The Railgun needs a lot of power to the fire missile. I learned this in the Gameboy Color Version of this Game Series but I played it by PC online of old Video Game Websites even I even saw the thing fire but the Nuke was a Dud. I wished I could've seen the Metal Gear REX test Data on that disc if I was Snake I would've give the Optical Disc to Otacon that way it would be safe or Hide it somewhere until I got out of torture room when he got captured.

I would think firing a railgun; particularly of this size, would leave some* kind of Electro-Magnetic "footprint" - something that could be detected. idk- thoughts?

I'm not sure if it's possible to detect something like that, but the whole point here was that early warning satellites in MGS's world were being used to detect the fireball from the launch vehicle. You wouldn't have any early warning about launch you weren't looking for.

It's possible but satelites at the time weren't set up to detect magnetic fields
