That's the problem with commander sets, placed with standard sets, there's not enough cards to make the deck really good. If they do this again they have to make planes last 2 or 3 sets and release the commander set with the last one. Well that's my opinion anyways.

Reflections of Littjara. A lot of the mutants in this deck are beasts, so you can pick that. It's a good way to get extra mutate triggers, and more "times this creature has mutated" count. That Migratory Greathorn? First the copy mutates onto something, getting you a land. Then the original comes in, and both the token and the original trigger for 2 more additional lands. It often triples the effect instead of just doubling!

Break the Bank! Upgraded my Otrimi deck into a pretty sweet one. Auspicious Starrix is definitely the golden pig as the best mutate payoff. Yeah protecting your mutate stack is great but the real best moment is flipping those cards off the top onto the battlefield into lands and then mutating again the same turn. Also beast whisperer is great since he triggers on cast as opposed to lots of Green’s ETB= Draw cards.

I built Otrimi as a TMNT deck. Mutate something small with Otrimi but with good ability, like Slippery Bogle or Gladecover Scout, Will-o'-the-Wisp, Troll Ascetic, Cold-Eyed Selkie, or even Glistener Elf and Blight Mamba for infect. The other plan is to gain as much value as possible by mutating a lot each turn, using mana doubler like Zendikar Resurgence or Heartbeat of Springs, flash card such as Leyline and Vivien WAR, or discount such as Pollywog Symbiote or Helm of Awakening. Protect each mutated creature with hexproof stuff like Slippery Bogbonder or Asceticism, Heroic Intervention, Veil of Summer, etc. And when all card have been mutated into Otrimi and it's host, I return them to hand, using Crystal Shard or the unexpected way.... Ninja, then immediately recast everything to get value (or better, mutate them in flash speed to the ninja I just summoned). Too much value, I tell you this. And in addition, the Sultai color is like so great with supporting the mutate mechanic, with long option for removal and protection, where you can sneak in with an unblockable hexproof Otrimi that can easily regenerate. The main win condition is either winning through Unblockable Commander Damage (since you can buff Otrimi using the mutate spider or any other support in green) or through infect (since turn 1 glistener infect into maybe t3/4 mutate Otrimi into him can potentially makes 7-8 poison already. So yeah, Teenage (the small host), Mutant (mutate), Ninja (ninja), Turtle (Protected) deck, lmao.

In my Otrimi, instead of the Hexproof/Indestructible/Regenerate creatures, I opted for creatures that can make token copies of themselves (like Scute Swarm for example) and creatures that I can activate to bounce in my hand (like Lantern Spirit). The bounces creatures acts like a protection and is also returning the mutate creature to my hand so I can recast them... ideally on a token copy of a mutated stack. The thing is that you have so few Mutate creature options and you end up drawing only a few in general. I found that the deck needs to have a good balance of mutate creatures an hosts (creature to mutate onto). So, having the option to bounce your stack of mutate is kind of a way to get more value from the mutate cards you draw. Also someone may consider creature with Heroic as mutate can activate the heroic ability.

I love Mutate as a mechanic, and would love to see it more often. If a new Ikoria set takes a while to come up, maybe we could could see it in Ravinica with the Simic Guild? Seems like a perfect fit to me.

Mutating can have different flavor. They could bring it in another setting for sure. Even in Innistrad, like to represent things transforming/mutating into monsters. Or even mutating Leonardo onto a turtle in a Teenage Mutan Ninja Turtle crossover hehe.

Hydras like creatures are also a really cool thing to mutate on as they start with X +1/+1 counters on them. A stonecoil serpent on turn 2 with 2-3 counters, you mutate Otrimi on it turn 3 and you got yourself a 8/8 or 9/9 commander ready to attack with trample, protection from multicolor and reach. Disgusting turn 3. The best is that later in the game it's still good, you just pump the hydra even more and get yourself a 10+/10+ creature with some extra effects.

Hey thank you for this decktec. I've been trying to play such a list that is quite similar. I think it might need more cards to protect the mutated creatures. Hexproof does protect from most removal but not from boardwipes, indestructible might protect from most boardwipes but not hexproof... all in all, some "bonus" card such as auras or equipements, like lightning greaves for instance, can enhance the creatures and make them more resistant. Also, cards that might "blink" the creatures might be interesting. For instance, if you remove a mutated creature from the game and it comes back later, I think all the mutate cards come back separately. That might be interesting to 1. protect your creatures and 2. create an army from a once single creature. As an addition, I included the fantomatic Tiger and fantomatic nantuko, who both start with some +1/+1 counters on them and have 0 base-toughness, and when they are dealt damage you prevent damage and remove a counter. When you mutate them, they are simply immune to damages. I doubt that they are better than what you included, but they are fun cards and good budget candidates to mutate. Cheers! :)

I use Brokkos as my mutate commander. Being able to dodge commander tax is soooo sweet. It's also great fun to turn Psychatog, Consuming Abberation or Managorger Hydra into a 6/6 and your commander.

Got this precon deck, took a bunch out for a Zaxara X matters deck and combined ot with alot of mutate. Worls fantastic and definetly a threat that your opponents doesn't see coming (mutate on the 10/10 hydra with a trample creature and most of them are unstoppable)

I run a mutate deck focused around clones, because mechanically a clone of a mutated creature gains all of the abilities. So cards like Mirror Sigil Sergeant, and Mist Syndicate Naga are beautiful, or using Progenitor Mimic on Selkie or the Myr.

I do the same. But, must say sometimes it gets hard tracking what abilities a token has when you have more than one token representing different stack of mutate. I use pen and paper and dice (as tokens) where I put a 1 on the dice and note what are the abilities of the token (dice).

What would the lands look like for this? I imagine you could do all sorts of stuff, but would you personally recommend any multicolors or anything of the sort? Also, only 30 cards were listed. Even if one were to utilize 42 land cards, that leaves 28 open slots. What are we supposed to fill them with?

I know some of the complicated rules for mutate, but i have a few questions about mutate for commander. 1) you mutate your commander on a non token creature. your opponent destroys it and you decide to put it back in the commander zone. Does the creature it was mutated on to also got to the command zone, or does it go to the graveyard? 2) you mutate your commander on a non token creature. Your opponent path to exiles it and you decide to put it back in the command zone. Does the creature it mutated on to also go to the command zone, or does it go to its respective zone? 3) you mutate your commander on a non token creature. Your opponent plays leadership vacuum and sends it back into the command zone. Because the creatures it mutated on to is considered "one," those creatures also get sent to the command and zone. What happens if a card enters your command zone that isn't your commander? Are you able to cast those cards, do you have to pay commander tax for them as well?

1) The creature goes into the graveyard. Only commanders go in command zone. Also, in fact your commander go into the graveyard and since it changed zone you get to choose if you keep it in the grave or if you send it in the command zone. But you don't have that choice for the non-commander creature which stays in the grave. 2) Same answer as in 1) except you switch grave for exile. 3) As I read Leadership Vaccuum on Gatherer, this card does not target your mutated creature. It is refering to your commander. So my bet is that you would only send your commander card into the command zone. However, i'm not sure what would happen to the stack of mutated cards (but pretty sure it does not go in command zone and 100% sure you can't pay commander tax for cards that are not your commander even if some way it would be possible that they end up in the command zone). Honestly, this one is a tricky question and to be sure I would research or ask it on a forum or else if I was you.

The way that the stack would work, unlike the other scenarios, you don't have a choice whether you can put the non commander creatures in your graveyard, hand, or exile. It wouldn't have anywhere else to go. Remember, the moment you mutate your commander on to a creature, they are considered "one." If you're unable to cast other cards from the command zone, other than your commander of course, then they're probably stuck in a place where you can't get them back or re-cast them. Like a second exile pile. lol

when you put all your eggs in one basket, like you do with Voltron decks like this, you want insurence, this is why you want "Silent arbiter" which says "no more than one creature can attack each combat. No more than one creature can block each combat", then you just need a creature with menace to mutaste on to and its unblockable.

I love the mechanic, but Otrimi just didn’t jive no matter how hard I tried. His recursion ability either was never actually useful or he himself would be removed so many times it wasn’t worth recasting him. Turned the deck into a Brokkos deck to help at least ease the cost of recasting my commander. Otrimi is one of those decks that will be a LOT better when there’s more support for the core mechanic. Until then, Brokkos, orrrrr the Surgeon General Commander, haha.

Yes. I tried to find a ruling reference for you but i didn't found it. However 100% sure that I read that it still applies. Somehow, it is like the River Boa card refer to the name of the card on the top (kind of like a replacement effect).

Great video! My personal experience playing Otrimi has been that it'll go the distance, but it's pretty repetitive. The play pattern is very linear and it wore thin quickly, even compared to other Voltron-style decks I've built. Something to consider before spending money building it.

I have this deck but running infect and love it have a 6/6 trample flying infect turn 3 or 4, my question is the mutate cards with X time that’s mean X time the creature mutate on that turn or all the mutate card have that creature?

X times that creatures has mutated disregarding whatever turns. So in short, for X you just count the number of mutate creatures you have on top or below the original host (creature that was first muated onto). Keep in mind that if you clone or make a token copy of a mutated creature it does not borrow the "how many times this creature mutated) so it is like the copy has X being 0, unles you mutate onto it afterward.

I've had great success combining mutate with infect creatures. One particularly explosive turn 1 resulted in killing an opponent in one swing on turn 2.
