrific info! Also, if you want to wash around your stoma, you can use just plain old warm water. You don't need soap, but if you want to use some anyway, then use a pure soap that doesn't have any lotion or fragrence in it. Additionally, don't use baby wipes as they do have lotion in them.

I feel a strong need for soap to clean things because it's feces and all that! Even tho the nurse said as you guys have. But my skin gets irritated and I need to get the germs off? I do rinse everything very well and mostly it seems warm water cleans most of it, but I can't cope with using no soap to clean the area. I know soap is just a surfactant but it works. I tend to leave the pouch on too long, perhaps. Also it's hard to get the opening the perfect size as I have both a hernia And a prolapse! Anyhow the pouches stick pretty well. The ones with a "tape collar" seem to help with the hermit hernia bulge and I've also tried Coloplast.

I use rubbing alcohol (50-75% depending on what I have on hand) to clean the skin before applying my wafer. Helps to disinfect and gets the skin dry for the wafer. Been doing it for probably two years now. 👍

Perhaps covered in another video but I find (at least for those with love handles) that slightly/gently stretching the skin around the stoma while attaching the wafer/appliance helps. The result is a very slight "puckering" where the wafer and skin meet. Flexibility and resilience is added, making the connection more resistant to skin movement (stretching, twisting, etc.) and therefore less likely to separate/peel along the wafer edges, e.g. When a (pants) belt covers part of the wafer. A visual analogy: how rubber bands react when stretched and released. What works for me is to pull the skin upwards from just ABOVE the stoma so the skin BELOW the stoma gets slightly stretched. Then attach the BOTTOM edge of the wafer, followed by the inside edge, then the outside edge, finishing at the top edge. This order minimizes the creasing of the wafer that will occur when your stoma is located where your skin is not flat. It also lets you control the location of any creasing that does occur.

@@umpintrains7308 Yeah, the marshmallow trick is one that a lot of people suggest. I don't use it personally because a) vegan marshmallows are not easy to find b) my output is pretty tame when I change my appliance. =)

Excellent video sir. Thank you. Ihave had my stoma for 5O+ years in UK and it is very easy to get into bad habits and become a bit complacent with all the preparation and application and it is easy to blame the equipment when it could be simply the soap used for cleaning.

You are absolutely correct about the avoidance of specific soaps and body washes etc. I learned early on to avoid using any soap that is "perfumed." I have found that Ivory is the best. Also, even after thorough washing and rinsing, there is always a small amount of adhesive left on the skin around the stoma. To remedy this, I use something called "unisilove." I carefully wipe the area around the stoma and then wipe it off, avoiding any residual unisolve being left (this will interfere with the adherence of the wafer). Then I wipe the area with "skin prep." Before I apply the wafer I heat the seal that makes contact with the skin using a hair dryer (set on low for 30+ seconds).

I've been using Hollister products so far. The support strap makes SUCH a big difference in feeling secure, especially while I'm sleeping. I don't even know it's on, and I do NOT like anything on me while I'm sleeping. I'm going to try the paste next because I'm getting irritation under the wafer. The tip you gave on building up layers with the powder and barrier film worked pretty good but I want to give the paste a try. Thanks Eric!

My stoma nurse tells me to keep my hands/fingers on the wafer for 5 minutes after applying it. I usually have 1-3 days of wear, but not found a good reliable method for longer wear. So far after two experiments with more careful application (good cleaned w/ water, well dried, pushed 5 mins) I did get longer wear. I suspect the heat of your hands does some good work on making it stick well.

coloplast has extra elastic barrier strips they help me they are 30 of them in the box edge park medical charges 44.00 ins involved . I have a prolapsed vent about 8in long & 1.5 in dia. some times larger. it hurts all the time.I see stoma nurse every 2wks.just hang in there call manufactures and they will send some samples. just waiting on my take down surgery . im using a paste around the wafer and having awful issues with pllacing it, making it stick, and stay put. I also tend to use tight jeans and garmets to keep my bag against my body and it produces more often leaks... Im new at all this and is not easy, I do have nurses that help me but is when i do it alone

Hi Sofia, I'm sorry that you're having leaks. Did your stoma nurse suggest the stoma paste? Usually, you'd use paste if you have a dip in the skin, but it's not useful in other situations and may even contribute to leaks. For leaks, a barrier ring is more useful, but that again depends on a few factors. As this video explains, there could be many reasons why a wafer won't stick - it may require some experimentation and detective work on your part, but finding why it's not sticking (or finding a way to get it to stick better) is likely going to solve the problem with leaks too. If you just put a flat wafer on what happens? Is your stoma flush with your skin or does it protrude? Have you tried different brands of wafers to see if one sticks better than another? And when applying it, do you make sure that you warm the wafer (this can be with your hand) and apply gentle pressure on it afterward? There are several things to consider, but I think that once you solve one problem, it will lead to other problems being solved at the same time.

Vegan Ostomy yeah they did suggest it, I don’t have a dip, they said it would keep the ring holding longer, I’m using 2 piece hollister, I tried without the paste and had a leak also, so is about the same I think it depends more if I wear really tight jeans around that area 🤔

Does your stoma stick out much or is it flush with the skin? Tighter jeans can cause added pressure to the wafer, which may cause it to lift the wafer off of your skin, so try to temporarily modify how your wear your jeans (or where the bag sits around your belt line) and see if that helps at all.

Vegan Ostomy my stoma sticks a bit but not too much, is “normal” but the problem with tight clothes (been watching all your vids and reading blog) is that causes me to pancake, I wear underwear with like a tight area up, for like post operation or “belly hiding” I don’t have a belly I’m very skinny but it helps keep all in place, but what comes out has trouble going down, so I have to manually help, and when I’m eating if I’m not careful it causes a leak. This happened twice in the last week. But trying different thing I’m sure I’ll figure it out. And about the paste, nurses say is to help the water stick and protect the skin. I put it like a ring around the stoma opening I cut on the water. Less is more like you said I think, I was putting too much today I tried less. Sorry for the long story, your videos and blog are so helpful thank you 🙏

Hi Eric.....it’s Teddy. On the subject of Ostomy Wafers not sticking...may I please add and share here that for the past month I have been trialling the TRIO ELISSE Barrier Spray. I can report it is absolutely SUPERB! Maggie ((LetsTalkIBD) was raving about this spray on her review on KZbin of the Trio Elisse). I thought I’d add my comment to your video subject, as this spray makes my Salts Secuplast Stoma Seal stick down right around my stoma! I think it would work on other makes of Seal also. Seals are okay.....but I find that they can “lift” when you bend, allowing effluent to just sneak out under them, right next to the Stoma, especially if you have a liquidy output. My seal sticking down after using this spray is amazing for me. You may recall I was having great problems with anything sticking to my slightly wet, excoriated skin just around the stoma. I started using this Elisse with much scepticism. I sprayed it on and was amazed that it dried in SECONDS. I tapped my skin with my finger tip and it did not feel sticky, so you can imagine how amazed I was to find my seal and bag sticking on beautifully. Trio also claimed the Elisse stops itchiness and skin soreness around the stoma. Absolutely true!! Eric....I’ve had my Stoma for 48 years now. I’ve tried every Barrier product out there (yes, all the latest ones too)....but I have not come across ANYTHING like this Trio Elisse. It’s helped tremendously with my sore skin (after having to resort to Silver Nitrate application several times to shift the granulation skin.....such a painful process.. Trio also do the Elisse in Wipes, as well as the spray. I spray TWO nice layers right upto my Stoma edge. I feel just SO comfortable, with no itchiness or soreness on my peristomal skin. The spray IS better, as you can get a couple of good layers on, leaving just 30 seconds between each layer. Each spray on dries in about 10 seconds, I’d say. AND...best result of all....MY SKIN IS HEALING beautifully. Anyway....I thought you’d like to know my findings on the Trio Elisse. Fellow Ostomists....DO try this spray. If it helps just one of you, as it has helped me - it will have been well worth my time spent in typing this out. Just get some!!,

My father has done his surgery about 3 weeks ago. It is lasting between 12 hours to 2 days max, not the 4 days he was expecting. His belly was swollen and now he has lost a lot of weight so we are placing the pouch while he is standing up to see if this will help!

The beginning will be the most difficult, as the body goes through a lot of changes. You mentioned rapid weight loss, that can contribute to poor appliance wear time because the skin and stoma change under the wafer, so leaks are formed. Things will normalize with time (give it a few more months), so it's best not to push the wear time early on, just so he can keep his skin healthy. Once his weight normalizes, and his stoma is no longer swollen from the surgery, things should get better. Work with a stoma nurse, if you have access to one. Best of luck to your dad!

I've been using rubbing alcohol for the 8 years since surgery but of course if my skin is irritated I don't. If alcohol is not a good idea, what should I use to clean the skin?

Plain old water 😀 It's not necessary to do anything more than that. If you have any adhesive residue left on your skin then you may use an adhesive remover wipe (made for ostomy patients) and then rinse with water. Some people use soap, but sometimes soap can add moisture or dry the skin and that might compound the problem.

Use a Sure Seal over your ostomy wafer. I’ve been using them since 2017 and I have never had a wafer come off of my torso. I live in Florida and use my pool and hot tub and it never comes off.

Sure Seal is a great way to prevent the wafer from peeling along the edges, for sure! But some people have poor adhesion under the wafer, where the Sure Seal won't be able to help, unfortunately.

@@VeganOstomy I’ve had good luck with Eakin Cohesive Barrier Seals that act as a barrier between the wafer and the skin around your stoma. I found it to work better than the stoma paste I was using soon after my ostomy surgery in 2017. And yes, everyone’s situation is different.

Pancaking is a frustrating problem to have, and it will sometimes come and go with dietary changes. Continue to try different things to see if you can make it more tolerable. Even making slight changes to your diet can make a big difference. Good luck!

They should just make 1 product that strips all of the old crap off of the skin to prepare for the new wafer. I like to use paper towels and a hair dryer for the final step before I apply the wafer. Also, I am wondering if some heat from the hair dryer will help the wafer set quicker that just using the heat from your hand. I like to run my finger around the wafer perimeter while applying heat from a moving hair dryer so that I am going around the perimeter of the wafer about once every 2 to 3 seconds. It is hard to tell what works better since things are changing with an ostomy, but I suspect a little heat helps it set to the skin and also helps the skin to dry (just like if you were in the bathroom and want to dry your hands quickly, you can use heated air).

Soap and water is likely best. I use plain water without issue. Heat and compression is a requirement for good adhesion, but a hairdryer may be too hot. I rub my wafer between my hands before applying it and that works well. I've also left it on my forced air heater vent while prepping and that makes it nice and warm.

Another interesting question is if applying a new wafer to someone else, what is the best position for them to be in when it is applied? If they are lying on a bed flat on their back and it is applied, then they sit up, they are in the different position.

Standing is the best position to apply a wafer. If you are sitting or laying down, your skin will stretch when you stand, and that can cause your skin to tear or become irritated under the wafer.

Standing is not a great position for an old person that cannot stand for more than maybe a minute or two. I have applied wafers to my elderly mom while she was lying flat on her back on a bed, and have gotten 1 week of use out of them without leaks (best case). Also if she sat up or stood during wafer installation, it would make the output drip down her more aggressively and be harder to clean up. She has a high output stoma and I have actually seen it spew out like a water fountain while I was trying to install a wafer. Also one time I went thru an entire roll of paper towels trying to get her dry. Many times when I tried to install the wafer, her stoma turned into old faithful.

Yes, I suppose if they are not standing too often during the day, then it wouldn't be necessary to apply it while standing. I assumed this person was active throughout the day. If you're getting 1 week with that method, you should be proud! That's a great outcome!

Dont let any trickle of urine go across the skin protector, after it has been wiped on. Some protective lotions are very sensitive to any wetness.. After shower I have a highly absorbent pad over the stoma. Then I apply Welland skin wipe. Must have Welland remover to get it off Some others wont work. This is for urostomy. The one with bowel waste is colostomy

thank you for your vids, I watch a lot of them! My wafer slips off when I sweat, I use coloplast 2 piece sensurmio, adapt barrier rings and cardinal stoma powder with ostemy belt. Brava adesive spray adhesive remover great too. I hate barrier strips Brava strips, they work great but awful to remove. All works great until I work out. Maybe it is the soap I use with coconut oil in it? Any other suggestions?

Hello, Mine has been fine all year up to just recent. Suspect it may be the season change. some scabbing in area of outer adhesive and moisture coming from the skin causing some of the outer adhesive near the top to be coming up a little. Always used warm wet rag to clean and dry rag to dry. Use the powder as was shown (put on more red areas) and brush away with dry rag and pick up residue with that skin prep stuff. Hopefully its just the season change for a bit like chapped lips or colds and flus.... Besides that has not fortunately given any grief. Got it done about the same time last year.

There is no set time to change it and it would depend on how your skin looks. I can go 3-4 days with most wafers, but some that I've tried need to be replaced sooner because they break down and irritate my skin. One week is really good! Congratulations =)

I found to that I have to make sure all of stoma powder product is off my fingers before molding my barrier ring. I don't use adhesive remover on my abdomen any more due to irritation but I do use it on my hands

Sweat can be a problem for some, and I wish I knew what differs from one person to another to make it worse for some people. For example, some people have oily sweat, and others have very salty sweat. I would imagine that either would negatively impact the wafer. Finding out the source of that (i.e diet, hormones, medication, etc.) could go a long way to finding a solution. I've been lucky, and can ride my bike for 10 hours straight in high temperature, but my wafer seems to stick *better* in that context! My sweat is not salty, nor is my sweat oily, so I think that plays a big part.

Hi Janet, Brava is the name of a wide product line by Coloplast, so there could be a few items that sound like what you're looking for. There are the "Brava Elastic Barrier Strips", which are meant to go along the outer edge of your wafer. There are also "Brava Protective sheets", which are stuck to your skin before applying the wafer. Both have specific uses, but it may be worth looking into what's causing your wafer to come off so quickly before trying new products. I just started with a stoma a week or so ago. As long as I sit still in a chair, it's OK. But my problem occurs if I bend or twist. I have a slight gut, and when I bend the barrier ring binds, and part of it comes loose. And of course, once liquid from inside escapes through the loose part, the adhesive is shot. I need to research to see if there is any heavy duty adhesive barrier rings, or if there's a glue or something I could put into the gap once it is dry. Have you heard of this before? Thanks. :)

Hi Greg, there are a lot of variables at play, so I don't think there's a single solution to this. My first suggestion would be to work with a stoma nurse who can evaluate and assess the appliance and your technique when putting it on. You might also benefit from sampling different products and brands. Some will be more flexible and easier to bend with. Try an "extended wear" wafer, which will have a more aggressive adhesive on them - use pressure and heat when you first out it on your skin to give it the best chance of adhering. Use caution, though, as more aggressive adhesives can also cause skin damage I'd they are forcefully pulled (like with movement). New stomas are a challenge and there is a learning curve before you get everything right, so don't feel discouraged. 👍

Yes, mucus from your butt is considered quite normal. Some people will have the feeling of needing to pass a bowel movement, even if their plumbing has been removed! Keep an eye on the cramps, though. If it happens alongside other symptoms, you may want to have that looked at. Sometimes, it can be a sign of a partial blockage.

Some of the most important things to keep in mind is that your skin must be dry (I use rubbing alcohol to clean the skin) then to make sure the wafer is warm when applying it. You also need to use gentle pressure to hold the wafer in place when you put it on for the first minute or so. If that doesn't help then you'll need to look at other reasons why the appliance is failing. Using an extended wear wafer can help. Best of luck! 👍

I care for my mothers ileostomy. Been doing it 4 years. Her appliance would last 7 days, no problems. This last month it has been lasting 2-3 days and today not even 24hrs. I don`t understand what is going on. Same products, same procedure. Her skin does feel less sticky then before. The area underneath the wafer seems to be smoother and less sticky(as if polished) then the rest of the skin. I use alcohol wipes to clean the adhisive, would assume this would also clean any oils. Any ideas?

Hey there. Sudden changes are frustrating to tackle for sure. Have these problems coincided with the change in season? Is it hotter, colder, more or less humid than it was a few months ago? Were there ANY changes to soaps, shampoo, lotion, etc.? Which specific appliance is she using? Some brands change their formulations with/without letting people know, and I've seen reports from users for certain products that uncover silent changes that have been made. You kind of have to look at all variables, but I'd start with any new changes first. Good luck!

Hi Guna, I don't know which brands are available in India, but you should have access to Coloplast products, and they have a full line of products for pediatric use. Please keep in mind that paste and rings can create even more challenges, so those would not be my first choice for an ostomate of that age. I would strongly suggest speaking with a stoma nurse or even a Coloplast rep (or whoever you would order supplies from) to see what other options are available for your son.

My urostomy bags leak faster every day, i have no bags left, no supplies have arrived. I ordered some from amazon but it will be 7 days to arrive in northern maine. Sitting here soaking wet, miserable. My visiting nurse no longer comes and i dont know where supplies come from or how to get them. I pulled the bag off and applied an exyender ring , it has reestablished the seal for now, gonna be a long memorial day weekend here.

That's not what I meant at all and I'm sorry if that's how it came out. When I first had my ostomy I developed some skin issues, and I was frustrated that I couldn't figure it out on my own. My problem is that my skin is super sensitive to the adhesives, so I must use something (powder and barrier wipes) to make a VERY thin layer between the skin and the adhesive. The Cera Hollister barriers work best for me. But the edges start to peel as the wear goes on. Any recommendations on good sticky medical tape? Most won't stay.

One of the better types of tape is Hytape. It's pink but has zinc infused in the adhesive, so it should be better for sensitive skin. You can also try traditional wafer extenders, but expect to change them every few days or so.

@@VeganOstomy No its an ileostomy. Once I found out how to use the stoma barrier seals (Eakin Slims) in my case, that was a great day. Being able to seal around the stoma was my key to extended wear. I coat it with a layer of the Karaya powder on the skin side. Lightly powder all where the appliance will be. Blow off the excess powder. Then the Hollister barrier wipes and the Brava spray, making sure it's dry. The 2pc Hollister Cera worked best for me. I do use the belt which helps prevent it loosening when the pouch fills up. The pouch only attached with the adhesive never lasted long enough for me.

You can put the barrier ring on your skin first, or apply it to the bottom of your wafer (once the plastic liner is removed). Try both ways and see which is easier for you - I prefer putting it on the wafer first. Then you can put the bag on after that.

#1 tip is to warm upyour bag. For ladies; tuck the bag into your bra under your armpit. If no bra, just tuck it under your armpit while you remove old bag and prepare for new one. You'll learn really quickly nit to raise your arm. Lol Another option: if you have a 'gut' that 'rests on your leg' when you're sitting, tuck the bag under that gut opposite side from stoma to warm it. The ring will be soft and pliable

+rkgsd Sounds like you're describing "the crusting technique". That's usually how you'd do it as you never want powder on the skin alone. But you'd really only use powder if there's weeping from the skin. Skin prep on its own doesn't require powder. They mostly all work the same.

Best practice is while standing. The reason is that if you lay down or sit then the skin you will be applying the wafer to will be loose and so when you go about your day (I.e. standing, walking, etc) then it will stretch and you may damage the skin. I find that applying it while not standing also increases the chance of the wafers edges peeling sooner than normal.

Hey Ann. What's the exact product you're using? Some barrier products aren't compatible with some wafers (like extended wear wafers) , so that could be an issue, but if what you are using is a cream and not a wipe or spray, try switching to wipes and see if that helps (they dry quickly).

Hello. I have a convex wafer, the issue I have is the wafer comes apart. I’ve talked to Hollister and they claim they’ve never seen or heard of it before. Unfortunately, they have not been able to help. Have you come across this?

Can you expand on what you mean by "comes apart"? Do you mean the material is separating from the adhesive? Is the problem happening as you wear it or before?

Vegan Ostomy I’m using a convex. The plastic ring that attaches to the bag, where it’s glued to the part that attaches to my skin comes unglued. It sometimes lets out output but always lets out odor. I’ve actually had to change it in 12 hours. I’ve spoken to my nurse and Hollister but they all say they’ve never come across this problem before. Hollister is still working with me but it’s very frustrating. I can’t be in a meeting when it comes unglued and odor fills the room. If I knew how to attach pictures I’d send you some

@@liamboyle9875 Wow. I've never heard of the flange actually coming undone. I wonder if it's a bad batch - does this happen if you use wafers from another box (with a different lot # on the box)? Do you know if these were stored in extreme heat? I would guess that's one way the adhesive might be compromised.

Vegan Ostomy I have the same problem with every wafer I’ve used. I’ve gotten boxes from the hospital, the pharmacy, a brick and mortar store near me and multiple boxes from Hollister. I was hoping someone out there would have seen this before. Seems to be a common theme with me. If I’ve had a dollar for every doctor and nurse that said “hmmm. Never saw that before” I’d be a wealthy man.

@@liamboyle9875 I have the same problem occasionally, splits apart...mainly where I pull to "Vent", but seems to be defective wafers. I use the same ones.

What does anyone do for the blue deodorizer that leaks out onto your underwear? I am new to this.

Hi Toni, I'm sorry to hear about the leaks. Where is the deodorizer leaking from? The outlet of the bag or the wafer part that goes on your skin?

@@VeganOstomy It leaks out of the opening in the bottom of the bag where you empty it out. I have done everything I can think of right down to using bulldog clips to close the sides up..I was hoping you might suggest a clip or something..and thank you so much for helping me in the first place. I think you young people are so darn brave to help us through this.

Ok, a fee things to double check. When you empty your bag, make sure that the last several inches of the outlet is clean on the inside. I do this by rolling up paper towel an using that to clean inside. Also, make sure that you're rolling the end of the bag properly or it will not hold in liquid properly. Good luck!

This will be a challenge, and I do suggest working with a stoma nurse who can properly assess the situation. Sometimes, it may be a matter of using stoma paste to fill in that channel, or even to use a convex appliance. Either way, you'll want to properly address it to avoid future or long term issues. Right after my ileostomy a month ago I had staples in the incision close to the stoma. The nurse just cut a bit of the appliance off.

I used to also cut a bit of the wafer off after my surgery, but you have to be careful as it reduces the amount of surface area the adhesive has, which can result in a leak.

Post op 2 weeks, my 8th ileostomy (have only 5% of my GI tract left). My wafer refuses to stay on, and constantly leaks. In the last 48 hours, I’ve had to change everything 9 times! AGHHHHHHHH!!!!!! It’s driving me insane, and hurts like hell to the point I want to rip my stoma off!! Every time I try changing it it’s constantly pouring brown water, making changing my appliance damn near impossible. I cannot slow down the output, and I’ve tried every single trick in the book (I’ve got a LOT of experience, having had 8 different stomas, a J pouch and 2 k pouches), I’m at a loss and m SO angry!!!! I’ve had Crohn’s since I was 20 (I turn 50 Saturday), and in total have had 37 brutal surgeries....did I mention the three relapses of intestinal cancer?.....I’m going back to the hospital tomorrow, I can’t take it anymore, it’s bloody torture. I can’t eat, can’t sleep, and am loosing my mind. This new stoma has two small divots which pull the peri-stomal skin down just enough to constantly allow leakage, I’ve tried paste, rings, glue, you name it, but nothing stops the constant leakage, and my bags fills so quickly with water (nothing can thicken my output by this point) which will burst if I sleep more then 2 hours....my situation is exceptionally rare, 1% of 1% get this, lucky me, NOT! Is there anyone out there that can suggest something? Bear in mind, I’m literally an expert regarding intestinal diversions and treatments, but it never hurts to ask, because no one knows everything, please help if you can before I totally loose it, thanks!😫😫😫😫😫😫😫😫😫😫😫😫

I feel your frustration, TJ. I can't imagine how difficult that must be to manage. My first suggestion would be to work with a stoma nurse (it has to be a stoma nurse, not a regular nurse) - if they can't help, find another. There's no way you can sort this out alone, and you need the best of the best to help. Also, because you have short bowel syndrom, I would try to connect with other patients who also have it (for more reasons than just surgery) - they may have some creative suggestions or advice that can help.

I've had these same feelings, I still do when it comes to people telling me to hide my pouch when I'm already trying, but slowly but surely things will get better day by day, for 4½ years now I always try to remind myself amidst my frustrations that my life would have continued to be miserable without my ostomy, countless enemas, surgeries and medications that didn't even help my situation, but now I've finally seen the light, and you will too.🙂

TJ is in Toronto. I just read your post of 4 rs. ago. I have a niece who has a situation similar to your’s. She has 10% of her small intestine. Her out-put is similar to a Waterhouse. We are having lots of problems maintaining a seal. Are you on TPN?

And I highly do not recommend aloe in the wet wipes that people clean up with. And even the hospital nurses and home care people were using that and they couldn't keep a bag on for 48 hours after using that foolish stuff.

Hey have you tried the Coloplast Filtrodors? You should do a review on them! haven't found any reviews on them but I just got some as a sample and haven't tried them yet.

I'm going to try them on my non filtered Hollister pouches as soon as I change my Natural Sur-Fit durahesive flange/pouch (also another product I haven't seen you review) ideas ideas! 😝

+Josh J My only concern with the Filtodors is the possibility of leaks or even the product coming off. If you try them before I do, let me know what you think! I plan to review some ConvaTec products this year - just need to coordinate it somehow - they don't send me enough samples to test for more than a week, so it'll be something I need to purchase myself ($100+ dollars).

+Vegan Ostomy Ill definitely let you know what I think! I hopw they don't leak though lol. Yeah I understand, they usually only send 3 bags/flanges. I'm not sure how it is in Canada but I know here in the U.S. I can contact different suppliers and obtain samples of the same product. If that makes sense. So if you contact two or three different suppliers that carry Convatec supplies you should be able to get multiple samples since they aren't coming directly from Convatec. :)

+Josh J Yeah, I don't any samples from suppliers, although a few will sell single pieces rather than an entire box of something (like protective sheets). The last few times I got samples from ConvaTec, they sent me defective products and I was only able to use one of their wafers -_- Not impressed, but I'll just buy a box and try them out since it gives me more time to do a proper review.

Does your stoma nurse also have an ostomy, mine does not so every time I see her *(which is very rarely),* I question her knowledge about ostomies in the first place because what does she really know if she does not have one?😐

I think very few would, but they work with hundreds (thousands?) of patience and specialize in stoma care, so they do know what they are doing. I agree that having the first-hand experience would help them to provide better assistance, but stoma care is so personalized that even their experience may not always translate over to another patient.
