Volvo's XC40 is much more than just a smaller version of the brand's larger SUVs. It gets its own all-new 'CMA' platform and a very distinct design to set itself apart. The result is a slightly unusual alternative to premium-branded compact SUVs like Audi's Q3 and the Mercedes GLA.

The XC40 is a truly amazing car. I ordered a First Edition with all the bells and whistles in a R Design crystal white form. I'm not one for following the crowd so I chose the D4 with real world 38-42mpg. The car puts a smile on my face every day I drive it.

Best in-depth review of the XC40 there is. 👏👏 I’ve just ordered a B4P, Inscription Pro in Glacier Silver with red oxide leather. On the whole, I love it but a few things I don’t like. Plus sides are the ride which is much better than my X1, the seats are more comfortable, the interior feels more expensive, etc. Things I don’t like. The rear still has old style bulbs for indicators, main brake lights and rear fog lights. Come on Volvo, it spoils the look. Apple CarPlay is a £350 option. Finally, there are many safety systems but the majority are options and will push the cost by £2k+. Not good for the ‘safest’ car brand which I’d expect to include more as standard. Spec this car up and it’s around £50k!! Still it suits me in the spec ordered almost perfectly.

I got a D3 Momentum in December after a long line of executive saloons; Jaguar XE, BMW 3 series, Mercedes E Class etc. This is my first suv and front wheel drive and l cannot recommend it highly enough - never going back to rwd. Lots of snow in East Lancashire this winter and the Volvo was far superior. While not as plush as the Jaguar, the interior is very comfortable and the ride is superb. I'm so glad to have changed tack to a Volvo suv.

Just watched your wonderful video yesterday. Here in the United States, the grey and silver paints on the XC40 look matted. However, the coloration on your XC40 looked like true metallic grey. Is there a difference in paint finish between the vehicles Volvo is sending to the U.S. vs those going to Europe?

I have a V40 had for 6 years and now ordered a T3 Momentum auto XC 40 getting delivered end of March .cant wait . I felt a T3 with turbo is more than enough power for,general driving if towing a caravan then go for T4 .

I had a test drive in the T4 R today and loved it. Have it for longer tomorrow but already feel it is the one for me...even against the Porsche Macan I had last weekend on test. The Volvo feels much lighter and nimble to drive...now this did surprise me!!

Lucky me, I’m picking up an inscription version (T5) next week. Had to wait almost 7, yes 7, months for delivery. Volvo must get its act together on this side. It is a lovely little car though.

Picked up my new toy yesterday. Can’t fault it, though the folding floor in rear cargo space is not standard, as I expected, it is an optional extra. All reviews appear to show it as standard it isn’t. Feel a bit miffed!

Ironbuket..... also worth noting, the electric folding rear seats 24:22 are no longer available on UK models I've just been informed by my local dealer when I asked where they were on my loaded inscription pro I just picked up this week.... was really peeved as it was a feature I really liked in the r design demo.....

Thunder grey seems more close to blue than grey. What do you think? Do you think it's giving the feeling of grey? I'm quite worried about my selection but nothing to do. I need to wait till May to see what will come...

I have ordered the R Design so the contrast with the black roof etc should look good. Saying that It's hard to believe OSV don't know the exact colour for certain.

Fantastic car. Hope they keep their promise and bring out a Plugin hybrid. Only other complaint is the lack of physical heater controls. For me and many others, putting everything (especially heater controls) on a touchscreen is not what customers want.

I disagree. Until you test drive and realise that the screen has been properly designed to handle this function, not just as an afterthought then you realise how intuitive it is. It's as hard as launching the camera on your smartphone. VW is the only other car brand that seem to get this right. Though they do have a physical shortcut button too

Josh Ing Ive test drove the latest XC60, VW Touareg and Lexus RX. It’s my personal opinion (and many others), but i prefer manual controls for heater - and you’d be difficult to find a bigger tech geek than me. I no longer own a PC and switched to 100% iPad use for everything

@@3204clivesinclair hi Clive, that may be the case, I just have a different point of view, not entirely disagreeing. I have used so many terrible car touchscreens to mention here, but the worst culprits were Range Rover and Lexus. These should definitely have physical buttons. This Volvo Sensus Connect system however, is the most complete system that I have used outside of BMW iDrive. I understand the need for a tactile touch, so my only criticism of the system is that there is no haptic feedback in lieu of the physical buttons. Until car designers understand how important the HMI is then we are resigned to terrible under par design that half works. What was wrong with the VW interface?

I cannot understand why chose to have Android auto and apple equivalent is an extra? Likewise with front parking sensors and rear parking camera should come as standard across the range. It a large car with limited visibility from those rear pillars and plastic design details....safety oriented Volvo - I think not.

There is a separate compartment above / in the glove box for the owner’s manual. So it doesn’t take away precious space in the glove box itself. I would really expect a reviewer to know such basic stuff about the car reviewed. Other than that a good review (and a great car!).

Really like the looks and styling of the XC40, but I was very disappointed in the gear shift and how it works. Until it's fixed I won't be buying this car. As well, the infotainment system is overly complicated and I don't like using touchscreen because it's dangerous to take your eyes off the road. BMW and Mazda use a toggle by the gear box, it's awesome you do it all by feel and never look away from the road. Considering Volvo is all about safety, I'm surprised they use an all touch screen system.

The car is very good, but it's not good hearing basically every good feature followed by "if you specify the etc-pack" Volvo is really following the Germans.

No, Volvo is nowhere near the Germans (Audi, Mercedes. BMW, etc). On the German cars, you can easily double the price (and usually do...lol). The Volvo has one pack that covers all the software options (here in Norway anyway). IE navigation, smartphone integration, headlights, park assist, intellisafe, and so on.. all in one pack (that is not outrageously priced). Then there are a "gazillion" potential addons with things like electric seats, tow bar (trailer hitch), kids seats, bike carrier chassis, and so on. Mostly just utilitarian, and not something you require. To put it this way..all the cars starts at a relatively even price in their basic configuration. But if i put on about the same options to make the cars as "equal" as i can, all the German cars are at least 30+ percent more expensive than the Volvo. The Volvo is also quieter (better sound proofing) than especially the BMW X1, but also better than the Audi Q3 (the Mercedes is a rung below these 3 alltogether in terms of quality). The one piece of the puzzle i haven't got yet is service costs. I know the Germans are expensive, but i know nothing of the Volvo (service intervals, price, etc). But yeah, the Volvo is head and shoulders above the Germans in terms of what you get for your money.

well went to look at one of these yesterday from the front doors forward yes fine work backwads and no no no no back seat is way to flat those corners are way to big rear door windows to small and whats that horrid plastic blind spot behind the window cant see me down sizing from my old xc90 to this and what happened to the glove box very tiny

looks like german 3 stooges (vw daimler and bmw) are paying for more and more "car review" channels on youtube to increase sales. having said that, XC40 is such a junk: inside space on the back is worse than a compact like polo or corsa. it is such a waste of money when you can buy a Tesla Model 3 standard range with the same price.
