I have to say, that's a great way of doing sets - having them all have a nice balance to them, but no shared colours between them all!

I adore these paints and treated myself to the Naturale plus some extras. Definitely not inexpensive-I had to save up and then show some restraint-but the softer tones inspire me to create, and Alina Gallo was very nice and quite generous with samples. Also, I feel like I can trust her skill for creating close substitutes for dangerous, unstable, or unavailable old/ancient pigments.

I have a lot of A Gallo colours now and they are just so lush. I'm thinking of stringing the hand painted little wrappers together to make a mini paper chain Christmas decoration - I couldn't bring myself to throw them away after opening up each pan. 😂

If they can afford to give them away to youtubers they don't need our money. Do what I did. Just buy the pigments in powder form fir less than $50 and make your own for life. Just add optical brightners when you want that bright modem look

I paint detailed, realistic florals and fruits. I invested in the A. Gallo 48 pan plus 4 (you can fit an extra pan in each row). I have found it is very difficult to create with more than two layers. I use 100% cotton, 300gsm paper. Any layer after the second will lift the layers under. I am used to Sennelier, Daniel Smith, M. Graham and a few others. I don't have this problem. It is taking some getting used to and perhaps these aren't the paints for me but I will be trying 600gsm paper, so we shall see ...

Yes, I love A Gallo for a one or two-layer project, but not for multiple layering. It took me awhile to discover that character of the paint but if you know what you are doing and can do it with one or two layers, this may work for you. I also have the Signature palette and in time may get some other ones. The granulation aspect of the paints also is challenging if you are not expecting it.

I think there is a watercolour painting medium which facilitates multiple layers. I remember an article in THE ARTIST magazine.

I have this very set, but no Hercolano Red minus a couple of others in it. Customer services is amazing. Having said that, no smell of rosemary oil for me. Also have a problem with some pigments that just won't wet easily and are way too light with no expansion. I also feel they needed a red of some sort. It is special for sure, but not my favourite. However, their dot card is exquisite.

I just got some A Gallo and they are so lovely. They are my new favorite. Also a new fav art supply store. Those of you in the US, Jackson's is fab. They always say to allow 10 days for shipping, but it's only taken that long once. They are fantastic to work with. Their website can be a bit flakey, but it works if you try a few times lol. I love Blick's, but they don't carry much that isn't the standard brands that you can find most anywhere (assuming you, unlike me, have an actual art supply store nearby.)

I have and love this palette! I think it is exactly what they say ~ natural. It’s great for painting whatever you see in plein air whether it be urban or landscape/beach scenes. I love it for plein air because I don’t have to mix these paints ~ they are beautiful as they are. That makes them quick and convenient. Thanks for your thoughts on them.

Two points; First, ironically, muted color is what is needed in most landscapes, and happily this pallette is on the right track. Second, it seems the paint world has caught up with the Lapis Lazuli legend, I can think of many other blues that are produced by several manufactures that are more exciting than this LL. But hey, in this pallette it fits.

My husband got my first set of 12 A Gallo colors, for my b'day in November. They are amazing!! The smell alone makes them a delight to work with. My nose is super over-active, to the point that I can smell Arches paper when it gets wet - 😒, so using these paints with that paper was a wonderful balance. If and when I can justify getting more of them, I will, but for now they are just too expensive. Not that they aren't worth it!!!

Absolutely smitten with that Potter's Pink, I feel like usually Potter's Pinks tend to be more dusty, red-pinks, but this feels like a more bright, magenta-pink-- like it's not Opera Pink by any means, but on a scale of Potter's Pinks, I feel like it's the closest one to that end of the spectrum, and I absolutely love that

These are gorgeous. The "Super Granulating" series from Schmincke is very popular. I'd get this set If you like those but want to make your own mixes. Mix with the Quin and Phthalo colors you already have. You'd get the beautiful granulation and separation of pigments. Add in some iridescence and bam gorgeousness. I want the whole set but it's I can afford the set. I'll probably get 3 or 5 pans. Thanks so much for putting this video together. I've been so curious about them. Based on this video, I am not at all convinced that A. Gallo paints are worth the exorbitant price tag. I do understand that the company is generous towards the influencers and therefore the reviewers might feel obliged to reciprocate. What's needed, however, is a scenario whereby a reviewer buys these paints with their own money and honestly compares them with existing brands. Such a comparison would reveal whether there are colours among the A. Gallo range that are genuinely unique and worth trying. That would be the key difference between a review and an advertisement. For example, Daniel Smith paints are rather expensive in the UK (though not as expensive as A. Gallo). And so there are helpful reviews that tell us which colours of the DS range can be left aside and which are interesting and unique.

I’m a bit of a fan of A. Gallo, and back a few years ago I wanted to support the company when it seemed to be a smaller operation and more narrowly focussed on providing or duplicating old-style colours from the perspective of an historian. So, I have a lot of but not all the paints. The Naturale palette pairs well with Schmincke, but can be overwhelmed by the stronger Schmincke colours. The Lapis Lazuli, as the video mentions, is better than any other I’ve tried. I find myself reaching for my A. Gallo palette instead of other brands, just to enjoy them. For whatever my non-influencer opinion is worth! I’d recommend sampling from the Naturale range over the other sets, and choose only one of the various Yellow/Gold Ochres and similar, which are lovely but redundant. The metallic gold is lovely, but just one of many nice metallic watercolours out there. Zirconium Blue is pretty but too weak for me. The Morellone is stunning, and the Buff Titanium is, if you have use for a buff titanium, which I didn’t until I tried this one, a solid option. I’d describe them as a less excitable M. Graham, a more “natural” feeling Sennelier, and a less… I need an adjective… bombastic(?) Schmincke. MG, Sennelier, and Schmincke suit my tastes, and DS and WN absolutely do not suit me, if that helps for comparison.

I agree. I think a side by side with other professional paints/pigments would be really useful to compare them against. From someone who does not have the paints, but makes my own watercolour paints, I think they are probably lovely paints to use. I have watched just about every review on youtube on them because they fascinate me so much, being handmade paints themselves. At at the end of the day, they are just watercolour paints, made professionally and to a high standard it looks, but still just paint. And I don't think they are going to outperform any other professional range. All professional watercolour ranges are pretty similar, just with different qualities. Sennelier is light and transparent, daniel smith is ultra intense in colour and have unique granulating colours etc. I reckon these paints shine in what colours they offer that no other company does. Their potters pink is pretty unique. Lapis Lazuli of course. Their zircon blue is also a unique pigment. The fig green is unusual but easily mixed. Same goes for the Copper Blue. The colour selections for the palettes are unusual, and I think that's great for those who are really passionate about unique watercolour paints/sets. At the end of the day, I think these are really, just luxury paints. And for the most part, any other professional brand of watercolour would be comparable, except for in the case of unusual pigments. I don't think the everyday painter, or hobbyist needs them. They seem suited for professionals, who can justify the cost as part of their work, and people who are just ultra passionate about their paints and don't mind spending the extra buck to get the most luxurious paint on the market. Or alternatively, these paints could be an exceptionally meaningful gift. I just don't think these paints are for everyone, or even the majority, with the pricetag they have. Which is probably a very reasonable pricetag when the labour required to handmake the paints is considered. But I don't think they are an investment, or anything so special that one must get them even when they already have a functional set. The paints will just be used, at the rate any other paint will be used. Just my 2 cents on the paints.
@gnostie
@gnostie 2 жыл бұрын
@@Chloe-zr9lk I agree. Even if money played no role in this, most of us already have our normal palettes, go-to paper and a collection of brushes we know get the job done. When another manufacturer comes along with their products, I don't think many people with an established practice are going to suddenly uproot their setup and start from zero with the new manufacturer. Which is why what you wrote makes a lot of sense. From what I've seen on KZbin so far, I'd be curious to see the following in person: notturno, zirconium blue, pietra rosa, harbor blue, olive green deep, dark forest, morellone, indigo and their numerous and interesting neutrals. I think I'll get a dot card and see how my beloved Saunders takes Gallo paints, then reassess which, if any, to get as half pans.
