It’s not a credit card holder. Although it can be used for credit cards, the main use is for tickets in car parks (very common in Europe). You go to park your car in a private paid car parking and you receive a ticket so you can pay later when you exit the park. You store there the ticket so you don’t lose it and they’re always at hand

The Foam Engine Cover is there for Passive Safety. After a Crash, if you happen to run over a person, most likely that person‘s head is going to hit the hood, and the hood will give way. The Foam is there so that the person‘s head doesn‘t just hit the hard Engine Cover or even worse, the Engine block. That could lead to a fatal injury, also on lots of models the Hood automatically pops open (on the windscreen side) so that there‘s even more room for preventing serious injuries to a person being run over. Also there‘s the added benefit of reducing engine noise. Hope that clears things up.

Volvo found that the Engine foam cover is much more than a cover, it was designed to deal with the potential of hitting someone and the person hits or slams downward and it reduces the impact. Volvo safety is active and passive. The cars have always been designed to be much more than the surface. I'm still amazed by the things I see and learn about on the 240, related to safety and more. The 240 saved my partner's life on a head-on crash with a Ford Crown Vic. Each car was moving 55 to 60 mph. The other car had the steering wheel in his chest and he lost one eye and suffered many other injuries. My partner fractured her ankle but walked away from the massive crash in Alaska. AMAZING CARS! One more item to think about, Volvo has never built any model to only pass safety requirements. They are so far advanced and have all models face impacts offset, side, and much more long before any other car maker. All other cars mulid them to pass the safety test. Sad, but true. My friend's AUDI seat collapsed due to poor and cheap designs. Volvo would never build a seat to fall apart. Look into the seat problem with many very expensive cars, not Volvo. Volvo is not perfect, but with regards to safety and quality made durable cars, the designs are bar-none in comparative aspects. Lastly, my uncle in Germany with Mercedes, told me that Volvo is a better-designed car with regards to safety, for sure. He was, but now retired, a parts manager, designer, with the company for 31 years.
@Joel-qq5wd3 жыл бұрын
That's not completely accurate. The man who designed it, from BASF PU, said its main function was sound deadening and space saving. He mentioned safety aspect as an additional benefit

About the Volvo logo from their Website: Ancient logotype At the same time as VOLVO was reactivated, the ancient chemical symbol for iron, a circle with an arrow pointing diagonally upwards to the right, was adopted as a logotype. This is one of the oldest and most common ideograms in Western culture and originally stood for the planet Mars in the Roman Empire. Because it also symbolised the Roman god of warfare, Mars, and the masculine gender (as every bird-watcher can tell), an early relationship was established between the Mars symbol and the metal from which most weapons were made at the time, iron. As such, the ideogram has long been the symbol of the iron industry, not least in Sweden. The iron badge on the car was supposed to take up this symbolism and create associations with the honoured traditions of the Swedish iron industry: steel and strength with properties such as safety, quality and durability. The new car also got its name VOLVO written in its own typeface, Egyptian. Today, the iron logo also stands for a brand that radiates modern and exciting design and has a strong emotive connection with the customers.

I think the pedestrian that goes through the bonnet/hood has already had it before he even touches the foam lmao!
@Erafune6 жыл бұрын
If I recall correctly, when a new Volvo collides with a human the hood will pop open a few cm to act like a cushion, so the foam will act like another cushion for the hood to land on if it gets pushed down hard. Rather than the hood bending and breaking any hard plastic. I'm guessing the engine is the most solid part under the hood, so that's where you want to put a cushion for the hood to land on. Just my uneducated guess.
@Mike.W.Dasher6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that was my first thought too. Cars have to have a certain amount of space between the hood and engine, as a crumple zone for pedestrians, which is why the styling of many newer cars look a bit more bulbous in the front.
@BMW2002M106 жыл бұрын
utech-polyurethane.com/news/basf-pu-foam-provides-safer-engine-hood-for-volvo-car-models/ Its appears this was designed for pedestrian safety in the case a of collision, and sound deading. What causes most harm when a car hits a person, is the impact of head on the engine block. This is a very clever way of reducing the extent of injury.

I recently had a 2021 Xc 40 as a loaner car from the Volvo dealer. I was prepared to not like it, but It was pretty good. Quick, quiet, and indeed quirky. I was searching the car for a subwoofer (the sound is very good) and couldn’t see anything obvious. So the airwoofer is a conventional speaker mounted ahead of the firewall and vented to the cabin. Pretty impressive, smart packaging.
