i honestly wish more people appreciated how sailor moon itself was a deconstruction of the magical girl genre at its time. it basically did to the genre what madoka magica would do later on in the future.

well technically speaking, there was no magical girl genre before sm, there was majokko (little witch). every single anime title has escaped my head bc it's midnight rn but basically shows consisted of a young (~8yo) girl usually with a magic wand helping others with magic, sometimes transforming but more for undercover reasons. sm really started up the whole transforming heroes fighting evil guys thing (precure then changed the fighting from magic to close-combat). so you can't really deconstruct a genre that doesn't exist yet, but sm totally was a game changer.

I’m convinced that their tiaras work in a similar way to Superman’s glasses. They alter perceptions/memories of people around them so they don’t get recognized unless someone sees them transform and the illusion is broken.

Something me and my sis noticed watching it, quite a few times when a sailor guradian reveals their identity theres an aura around them as if obscuring the girls true identity. Take Minako in S1, when the girls dont recognise her, theres this glowing aura all around her, but when she says shes really Sailor Venus the aura disapears. Exactly the same things happes for Michiru in her reveal to Haruka in S3 as well.

Oh really? Why did Tuxedo Mask recognize Usagi? Also when the arcade is about to blow up Makoto and Ami save Furu and he recognizes them. It doesn't hold up. They get caught pretty often.

My thought was that their transformation items come with a passive glamour spell that obscures the more detailed features and makes them harder to recognize unless they transform while someone is actually watching them. Because it's passive, they are unaware of it's protection, hence Usagi hiding from her little brother out of fear that he might recognize her while she was still running solo. Mamoru doesn't have that Glamour protection, as he's not a Sailor Scout, so removing his mask is all that's needed to reveal his identity. Personally, I much prefer the Precure anime's method of changing the length, cut, style and often color of the girls hair to subtly change their appearances into something less obvious.

The variety of characters personas, side stories and "adult themes" (tragedy, homosexual relationship, treason for change of hearts) is kinda of a surprise for me. I was a kid when my sister discovered this anime and, as a 6-7 years old toddler, I saw this as a "girls cartoon" and never tried to watch it. Thanks for the video.

Pedro Alexandre The original English broadcast censored the deaths and homosexuality. All the characters had different names, too. That said the uncensored version is far more accessible now thanks to Viz redubbing it.

Those 2 episodes got the producers in a bit of trouble as it “upset” the children in Japan. Rewatching it as an adult it’s still pretty gruesome, and it’s one of the most gory episodes. The work they put into the animation to really pull through the sadness of it is spectacular

The first season of Sailor Moon has the most iconic art and animation. It's so much more violent and tragic than later seasons, in my opinion, and also seems purer. While I love the whole series, by the time it hits SuperS the quality of the story nowhere near as good (though the animation was more vibrant).

wow i totally disagree and cannot see how ppl do not see how the dream arc fourth seasons is fullllll of allegories about following our dreams and how this is related to spiritual enlightenment. . it is rich in lessons in spirituality and self discovery and i relate to it the most. the golden crystal and the silver crystal together form the golden rose flame which is another symbolism for the triquetra. and that golden rose flame is chibi usa. in the manga the golden crystal belongs to protector of earth mamoru.

Grew up with the Dic version from the 90s but I love the recent Vic Media version that restored everything to the Japanese original script without any censorship and Western Culturalization that plagued the original English Dub. I like how Rei and maybe even Ami around the first 12 episodes figured that Mamoru/Damien and Tuxedo Mask were the same person, but Usagi either couldn't see it or was in denial about it mainly because Tuxedo Mask seems like such a gentleman and always helps them out, yet he's such a jerk to her for seemingly no reason in his normal persona, which really confuses her. XD Plus, it might be hard to imagine who exactly has superpowers or not and how their not just an ordinary person after all. :p Honestly, I don't blame her. XD Even if I had my suspicions like the other girls, I'd otherwise be really confused too at the same time, second guessing myself, LOL. :p

Sailor Moon was always my favorite. Now that I’m an adult though and have since read and reread the manga a million times over, the manga is my favorite medium. The OG anime has taken a hard backseat to even Crystal and the musicals for me. It’s great in some ways, but it missed the mark in so more ways from what Ms. Takeuchi’s story really was. That being said, it’s always fun and nostalgic to take a trip down memory lane. I spent all my allowance back in the day buying up all the Sailor Moon merchandise at Hot Topic as a teenager - that was the only place you could find that kind of stuff. I got bullied mercilessly - this was back when people thought only weirdos were into that. 🙄. Great video!!! ❤️❤️❤️

I can now imagine the North Pole Homeowners Association receiving complaints about the Dark Kingdom's disruptive shenanigans at Point D. Most of them come from three prominent residents: Toyshop owners Mr. & Mrs. Kringle and Daily Planet Reporter Mr. Kal-El. The Classic 90's Anime is what I watched on regular broadcast TV early in the morning before getting on the bus to go to school... then it started coming on in the afternoon... then in the early 2000s it hit Cartoon Network. It was the terrible DiC dub BUT its also iconic for the theme song and some of the one liners they do. It was honestly the first anime I ever watched and got me into all of it.

As much as I love the anime, they did sailor saturn/Tomoe so dirty. She’s my favorite, and she barely has any recognition in the actual anime. Really, I wish ALL of the sailor scouts were as present as the rest. I rarely ever see anyone mention Sailor Pluto. Side note, I’m glad crystal is more true to the manga, even though the original anime will always be my favorite.

As someone who LOVED this show growing up and has recently read the manga and watched Sailor Moon Crystal, I thought I was going crazy. The guardians have SO much more to do and so much more development and personality in the original anime from the 90s. I know many episodes were "filler" while they waited on more manga to be written, but I think it was to the shows benefit. When I got to the end of "season 1" in the manga I was so confused and just kept thinking... that's it? I haven't learned anything really about any of the guardians at all. This video just reminded me how much more there was in this version of the show! I think I need a rewatch!

Sailor Moon is running in Germany these days on the small chanel "sixx" . The german translation is very accurate to the original, but we had different opening and ending. They now broadcast the series with the original Moonlight Densetsu and left the comercial bumpers in, although germany has different rules for tv comercials, so the bumpers make less sense.

Clerical note: The Four Kings of Heaven were never revealed to’ve formerly been Endymion’s Knights in this version-they were just from the Dark Kingdom. Also, I’m pretty sure Silver Millennium was the Moon Kingdom’s other name in either one, not the era in which it existed. 😅

@@chaosgetsuga6114 True, the 90s anime kind of changed some of the original lore for some of the characters, such as how the Golden Crystal wasn't Endymion's Starseed and was Helios's instead, Amoness Quartet don't become Asteroid Senshi, Queen Nehelenia once being a normal person instead of Chaos, and Chibi Chibi being related to Sailor Galaxia instead of Sailor Moon/Sailor Cosmos. So it's possible the 4 generals didn't start off as the 4 Heavenly kings either?

Hearing the full lore makes me love this show even more. So many people shit on the voice acting (and rightfully so, although I think the ADR director is the one to blame because there are no action/background sounds in most scenes...but I digress) but I think this series is so wonderful. Great job!^^ I'm always a little scared when I see videos like this, cause Sailor Moon is my passion and I know everything about it. But you did an wesome job explaining it!^^ By the way, in the 90's anime the Shitennou weren't Endymion's guardians in their past lives - at least it is never stated in the show. But I'm glad you included it, cause it's such a pity, this was not in the anime. I personally love all versions of Sailor Moon the same! Even PGSM (live action series) and the many musicals! I'd recommend watching PGSM - it may seem strange at first, but it has an amazing story later on and the characters are even better depicted as in the old anime! The first season is one of the best!^^ I think it has the least amount of plotholes and had such a good story and good fillers.

I know Naoko Takeuchi used Christian themes and imagery in Sailor Moon to the point that part of Rei and Usagi's rivalry was their different values (Rei's traditional Japanese Shinto beliefs vs. Usagi's Christianity) but holy Christ on the cross image at 4:39!!! Surprised I never saw that one before!

Usagi being christian was a weird old rumor based on artwork of her wearing crosses, but that's just a fashion thing in Japan. If she was that would be fine, but there's no textual evidence in the show of her arguing with Rei about religion or values. Also Rei literally goes to Catholic school and her teachers are nuns. Japan doesn't see religion the same was the west does. The cross imagery and stuff is in a lot of anime CLAMP does it all the time bc it's cool imagery and is an easy shorthand to get across the idea of godliness and sacrifice, but people in Japan are rarely one religion. The saying is that you're born shinto, live an atheist, and die a buddhist. Religion is overlapping and syncretic there. But yeah, Usagi isn't ever actually represented as Christian, and even if she was, Japanese culture isn't really the type to argue on values based on religion bc religion is kind of all one thing there.

I'm honestly glad you covered Sailor moon. I know for the anime culture it's considered "basic" or "baby's first" and other names that made me pretty angry. I grew up with her for close to 25 years of my life, I'm 31 now and can never forget such passionate characters that widen my mind to so many things along with my sisters. And because the series was heavily censored in the earlier years of release to the states, a lot of people really don't know so much about the series and the characters. The story will disappoint you after the 2nd arc. The old school anime heavily deviates from the manga story line, I would suggest watching Crystal for the most accurate story line experience. The og anime is much more light hearted and it excels at building the girls up as the best of friends.

You mention Queen Beryl & The Four Heavenly Kings being reincarnated… but that’s never mentioned in the show (& I don’t think in the manga). I thought they were sealed along with the rest of the Dark Kingdom. They look down on other humans & don’t really seem to associate with humanity, so I’m not sure the reincarnation theory makes much sense. They got sealed away.

When you watched both in sub and dub, and both versions still eff you up emotionally. Originally I grew up with the English dub so I didn't know that they died until I rewatched the series in its original sub. Overall, still the best anime ever.

It was in an interview, Takeuchi said that one of her influences of Sailor Moon came from the original Super Sentai series, Himitsu Sentai Gorenger. Around the time Sailor Moon came out, I got deeply into that series as well as Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, way before I learned of its roots from the Super Sentai series, Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger. Now today not only am I still a fan of Sailor Moon and Power Rangers, but also a fan of Super Sentai and other Tokusatsu series, especially Kamen Rider.
