Oswestry to Welshpool Disused Railway lost stations

I go back to explore the Cambrian Railway Line from Oswestry to Welshpool once again in an effort to discover more about the lost stations on this route. With the aid of pictorial evidence I am able to piece together more successfully the history of this railway on the Shropshire/Powis border.

It's only when one views many other lost railway presentations that you realise how good this bloke was. Very few are his equal and as others have said, a superb legacy has been left. And he's very much missed at his local cricket club too. RIP.

Very interesting indeed. Thank you very much. Nearly 70 years ago I used to have to travel every Monday morning from Wrexham to Llanfyllin, where I had my first job. I had to change three times on my journey, at Gobowen, Oswestry and Llanymynech, one of the stations mentioned in this video. The line from Llanymynech to Llanfyllin is clearly seen on the map at one point and passed through Llansantffraid. The single track line from Llanymynech to Llanfyllin has long been closed and it would be interesting to see if any sign of it remains today.

I find your videos fascinating, comparing the present day to how the stations and lines used to look in the past. Many years ago (late 70's, early 80's) i used to do exactly the same thing on the Isle of Wight - following the old lines, finding the stations and other railway related stuff. I had a great adventure walking through the 3/4 mile long Ventnor tunnel, fascinating standing in the tunnel, trying to imagine what it would have been like 30 years previously - full of smoke and the noise of the 02's pulling a six coach set through. Such a shame we lost so many branch lines, but again, 50 years on they make some very interesting walks.

Just got back from Pant today, sadly my dear lady friend was in tow so no chance to sneak off exploring but just had a look on google earth etc. Hope to get back and have a look around. Holden, Llanymynech disused station at 4 mins 50 secs into your video almost under the road bridge. That push bike looked as if it had seen it's days. I bet that could tell a tale or two traveling around that neck of the woods. Great video by the way. Very interesting and informative. Keep up the good work my friend. I had, and still have relatives who live and lived (aunts, uncles and cousins) in and around the Oswestry and mid north Wales area. Beautiful places to visit and stay. That Beech's axing did some damage back in the day, didn't it? Managed to take out all of what was known in my hometown of Stoke On Trent as the "loop line", which had several busy stations that served the good people of the "Potteries" back in the day. Sacrilege!

What a great video. Thank you. Very special for me as I once lived in Buttington station house (the furthest of the station buildings you mentioned within the 1953 picture) during my very early childhood years 1952-1955 and at the time when your photograph was taken. The only remaining item from Buttington station is an apple tree, which was planted in what was the station master's garden, now just undergrowth at the track-side.

There is a Train Sim version of the Cambrian in the 50s being done at the moment and could end up with the Oswestry extension being added on at a later date.

It is sad to see the remains of what was a great era. Many branch lines operating and serving a purpose. Over here in Queensland , just about every single branch line is closed . Some little sections are still open for historical steam train running , but they are always going broke, and the line is normally in bad shape. And only 60lb line and the trains barely reach speeds of 40 kph . Way to many semi trailers on the road , rail corridors reopened would be a good idea , but state governments are to simple minded and tight fisted to do anything.

Have you thought about exploring Moat Lane junction to Llanidloes. the platforms are still there at Moat lane and the station at Llandinam is a private house now with lots of remaining evidence of the railway. the magnificent building that was Llanidloes station is still there.

This has been a compelling watch, well researched and narrated with compassion for a lost culture. It's a great shame Lord BEECHING did what he did which, retrospectively, was a massive environmental error. Finally though, please could you improve the pronunciation of "Llanymynech" as the English failure to pronounce the place name correctly grates on the Welsh speaking ear like a sack of gravel. It must be remembered that half of Llanymynech lies in the nation state of Wales. Thank you for an excellent piece of footage.

Colour photo in 1925 ! I don`t think so ! [ overview shot of Pant station ] .The loco looks like a Ivatt class 2 or BR standard 2 tender engine .With the purple carriages which were of BR colouring ! I would say mid to late 1950s or early 1960s is the photo`s truer date !

yes more than likely a standard BR 2MT being the 50's and 60s where the BR standards were more common place than the older ivatt 2MT's though relitively the same engine just with easier produced parts to lessen waiting times on the building of locomotives :) with 2 BR maroon 2nd class carriages in tow :)

The colour photo, is probably the late 60s as shows a Ivatt 2-6-0 ( the mainstay of this lines motive power until the end ) and maroon coaches, not 1927...but nice video anyway...
