I kinda like how it's the desire to protect someone that does this. Typically in anime, it's anger, sadness, etc that gives a character a buff. In this case, it's the simple desire to keep someone safe that turns Ichigo into the single scariest thing we see in this series.

Honestly, with a bit less of a power difference, this fight would have been 100/10. I mean, there was no need to have Vasto Lorde Ichigo stomp Ulquiorra so hard if the transformation wouldn't even see the light of the day again XD You would think that with they showing this much of a power difference, this transformation would have it's deserve even match vs Aizen or something but this was the one and only time? nah, I would have loved this fight to be longer if it that was the case.

As much as people try to rationalize ulquiorra NOT being the strongest espada, it's necessary for the narrative that he is. In terms of placement in the story, ichigo's next target must be Aizen. This power boost puts him on or above Aizen's base power. Unohana says his reiatsu is captain level when his shihakusho shows he's only at half strength. And Aizen says he has twice the reiatsu of a captain when he creates wonderwiess. Considering how far beneath Aizen the espada turned out to be, it makes sense ichigo should be able to curbstomp the strongest of them. For story progression, he needs to be that strong considering how much of a power boost Aizen will get.
