Nope, never saw Plant play guitar before. I gotta admit when I 1st started watching the hall of fame vid. I was like “what is this?” What are you talking about, Otis? But as it goes along Neil’s energy level picks up the whole band ‘till they’re just grinning and have a great time! A really fun jam, thanks Otis! Love you too, brother…

Neil is the bomb. His spirit was similarly on display at the end of the Jakob Dylan documentary about Laurel Canyon-he didn't agree to an interview but he let them film him rocking a guitar solo + he was much older than he was in 1995...

I never noticed! Mike Damone giving advice to Mark Ratner. Cameron Crowe would have known that so I'm thinking that they used a little artistic license in using Kashmir. From a contextual standpoint, Kashmir is really a great choice for that scene -- all that tension building. 😄 Fast Times is a great movie. Sean Penn steals every scene that he's in. And My Favorite Martian as Mr. Hand??? ROFL. Happy New Year Otis!

Hey Happy New Year Otis and Amy! Ugh, what an inauspicious beginning, I'm afraid we're gonna be steppin' in a LOT of it this year, maybe next, too...! I thought of that Guy Clark song, Queenie's Blues: Queenie's getting buried, It's time to dig the hole; New Year's Day in Santa Fe Broke mean and it broke cold. Seems like Neil's collab'in' with everybody through the years, Zep, Devo, REM. Even commandeered a Dylan gig once, and Bob's like, Sure, Neil, whatever...

Otis! You are the man. I simply love your stories, music, and especially your whole vibe. You are a nice oasis in these troubling times… Although wiki doesn’t list your age, I’d guess we are close. I was born in ‘66 and also saw Song Remains at a midnight movie in about 1982. I was a Southern rock bass player, but loved Zep, as most did. I too immediately noticed the Fast Times discrepancy, and for years blamed it on idiocy, for lack of a better word. Now I’d guess it was possibly intentional. I could see writer Cameron Crowe liking every aspect of using the controversial title of that unnamed album that was known as “ZOSO” in my neighborhood. But then what song to have kick in? Kashmir is such an in your face iconic riff, and works perfectly. I’d guess different songs from 4 were tried and didn’t have the right immediacy. Maybe someone like a gaffer suggested Kashmir? Then a few more tokes and Crowe says “Yeah! We’ll go with Kashmir and no one will notice!” And if they do….It might cause peeps to talk about the movie. Pure conjecture of course 😎🎸🎶

Watching it again and still blown away by the way Neil just steps up and starts shredding. Like, "Outta my way. I've got something to say". Honestly, the only thing better with LZ is Celebration Day, Live @ The 02 Arena. Led Zeppelin at their finest in that performance from 2007 I believe. Hands down. If you have not seen it yet. Turn it up. You will be amazed. Right outta the gate with the opener from their very first album. Good Times bad Times. Jason Bonham. His poppa gotta be proud as F.

Hey Otis! Love your videos, man! Regarding the scene in Fast Times At Ridgemont High: The character, Mark Ratner, playing the wrong Zeppelin album to begin the date he’s been thoroughly coached on, is the comedy of the scene. His “cool” buddy Damone tells him to play side one of LZ IV, but Mark’s not cool, like Damone. At the start of the date, Mark immediately flubs the opportunity, and plays the more angular Kashmir, which doesn’t have the desired effect. Instead, it brings on an awkwardness that lasts the rest of the date. Just my take. 🤘

(I am O L D) (PS saw LZ live 1970, Memphis). Otis, I hope you know Plant and Krauss music. Plant has always insisted on going his own NEW way, not resting on his laurels,, not recreating previous creations. Plant over the years=amazing. The real. Well, like Neil. This is ART.

I always remember (accurately, I hope) the Bob Dylan 30th anniversary concert on TV, which featured dozens of musicians performing his songs, and then at the end everyone was on stage to sing a final song. Everyone but Neil Young was standing there calmly singing and some strumming guitars. Neil was rockin out on his guitar, putting his whole body into it! Maybe not tactful, since Bob was supposed to be the focus of the evening, but you can't deny Neil's spirit! I don't pay much attention to the RnR Hall of Fame, so I didn't know about the Led Zeppelin performance.

Well I’ll be, I hadn’t seen that performance either. So I just went straight to it after watching your vid, good stuff, I might have a vague memory of seeing Plant playing an acoustic from some old zeppelin clip. Like you I listened to so much Zep back in the 80s (and into the early 90s a bit when I discovered a record shop in Bloomington that had a bunch of Zep bootlegs) that I just don’t listen to them much anymore. By the way the drummer is Michael Lee, he played on most of Plant’s solo records and then on the 2 Page/Plant albums.

It's been said that Down by the Seaside from Physical Graffiti was written because Jimmy Page and Robert Plant wanted to write something like Down by the River. I like the way they'd snag licks and lyrics and try to spin it into a whole new entity by pushing the studio as an instrument to it's limits. Neil often has a completely opposite approach. I like to think of the Dead Man soundtrack as the perfect codex for understanding his music, it's like the stories of his songs and the yearning of the music are faraway boulders crashing in a canyon, and by the time it reaches you, there's a melody through the echoing.

Fast Times was the first time LZ allowed one of their songs in a movie, and they only did it as a favour to Cameron Crow, who had been on tour with them when he was writing for Rolling Stone. They wouldn’t let him have anything off IV for the movie, but they were much more generous by the time he made Almost Famous
