I am an American and when I lived in Los Angeles, I became friends with a Burmese man. He made me a meal once - I admit I embarrassed myself at how much I ate. I've never tasted anything like that meal before or since, and would dearly love to have been at the table shown in this video, as well. This was very well-done. Thank you for giving such a clear explanation on why Burmese food hasn't broken through to the West like most all of the other countries in the same region. Very well-done; thanks again.

I am from an Indian state(Manipur) bordering Myanmar and I have tried some of their dishes and i can say that Burmese foods are exactly my type, very flavourful and more vegetable based. And I always make sure I bring back home some packaged Burmese foods specially the ingredients for la phet tho.

One thing we didn't have time to get to in this video is the Burmese vegan community in Bangkok. There are a small handful of Burmese vegan places/delivery outlets, mostly from the regions bordering India. Awesome stuff.

They're the Kuki-Chin tribes. They're struggling to make their own identity by bringing many sub-tribe under main umbrella and form a new country.

Watching from Australia. This brought a tear to my eye as a first generation Burmese- Australian. I just made a batch of Mohinga which I shared with my friends two days ago as I too wish that Burmese cuisine should gain the recognition it deserves. As a kid growing up in Myanmar and having moved to the States, I always wondered what stopped Myanmar and Burmese cuisine from breaking through like Vietnamese, Thai, Indian and many other southern and south east asian cuisines have in the West. I felt that the focus on savory over sweet would have translated really well to western pallets and this video does an amazing job detailing why Burma effectively fell off the map

It’s because not many people know Burmese people or culture or food. There’s not a lot of Burmese abroad to help make the country known. Vietnam had a war and many refugees and immigrants migrated to America, Canada etc and they focused on crafting their cuisines and given that there’s millions of Vietnamese communities abroad it grew in popularity over decades. Thailand on its own was a favorite travel destination and people love traveling there and spread the cuisine around by word of month. Then many Thai who moved abroad opened up Thai restaurants and people found that they could get yummy Thai food locally. India too lots of them globally and popularize it’s cuisines.

I can't even describe how much I'm proud of these foods. Like Chef GooGoo said, I also really want those three recipes to be famous all over the world. We wouldnt make it if our cuisine were not that great. Second point is hospitality, burmese ppl dont smile and have zero to none service mind. Third, the cleanliness, even from burmese restaurant in the east village of manhattan to the local squat down si kyat down in latha most of the food in myanmar were being prepared in such a not hygienic conditions and almost alway served cold, not because it meant to serve that way but you guys dont even care to heat it up. You know why i know all of this I used to live in yangon and travelled across the country for a few years i know how often Burmeses eat and love thai food so dont pretend like your food didnt make it just because others try harder than you. Thats pathetic. Be proud of urself and next time be a good representation of ur own country. Oh btw most of the well known burmese cuisine were heavily influence by yunnan chinese, thai, and indian for example ong noh khaosoi the word khao means rice in thai and khao soi means noodle so make no mistake about that. Plus u might already know that shan ppl are closely related to thai ppl as they are tai yai ppl. I really appreciate how myanmar workers help us grow economically and i hope myanamr get back to normal asap.

I’m just an average American living in a culturally diverse city, and I am grateful that it has afforded me the opportunity to experience a wide range of cuisines and cultures. Fermented tea leaf salad is pretty well known here, and it’s incredibly addictive and delicious. You don’t always have to travel to every corner of the world to experience new foods, but you do need to be open minded and willing to try unfamiliar foods and flavors.

Such a beautiful video that I watched today. As a Burmese, I do also have same opinion like Ma Phyu or Guu Guu. I love to promote Burmese Foods as they are diverse and unique. We have different kinds of food for different meals as burmese people eat different food for different meals. I mean the food that we eat for each meal is different. For example, in the morning, we have variety of breakfast food such as Monhinga, sticky rice, fried rice and some Indian foods and tea but for lunch, we mostly eat rice and variety of curries. Dinner is also different based on each person's preference. I hope every people have a chance to try the real taste of Myanmar soon.

A great video to introduce Burmese cuisine to those who are not familiar with. Burmese cuisine has increasingly gain popularity in the US over the last 10 to 15 years, particularly the mohinga fish chowder with rice noodles paired with the ‘bothee kyaw’ and ‘kyethun kyaw’ opo gourd and sliced onion tempura fritters, and the laphet thoke fermented green tea leaf salad. My wife is from Myanmar and I have visited the country four times, and from my wife have learned to cook some Burmese dishes, such as the Burmese curries which were influenced by the Indian bhuna curries. I like the content and am glad to see someone interested in Myanmar food. In Myanmar, fermented Chinese cabbage is meant for Warm Tofu which is a common side dish in most Shan food. Moke Hnin Ngar normally eats with roasted chili powder, lime juice, and coriander.

Almost 15 years ago the first place I lived on my own was Gaithersburg, Maryland. There was a burmese restaurant there and I very clearly remember the pickled tea leaf salad. I ate it as often as I could which to be fair wasn't often because I was broke. I don't think I've seen a burmese restaurant in the US since but I have always wanted to learn more about it.

Burmese and Thai-yai Khoasoi version is a different from Thai version my friend a lot of people believed that this Thai food was created while got the influenced from the "Ho" people from chinese since the ancient time, in the past Thai people called this food "Kuay-teaw-Ho" which means noodle "Ho" style but nowadays Thai people called "Khaosoi"(wikipedia).

@@OTRontheroad Daly City & Union City, CA has a large Burmese community. Burmese restaurants are scattered all over the state but hard to find the authentic ethnic dishes. I usually had to cook for myself. Los Angeles has some good restaurants too. It would absolutely be wonderful if we can have a Little-Myanmar in the SF Bay Area. We shall see! And thank you for responding and also for genuinely caring about our culture and food. You’re really awesome.

Tofu nway is Shan people’s delicacy and everyday breakfast. Everyone from Shan state has their own little corner stall for tofu nway and noodles. Tofu nway is originally from yunan province and brought it by Dai people to shan state. Till now most of the stalls in northern shan state still making it the same way like the original region , still using dry green peas ,while the rest of the country uses chickpeas.

Oh a small correction; Dai people are also Shan people. Shan people call themselves Tai and Dai is a chinese corruption of the word.

You also have to try Ar Pu Shr Pu which is Rakhine state dish from Myanmar and it is my all time favourite! The taste is spicy and hot as its name you can add lime if you want it to be sour

I love your video. This video is awesome and informative about Burmese Food in Bangkok. You should try other curries apart from Burmese, Shan Noodles and salads. Some might sound like Chinese or Indian curries but hey these are Burmese styles. The taste is different.

Pretty good, quick documentary of burmese cuisine. As a burmese living in the states i had an opportunity to visit this jewel of a country before the recent junta take over. What you showed was just the tip of the ice burg there is alot more hidden dishes that the outside world doesnt know of. To sum it all up, Myannar is the brasil of south east asia. A melting pot. With all the different cultures surrounding the country.

Some historians believe that "Khao Swe" at 13:06 is actually the original form of Thai Khao Soi. Judging from the look, the taste, and the somewhat similar name,I think this might hold some truth. Maybe you should dig into this in the future?

well we believe that coconut noodle (ohn noh khao swe) is the original form because what does Khao Soi means in thailand? For us, Khao swe means noodle, ohn noh means coconut milk, a noodle dish made with coconut milk, the name is just what the dish embodies. If Khao soi means sth in thai, well idk but as far as i know Khao soi has no actual meaning while Khao Swe means noodle for us. Thats why i have the impression that its the reverse of what u have said, but then again, burma is in the middle of countries with famous cuisine, ppl will tend to know more and know early about those dishes rather than ours so it would seems like they would have more authencity. but food is food so i love eating both anyway

Kouk swe is Myanmar word,Thailand doesn't even have meaning to soi or swe.kouk swe is just the process name in Burmese.

I'm not Burmese, just a guy hailing from city of Johor Bahru ( Malaysia) across neighbouring Singapore... Would have love to visit Yangon a couple of years ago... but then we knew what events happened since then..... There's a place in Singapore.... known as Peninsular Plaza ( dubbed Little Myanmar ) ..where there are many shops, restaurants and most businesses run by people from Myanmar..... I have tried the food before.... Mohinga, and as a foodie... I have to admit.... Food from Myanmar or Cambodia... which i have tried as well.. A little bit under the radar....Thanks for creating this vlog..... Glad I came across this .... Keep up the good work mate!!
