Okokok. I know I've come to love granulating and opaque colors, but this palette reminds me of when and why I fell in love with watercolors. This is the lost gorgeous mixing chart I have eeeeever seen 😭😍😭 Like, I literally can't handle it. I hope you get it framed 💜

I really like the hint of the mixing dots. On the yellows I think I will add to mine. At times I really make a mess of them and I dont like it for future paintings.

Oooo having a second source to pull yellows from when mixing is a great idea! Like having two water cups to keep the colors clean, I’ll definitely use that with my new palette (also the masking tape for the color mixing chart I need to make one of them for myself)

Just had a thought while watching this....maybe nail tape ya know the really thin tape used in nail art would be good for this type of thing...not sure how it would hold up to water application but i have a bunch lying around so will give it a go...tried the whole nail art thing but didnt have the patience for it i dont like working small lol

Hello Dr. Oto, love your videos especially this one since I'm planning on a palette similar to yours. I would love to have a purely daniel smith palette but that just feels economically impractical since watercolor is mostly just a hobby for me. So holbein+daniel smiths are the way to go. Have you tried white nights as well? they're even cheaper than Holbein and has less opaque colors, and more of a western style watercolor. I heard there are some lightfast issues, but those i think are easy to avoid with some internet research. Again, amazing channel! :)

Lovely chart. I have just added an irgazine yellow in preference to green gold, same pigment as Kremer's, but I bought it as Charteuse from Isaro as buying a single pan from Germany is not cost effective. If I tried to make a chart of my main box I would have difficulty as it is not all transparents, I have different types of watercolour for different purposes. I love weird neutrals, some opaques, high granulators etc., and have not the heart to be ruthless with any of them! I think I would lose track of what I was doing if I tried to make a large chart, and mess it up. Isn't it wild just how much variation you can get from such small amounts of pigment mixed in so many ways? My pigments finally arrived, I have wanted to do this since I first walked into Cornelissens over 20 years ago!

First of all, I love your “systems-thinking” approach-as a newbie who ❤️’s vibrant transparent color, you are saving me tons of time! Second, why Vermillion Hue, which Holbein lists as opaque? Tell me more about that... Thank you 😊

She talks about each color in the video. She said that she grudgingly left Vermillion hue on her palette because it is a very good neutralizing color for Phthalo Blue Y.S. She mentions it around 13:20 in the video.

This is a magnificent video but the dried colors are more important to me than the juicy videos of wet paint. The loss of chroma and shifts in hue seem to vary from paint to paint. I haven't seen anyone build this in to their watercolor comparisons.

That's a huge mixing chart! How do you store it? It looks like something that would be nice to have on your wall. I have some of the colors you have on your palette. The Holbein ones(Pyrrole Rubin and phthalo blue red shade) are for my mini skintone palette and Quin gold, quin rose and rose of ultramarine are on my (mini again lol) DS palette. They are all indeed, beautiful colors!

I have been wondering about using that particular palette. I've been wanting to get one but I was wondering if you close that or just leave it open on your desk. Doesnt the paint fall out or cross contaminate if you close it?

It is a very warm palette. I have to say the Pthalo Green has always annoyed me with its toxic colour in the palette I got as a set. The White Night Palettes seem to only come with mixing greens and no convenience green as such.

First off... I love you. Secondly, can I buy a miniature print of this? Or perhaps a 24"×24"/12"×12"? I would love to have this mixing chart as a reference. Is there a free downloadable version of it? This would come in handy when trying to figure out what colors I want to create. Prease?

Was that a single sheet of paper? Or did you have to tape them together on the back side to make the chart? And if it is a single sheet, what is it? I'd like to make a huge chart like that with my paints. My gosh, it is just so pretty. I love it, it's a work of art in itself. *heart heart*
@OtoKano
@OtoKano 6 жыл бұрын
EtherealOde yes it’s a single sheet of paper! For a 22 color palette, it’s perfect number to use a full imperial sheet as they are usually 22 inches wide. I just had to cut a 22 inch by 10cm strip and use that to label the colors on the top. The square and the color names on the left hand side is all one sheet. Hope you have fun making your own!

That's the palette of my dreams, I'd put a neutral orange there but other than that this one is great! How I wish I could afford it! I used to have some tubes of Pebeo Fine, Grumbacher Academy, Winsor & Newton and M. Graham but I don't have them anymore like most of my art stuff, I'm trying to start again from nothing (it's a long and nasty story, I don't really wanna share) and now I'm just using cheap Pebeo Studio tubes. Not much is available to buy unless you wait for the main two stores to restock the better brands (they sell out fast because they import little amounts), find small dealers to bring stuff from other countries or go to a place that has a high markup. Now I miss when I lived in the US and got nice materials that I don't have anymore... Sorry, I'm kinda pitiful right now. I'm still fighting to oust that mindset. Your videos are actually helping me with the whole starting over with my 12 colors and some charts and experiments. I actually discovered really nice possible mixes with my cheap tubes, it's made me cheer up a lot actually! I just wish I could get Quin. Magenta and a good cold red, and some Ultramarine because Alizarin Crimson doesn't cut it anymore, because of the fading, and Cobalt Blue falls a bit short sometimes, and I loooove Prussian Blue but it's too unpredictable. I miss my magenta and ultramarine tubes the most. Keep making great content, please!

Dr. Oto Kano Yes, they are! Before the bad stuff happened, I was hoarding paint tubes and other colorful supplies because I freaking love colors. With the ones I have now, the main difference is how vibrant they can be. But clean water and good paper help a lot with that, so it's ok.

What do you mean, handmade by me? Did you create it by mixing other blues? Also, will you please tell us the reason why you chose one brand over another, e.g. Aureolin by Holbein over Aureolin by W & N? Is it for light fastness? A slight difference in hue? Value for money? It goes for other colours with the same name as well. Your insight would be much appreciated. (AND what an ingenious idea to use a thin tape to create squares! Having yellow blobs separately is also a brilliant idea. )

Hi Sachie, I write hand made by me on the ultramarine because I handmade that color from scratch. If you haven't seen related videos, I make my own watercolors. As for color choices, it's mostly value for money (holbeins are really cheap in Japan), but for aureolin specifically, I have the answer for you here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHqtkIJ-odCcfbs

if I wanted to cut this back to a 12 color palette... for urban sketching.. what would you recommend?
@OtoKano
@OtoKano 6 жыл бұрын
pesto12601 I can do one better and give you 11! Stick to the colors that I’ve labelled a, b, c, etc. There are 11 of them and it covers the whole color wheel nicely. You’ll also be able to neutralise all of them perfectly. It will then give you a space for a brown of your choice.

just for fun, I created my "perfect palette". The rules are: transparent, non-toxic, single pigment, highly lightfast. Several colors fit these standards in more than one brand, so I chose the brands I use most and I also chose to limit the number of color. PY 97 -primary yellow (Maimeriblu),PY 139-gamboge hue (MB),PY43-yellow ochre-QOR,PY 3-hansa yellow (Q), PY 129 -green gold (Q), PGr 7 -cupric green deep(MB), PB 15:3-phthalo blue (MB), PR101-Burnt sienna(Winsor & Newton), PBr7--burnt sienna(Q), PR101 Caput mortum (Sennelier), PR 179 maroon perylene(M Graham), PB29 ultramarine blue (W & N), PB 60 anthrquinone blue (M Gr.), PB 15:1 Berlin Blue (B), PO71-pyrrole orange(Q) PO 73-sennelier orange (S), PR255-pyrrole red light (Q), PR 254 sandal red (MB), PV19-rose lake (MB), Pr122 purple helios (S), PV15 mineral violet (Holbein), PV23 dioxazine purple (S).
