Very interesting video. I never realized that the reason why japanese music is good for mapping has to do with the language itself and how it's often sung. But it makes a lot of sense.

I just have mostly Japanese songs because I’m a huge weeb but even before I started watching anime, I still listened to daoko’s music because the Japanese language as a whole just sounds really nice.

Another reason Touhou music in specific is popular in rhythm games: in the actual games, the stages will usually be "synced" to the audio cues within the BGM- so the music is composed with the intention of having an interesting playing rhythm to it, and intensity that goes up and down with the stage. (making it slightly different from most video game BGMs) Subtle most of the time, but it begs mentioning. Even Toby Fox made fun of it in his "improvising fake touhou music" video- mentioning, "oh and this is the part of the stage where we get to the midboss" accompanied by a shift in the music.

also Japanese artists barely use similar loops. its ALWAYS different or a different variance. They also have more instruments and sounds that are in the high frequency spectrum. it all gives a lot more rhythm and mapping options

1:25 In case you're wondering, this map is actually literally bill wurtz's "the high class stuff", mapped by Bonsai, and on his page it says he wanted to map songs considered irrelevant, like this old timey song he was proud of, or, for example, "the high class stuff". Oh, also breakcore is pretty lit as well, pishi made a video on that teminite, not *termite* xD

That last part got me xD Well, I get that instrumental songs are good to map as long as they are not too repetitive. Now what about metal songs and various sub genres of them? There is UNDEAD CORPORATION or Imperial Circus Dead Decadence. Honestly the hardest part here is to find a good song that is not mapped yet.

Re: anime themes (I presume includes, but is not limited to, anime opening or ending songs) found at 6:56. The reason that those songs commonly have higher BPMs, in addition to the reason/s you have mentioned, is because those could work as (somewhat) the centerpiece of that anime. What are the aspects of an anime do people most usually use to hand-pick an anime out of the bunch? In no particular order, • characters • story/plot • which studio animated it • memes/gifs/screencaps • if it's part of a well-known series • it's OP and/or ED There are many more reasons out there (such as the author of the source material -looking at you, Eromanga-sensei-) but these are the ones off the top of my head. The thing here is that, people could use the OP/ED to differentiate an anime from another, and as such, should be engaging and is something that catches the attention of whoever's listening to it. Unlike game BGMs that aren't engaging as much, most notably for the reason/s you have mentioned earlier in the video. (found in 4:43) -- This is some good insight. I legit thought that this video was just some shitpost poking fun at the music genres in osu! (mainly due to the title). I guess I shouldn't judge a book by it's cover.

What I don't get is why the same anime songs get ranked over and over again in different version, yet when I type Tobu into ranked search I just get depressed. There are great maps with songs from said artist, just none of them made it to ranked and every time I look for new releases there is at least one song I've already played before in a slightly different version...

Eurobeat is actually very nice to map. The vocals and instruments (namely synths and kick/snare) support each other well, the former giving many interesting intensity changes throughout the songs. There are plenty of quarter beats to map for rhythmical variety as well, making it still fun to play despite being a bit repetitive.

...With the only difference being that the huge majority of ranked japanese maps are neither from rhythm games, nor above 160 BPM, nor with engaging rhythm, and are filled with repetition. The Anime Intros mapped to be DT'd and farmed,which today make up a huge chunk of the japanese-language maps, deny any point in your video, yet are nowhere to be seen or mentioned in it, apart from that 5 second ending of Harumachi Clover. Frankly, people don't call osu! a weeb game because it has japanese music, I've yet to seen something like Camellia or Lite Show Magic (both composers you showed as japanese in this video) labeled as "weeb music". What gets osu! the title "weeb game" is the overabundant mess of anime intros and songs with similar styles mapped, ranked and farmed in this game, along with players and even known streamers plastering random half naked anime girls all over their skins, nothing else.
@MasterYoshitaka
@MasterYoshitaka 6 жыл бұрын
Another reason why osu! is considered a weeb game is that there is a huge amount of the playerbase that are indeed weebs, yeah. A mo forgot to mention that I bet.

How about EDM? I think with the fast beat and the drop or change in the chorus it fit's perfectly for rhythm games especially because they have a huge climax most of the time which pumps up the tempo at which you are playing

Most instrumental songs in rhythm games are already edm, usually by asian artists. Yes, there is a good portion of western edm, but a lot of it is slower than asian edm

I think the word you are looking for is "effort",since if you have a linear song you would work hard to make it intresting, using 1/4 rythms and what not, but for anime songs they mostly are well timed white red ticks, ez to do and not time consuming like tech maps.

The actual linguistic reason for the syllabic approach is that that is how Japanese is spoken. The Japanese language is a mora-timing-based language, which means that every sound is said for the same length.

Good video, although I still don't understand why seemingly, at least a third of all players have some anime girl as their profile pick, and a half of the song bgs are pics of anime girl(s), and why at least half if not more of the songs that are of japanese origin are from animes. Like wtf why is this game such a weeb magnet?? I mean sure I don't mind japanese songs, players or mappers or anything like that, but why can't they just be normal, why do they gotta be so weeeeeeb
@meawingmeatball9362
@meawingmeatball9362 6 жыл бұрын
Shit you got me RUN AWAY okno, but for real i have no clue what weeb means, if weeb means "people who watch anime" then its pretty clear why alot of the players are "weebs" seeing as the game is full of anime songs and anime styled art all over it and also if you're talking about the hentai pictures yeah that's weird
@SlurpKing100
@SlurpKing100 6 жыл бұрын
Weeb is ppl who watch anime and obsess over it, have their waifus as profile picks, has a myanimelist account, etc. But my question is why is the game full of anime songs and manga art in the first place, like sure have japanese music but atleast use something thats actually somewhat of a pleasure to listen to.
@meawingmeatball9362
@meawingmeatball9362 6 жыл бұрын
like the video said, its just that its much easier to map those songs and also after a while the community just gets used to it yknow and yeah i do agree that the new ranked songs tend to be ... pretty cancerous i still have nightmares from haitai but every once in a while i find a good song so i guess its not that bad and also people put anime girls on their pictures because its the internet but then again my osu picture is a fucking meatball drawing so i don't think i'm any better xd
@SlurpKing100
@SlurpKing100 6 жыл бұрын
But i feel like you could use japanese songs that doesn't sound like underaged girls singing something thats supposed to sound slightly motivational but doesn't actually make any sense for 1 minute. Rock bands like The Oral cigarettes, MY FIRST STORY and Frederic, they are all japanese, and have fitting bpm in their songs, and are easier to maps due to the reasons in this video, and even though i'm not interested in japanese music i really like their songs. But those bands are still much rarer than hime hime and haitai styled songs, for some reason. BTW I'd choose a drawing of a meatball over some anime pic any day.
@meawingmeatball9362
@meawingmeatball9362 6 жыл бұрын
yeah... there's alot of hime hime and haitai bullshit maps because its short and easy to abuse but here's a few that i found that are pretty damn good compared to the normal stuff kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpDcYppjntiGj8U kzbin.info/www/bejne/baXHZn6lndd3nJI kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWOlYoSqe7elrNk if those are the kind of songs you meant then there is some and also maps with easy pp tend to be the most played ones and therefore the maps with good songs but unrewarding amounts of pp are much harder to find since not alot of people play them

5:48 No no no, rhythms exist independently from singing. Yes Japanese language is designed a lot better for articulate rhythms, but that’s doesn’t tell the whole story. Yes I think American pop makes me want to Zzz…, but there is plenty of American/western music that has plenty of complex rhythms. Often rhythmic styles take after a languages articulation, but you don’t have to understand that language to understand where those note are being placed in time. I guess what I’m saying is it is a bit more complicated than that.

Yeaaa well, you are not right, but you are not wrong either. I did some research and it seems like we are both right: gyazo.com/8a33d7fa48d061be9dd7dbe40b1c6c14 But yeah, we can both agree on there should be no "r" sound when you pronounce "osu!".

But half of those Japanese songs are so CRINGE. (granted, the other half ranges from decent to fucking awesome) Some ultra high pitch vocaloid complete with some ultra cringe furry noises that makes my ear hurt and the song in general sounds like it was made for 12 year old girls and not a nearly 30 year old man (me). On the other side, you have RAISE MAH SWORD and the likes, which are just awesome. Anime songs are generally pop or soft rock and those are the genres I like the least. Pop is just bleh and rock is just the weakling brother of glorious METAL. (yes, exceptions, etc.) I appreciate everything that was said in this video and I don't see a reason to disagree with it, but I do agree with the example person in the video: This game DOES need more non-Japanese content. If I have to be the person to map those songs then so be it (hence I'm watching your videos btw). I WILL find the music that 'maps well' that isn't from animes and whatnot. I've found a lot of cool songs in Osu!, many of them from Japan that I will listen to outside of osu! as well, but I still want to play my favorite songs in this game...so I guess I'll just have to make them myself. *shrugs*

I'm soooo tired of 90%of the beatmaps being weeb shit. It's getting tiresome to hear the same 10 high pitched moeblobshit voices on the same fucking piano melody.
