I think that you should have mentioned that the show takes place in Juban, which is a rather upper class neighborhood in Tokyo. and the fashion is very inspired from Juban, being very rich, very preppy, very opulent. and in world, the girls in sailor moon are all... Comfortable to say the least. Ami's mom is a doctor, Minako is comfortable enough to be able to travel all around the world and speaks English fluently, Usagi lives in a pretty nice house, and Haruka and Michiru both makes money out of their career as prodigee. The only people who struggle a bit economically are Rei bc being a temple priestess doesn't make u that much cash, but she still has the support of her politician father and Makoto whose parents are dead, which is why she learned how to cook in the first place.
@BluePenguin2002 жыл бұрын
Makoto is an orphan though and self-sufficient. Also Rei’s family owns the temple and her father is a politician.
@dorothywasrighttho51292 жыл бұрын
@@BluePenguin200 oh yeah, i forgot that Makoto's parents are dead... But wait, that doesn't explain her living alone in an appartement ... How can she even afford that... Let's not dwell on it too much. As for Rei, it's true that her family owns the temple but a lot of time, there are storylines about her grandfather being sick and not being able to afford medecins or storyline about some struggle at the temple which makes less money than usual. She is not destitute or anything and her relationship with her father is only explored in the after stories in the manga and it's true that he does give money. But she is the only girl who is seen actively struggles with her finance in the series at all.
@BluePenguin2002 жыл бұрын
@@dorothywasrighttho5129 There are some explanations of Japanese laws and culture provided in articles online that can explain Makoto’s lifestyle, as unconventional as it is, but yeah I agree that’s strange. I’m not sure which version of Sailor Moon you’ve seen but I certainly never recall any episodes or chapters where Rei’s grandpa can’t afford medicine or has any financial struggles really. Most of the problems at the shrine tend to be due to some enemy involvement on the grounds towards grandpa, Rei, or even Yuuichirou/Chad (in some versions). Keep in mind, that temples in Japan actually do tend to take in lots of money due to the right to not pay taxes, and they are visited all year round for ceremonies like weddings, funerals, or of course New Years, alongside tourists and other visitors. I’d argue that Rei probably has the most ‘stable’ income (although as you said she’s not destitute) and the shrine can even afford to employ Yuuichirou or Jadeite. However, it is still somewhat of a business, so we do see episodes where Rei gushes about how well the shrine is doing on certain days, and the other girls are shown to help out and are even being paid for their efforts. In fact, the only times I ever remember the sailor senshi complain about money is when Usagi and Chibiusa are out of pocket money😅 But this is also an anime in which mamoru is also apparently a millionaire orphan like Makoto xD
@BluePenguin2002 жыл бұрын

Usagi/Serena wears very feminine, cute outfits with childish prints like bunnies, bows, and hearts, Ami/Amy prefers pastel colors and cardigans, Rei is very sleek and sophisticated, etc. Makoto/Lita is an interesting example.I love the way they handle her style because she’s a gentle, feminine girl who is still “the muscle” of the group. Her clothes are girly, wearing turtlenecks, pants, pencil skirts, etc. but they accentuate her fuller figure and keep her looking large and powerful.

One thing worth mentioning is that the Sailor Suits in the manga were all given a unique quirk. Eventually Naoko phased out most of them out with each transformation upgrade where everything got identical in all but color. Ami's sailor suit had no arm cuffs on the top and her earrings had 3 studs in each earlobe. Makoto's had a pink potpourri belt and rose shaped earrings. Minako's belt was the Venus Love Me Chain and her earrings were simple studs. Rei's outfit had a brooch clasp above her skirt (Naoko almost always forgot to draw it) and star shaped earrings. Also none of the footwear were identical. Ami wore knee high boots, Rei high heels, Makoto laced/heeled boots, and Minako heeled shoes with ballet ribbons. The PGSM outfits included the unique outfit flourishes, but the anime didn't. All versions kept the shoes though. The Outers had unique outfit touches too. Michiru wore ballet heels and short gloves and a choker with a jewel and gold clasp. Haruka wore short boot, plain choker, short gloves and a single hoop earring. Setsuna had no stripes on her sailor collar, large shield earrings, a choker with a garnet, a belt with keys on it, and no arm-hole cuffs like Ami. Hotaru had a completely unique sailor suit with petal sleeves, an elaborate brooch, saturn shaped earrings with a dangling tear shape, and a flared crystal brooch. Chibiusa has her specific brooch and odango shields as does Sailor Moon and they have Sailor Moon had the super upgrade, but the Sailor Moon outfit had multiple different variations on the moon tiaras/earrings, her transformation brooches and her red boots. The Eternal Sailor Moon design is kind of a "and the kitchen sink" design, so I won't get into it though.

This video was a delight! I'll admit, as much as I love magical girls, I was just too young to get into Sailor Moon. (my introduction was the often forgotten Mermaid Melody) But even with that, I've always admired the style of the series. It's interesting how it's influenced fashion in future anime, and changed how magical girls are designed. Looking at series before it, which also tended to only have one character, the "magical outfit" was usually a lot more casual, and didn't have matching outfits for the team. Then you have Sailor Moon, and boom! PreCure is a big one, famous for its beautiful matching team designs. Even western series like Winx club got in on it I always like how anime tends to be a lot wilder in their character's outfits, since western cartoons tend to be a lot simpler and less fashionable. PreCure, as I mentioned, always has great outfits. Symphogear's outfits are... Unique. They're certainly wild but I like that, it conveys a lot of personality. Magia Record is very similar, in that a lot of both the magical and casual outfits are often absurd, and definitely a huge mixed bag, but what's good is very good. And I can't go without mentioning Cardcaptor Sakura, which honestly probably deserves a video in itself Some of my person favorites and biggest inspirations come from the very obscure Aikatsu series, which is consistently stellar in both it's concert and casual outfits So yeah, magical girl fashion. It's pretty cool

I’m proud that I’ve became an instant fan of the anime since I was 6 years old and as a 33 years old man I’m still a going strong. I had great tastes from the get go lol. I’m amazed how the style especially of the art books is still very much trendy today. Naoko definitely knew where to find her inspiration. Chanel x Sailor Moon is forever iconic.

So this video made me cry like Usagi has arrived. The impact. Like it’s such an amazing thing to see something as much as manga and to show impact sooooooo many people.

Hot take: the og 90s anime is superior to Crystal in every way and I say it as the manga fan. Sometimes manga material doesn't translate as good in anime.

Naoki Takeuchi should have been a designer rather than an animator/writer, but ironically, I think she has influenced entire generations of fashion because of that

I always wondered where the sailor thing came from. It’s very interesting. I love the Sailor moon outfits. So cute. Edit: it makes sense that Pluto would have high fashion and expensive outfits. Pluto is named for Pluto and Pluto was the god of the underworld and mineral riches like gold and diamonds.

I’m fully convinced that the reason I was so into fashion and so picky with clothes since I was a toddler, was because of my love and obsession with Sailor Moon. Never in my tiny years I’d thought that those clothes were actually real. Gorgeous video!! ❤

I loooove that Naoko Takeuchi chose different design houses to represent the heroes and villains in this series. Picking different costume themes for good vs evil is obviously super common, but drawing inspiration from Chanel vs Mugler (and others of course, for both) is just....next level.

I love the fashion of this anime, because the pieces can still be found or adapted to look like in the anime but if you wear them they don't look out of place even if the show is old😍🥰

This was fascinating! One of my favourite videos. I knew Naoko Takeuchi was fashion influenced, but not to this extent.

In the manga author notes, Takeuchi mentions that both Princess Snow Kaguya and the Snowdancers were based on some art deco glass and porcelain figures. The Snowdancer statues was a porcelain statue from a German designer. The Snow Kaguya statue was a milky glass art deco work called "Salome". The statue is recreated in the manga, appearing as Snow Kaguya's "body" that grows from the crystal and Himeko later smashes it to try to save Kakeru.

This is a great video! I do have a couple of notes about the inspiration of the sailor senshi uniform, though! On top of the obvious serafuku inspiration, the sailor senshi uniforms were also heavily influenced by figure skating outfits (in fact, one of Naoko's early manga that directly preceded Codename Sailor V, The Cherry Project, actually focused heavily on figure skating)! That's where a lot of the inspiration for the general silhouette came from, and why the fuku are much more revealing than traditional school uniforms. Also, you said that the only variation between the senshi's uniforms were in colour, which isn't entirely correct. Other than the obvious difference in their shoe styles, in the manga, each of the senshi actually had some sort of unique design element that set them apart! One major difference is that the inner senshi's collars all had at least one stripe (Moon, Chibi Moon, Mercury, and Jupiter having 2, Venus and Mars having 1), whereas the outer senshi (Saturn, Neptune, Uranus, and Pluto) had no stripes. (The Sailor Starlights and the Galactica Senshi also had no stripes on their collars, although this is because the serafuku inspiration was much looser). Sailor Mercury's fuku was missing its sleeves (or shoulder pads? Not sure what to call them), most likely to make it closer resemble a one-piece swimsuit as her character is associated with water. Sailor Mars had a red gem attached to her belt, which apparently helped her generate her fire? Either way, hers is easily the most subtle difference. Sailor Jupiter notably wore the Rose Belt, which is a pink belt with a translucent container which held rose petal potpourri. Jupiter used this potpourri to perform one of her attacks, Flower Hurricane. The antenna on her tiara was also out almost all of the time. Similarly, Sailor Venus wore her jeweled chain around her waist all the time in the manga, which she also used for a number of attacks. Sailor Saturn had a special crystalline brooch instead of the default circular one, symbolising both her beauty and her chaotic nature. Sailor Pluto wore a belt with a set of time keys attached, as well as having larger earrings. The only ones lacking in an unique design element of some sort were Sailor Uranus and Neptune, most likely owed to their later introduction (Saturn was introduced at the same time but was given unique design elements because she needed to be differentiated from the others). It's a shame that most of these design choices didn't carry over to the anime, but it really helped to set each senshi apart, even if just by a little.

I've been a Sailor Moon fan pretty much my entire life but never made these connections! It's amazing to see how often she was able to incorporate fashion into the series and makes me want to rewatch it again to look out for them!

If you decide to do more on anime, I'd love to see an analysis on the clothing from Bleach. The author, Tite Kubo, is widely considered to be one of the best costume designers in manga and it's well known that if he didn't go into anime, he would have been a fashion designer. The outfits are stylish and each one has a lot of hidden meanings and symbolism to the characters.
