Hey Reece. Today is a very special day for us, transit nerds in india. Today the first train set of RRTS was rolled out of alstom factory in Gujarat, india and handed over to NCRTC. The best part is that around 83% of the components are sourced locally. The civil construction of the priority corridor was completed about a week ago and currently track laying, electrification and signalling works are going on at full swing. Along with finishing work on the stations. The MD of NCRTC said that they are well ahead of schedule to start operations on this 17 km priority corridor before march 2023.

Totally agree. Think of tourists trying to explore Ottawa from Toronto or Montreal. They arrive with luggage in the middle of nowhere and have to get soaked or covered in snow just to reach "Tremblay" station. The tourists' first impression of Ottawa might not be that good. How I wish the intercity train brought people to a downtown central station.

Fun fact their used to be a downtown central station. It is now the temporary Senate building. It right across from Chateau Laurier and beside Rideau centre. The tracks leading to it were demolished and replaced by the 417.

@@Kishanth.J Yeah I know, what a shame they couldn't have kept the tracks and just put the highway over top. I believe the tracks used to be where Nicholas street is now. One thing you didn't mention, the location. It's in the middle of no where. I know this was mainly about the O-train station, but when you arrive by via literally the only thing in walking distance is the O-train, and the warehouses and box stores in Overbrook. I used to walk from Lee's to the via in school, the walking trail was nice but with any luggage it was not reasonable. They need to add a tunnel or enclosed connection between the two stations, and they need to redevelop South Overbrook (I'd like to see rail on the SE transitway that extends through Tremblay and under the highway to Overbrook). It's like if Union Station in Toronto were the industrial area around Pearson. Also, I hope that Bell phone accepts presto.

Transit in Ottawa is looking so good after nearly 15 years of stagnation. But, given how frigid Ottawa winters are, and with thunderstorm winds and downpours a common occurrence, I could never understand why the larger Ottawa transit stations are so open. There is a money issue of course, but how many people won't take transit simply from not wanting to freeze or get soaked waiting for the bus or train (which was quite long at least during the pre-LRT days)? Just as an example of what the experience can be like, I remember quite a few times standing out on the edge of the experimental farm in January waiting for the 85. The wind would rip across the open fields, causing the -20 or less temperature feel like -35. Not fun from someone coming from the much milder east coast!

Ottawa city council went cheap on the station designs. It's why there's no covered walkway to the LRT from the train station, why all the above ground stations are open. It doesn't work in a city where the temperature ranges from -30C in the winter to +30C in the summer. As for bike parking, that would be an extra cost to accommodate people who don't live in the suburbs, and the suburbs have a greater say on council.

Ottawa will gladly sacrifice the comfort and convenience of its transit customers to prevent its disadvantaged population from being able to use it for shelter from the elements. Also isn't shy to shave off a bit of capital costs despite the increased operating costs to maintain an exposed platform.
@RMTransit
@RMTransit 2 жыл бұрын
I really don't agree that it was a cost issue, the stations were clearly not cheap. It just seems like a massive design oversight, designing for a climate we wish we had versus the one we did. A solid canopy need not be super expensive.
@mlmielke
@mlmielke 2 жыл бұрын
@@RMTransit It is a cost issue ... reports even indicate that it is, much related to P3 constrained costs especially moreso after the Rideau Street sinkhole affected resourcing with the risk transfer. That is even though stations are higher cost in a build, the costs are still constrained to not include additional features. Once you get into how a P3 design works.... you understand the limits that exist from what can in fact be included in a fixed budget.

About the LCD next arrival screens, transitway stations such as Terry Fox and I believe Lincoln Fields which have fully enclosed buildings (oh also malls like Rideau (has Line 1 Station) and Bayshore) have much higher quality screens, as they're inside. Re: the station name, it was originally called "Train" in the Transitway days, but once they converted it to rail, I guess the name became quite a bit more confusing, so they changed it to Tremblay. Part of the problem with having an indistinct intercity station name ("Ottawa Station", "Montreal Central Station") is that they don't work well as an transit station name. Union Station is better, names like Grand Central or Penn, better yet.

Which downtown station? The rail connection isn't bad tbh, (except having to go outside), after 1-3 hours on a via train you jump over to the Otrain for 5 stops. I would like to see Overbrook and the area around the station redeveloped though to partly offset your point. But, TBH, there isn't that much "Downtown" in ottawa, its a lot of commercial and government buildings that sit empty all night. Anyone staying overnight, even for downtown business, probably needs to head somewhere else first.

The lack of covered connections is because originally that parking lot between the two stations was supposed to have some sort of development their and a connection would have been built with it. According to old TOD plans many of Ottawa’s LRT station were supposed to see more development around it. (Lebreton, Tunney’s, Hurdman, Trembley, Cyrivile, Blair). Until Moodie MSF is connected, there will still be concerns about that increasing fleet count at Belfast MSF, which seemed to contribute to the missed maintenance leading to that near 2 month shutdown following the high mileage trains' lack of due inspections. The unecessary exposure to inclement weather in public (and commercial) projects is a rampant design problem in Canada, and it first became really obvious to me in 2017 when Edmonton started releasing artistic renderings of it's transit expansion at the time. We were in the coldest snowiest part of the year when they released a set of artistic renders (or when I got around to viewing them), and I poured over these things for quite awhile. Of course, they all looked really nice, printed on paper, considering every single image of the project was rendered exclusively to show a beautiful summer day with unusually light traffic. Not a single rendering gave us a sense of what this thing would be like to use during the season we were currently experiencing... And ETS kinda already sucks a lot in winter, with it's many unsheltered bus stops and open-platform train stations. I think this problem goes much deeper than just the season chosen for the artwork; I think it reveals that a lot of the designers and architects are in just not really thinking about all season use, including even rainy summer days. This becomes further apparent when you see many key design features that will be undoubtably buried under snow for six month of the year, and a complete absence of any kind of snow/winter features (thermal sidewalks, enclosed shelters, snow pile drainage, prevailing wind blockades, extended awnings, or enclosed pedway/tunnel infrastructure, etc.). If we're really going improve our transit in Canada and encourage ridership, I think we really need to focus on making it comfortable and convenient to use all year long. If we don't, people will still continue to chose driving, with it's comfortable underground parking or convenient opportunities to park close to the front doors of an establishment.
@neolithictransitrevolution427
@neolithictransitrevolution427 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure on Edmonton, but I think another commenter got it right when they said Ottawa's open stations aren't an example of not thinking about all season use, they are an active choice to make the stations uncomfortable year round. With high frequency, riders only have to put up with it for a few minutes. Homeless people who might try to sleep in the station, on the other hand, are now just as stuck in the rain and cold as in the station as in the street. In Ottawa I did see homless people sleeping in the heated Transitway bus stops, which Transit pice would drive around and clear out, so I do think the choice was made to deter them with hostile architecture. Not that I agree with these design choices, but it is true that homeless people in stations can make riders uncomfortable.

Hello. I am not sure if you visited Ottawa before the LRT system but I wanted to comment on two things you mentioned. When the bus transistway existed before the LRT.. Trembley was called "train" and was located in the center of the cicular roads so the entrance was litterely right accross from the exit of the VIa station. This meant no walking outside (unsheltered - you where outside) and not walking as far as you have to now. I have no idea why they didn't build the LRT station where the bus station was. Makes no sense to me because it was a better location. But I'm sure there was a reason. Also being called "train" made it more clear it was connected to the via station. Maybe they thaught since the LRT is technically a train that renaming it to Trembley made more sense. To be honest alot of design Choices in the LRT make no sense. Most noteably the fact the train stations are so greatly designed but their bus parts are almost all terrible like their where an afterthaught. Like the designer(s) going.. "wow we designed a great train station" then "oh S**T we also need it to connect to bus.. ok.. a few random shelters in a line with no heat and hardly enough shelter or places to sit will do". The blair station where you have to go up.. over a bridge and back down to get in or out is beyond stupid. I avoid blair whenever possible.. and if my bus will be a while I take a different bus part way into the older south transitway system so I can sit and / or get out of the sun or cold weather. They had to build walkways behind at least two bus station because they where so full people where walking up the road to get their bus.
@toddoddity3976
@toddoddity3976 2 жыл бұрын
A few items to mention... The bus connections at Blair & Tunney's are not built super well because they are temporary. Both will only be minor transfer points after the the extensions open in a couple of years. As for "Train Station", it was relocated as the Transitway was too curved on both sides of the previous station, and the platforms were not long enough. Once straightened, even if in the middle of the loop, the new station would be just as far away (look at satellite views to see how far the track is now from the old station location) so they put it where they did to remove the road crossing. I agree with others though, that the overhead canopy should be extended over the rest of the walkway. As for the name... The discussion went something like this "we can't have people saying you take the train to train." So then they picked from a list of less descriptive names, because they thought people would be too confused at "take the train to train." Not the best logic there... But whatever. lol

Was struck by how suburban and sterile and cold looking the station and rail lines looked-no people, exposure to the cold weather and low density, no feeling you are in a city much less a capital.

It’s still too cold out for people to be standing around! Plus the landscaping for the line still needs touching up. Tremblay station is a vast improvement over the former connection from the old busway. I agree though that the Via station approach has always been rather barren. It’s as if little thought or expense was put into it aside from making it easy to circle around and taxi drop off.

To be fair, we do try to film when it isn't busy, but the relocated Ottawa station def isn't in an "urban" area!

The city is very much suburban, but there are pockets of higher density around certain stations and plans around others (it isn't always there right away in the build). There are always more peak and less busy times at stations and on the line too; keep in mind that 1 train out of ~500 a day doesn't represent the busyness of the line on the other of the ~500 trips (I have been on both fuller and emptier trains). And a lot of the element factors are because it's procured via P3, which tends to go less on the design side to conserve costs especially due to risk transfer.

It is suburban and sterile. The Greber plan to redesign Ottawa in the 1950s moved all the trains out to the sterile suburbs so the downtown tracks could be rebuilt as urban freeways. Ottawa had been developed around rail interchange and lumber and had large quantities of industrial wasteland in its central core. It's (almost) all gone now with the only evidence left being a couple of former rail bridges no longer used for that purpose and the old Union Station building now housing the Senate of Canada.

@@RMTransit although I will admit one failure of the announcement made me laugh hysterically. The message played very late, as the doors to the train were opening, and the entire message played over 3 or so seconds as a high pitched super fast chipmunk style message.

The name Tremblay was a choice of former Mayor Watson who insisted on it for obscure reasons. The open concept and lack of roof to protect from the elements was also a choice of former Mayor Watson who wanted to save money, he did not really believe in this system only did it because it was politically convenient.

Why were Ottawa’s centrally-located beautiful old stations abandoned for passenger travel?
@angrytogepi277

From the wiki page for Ottawa station: "The present Ottawa station east of downtown and the Rideau River is the outcome of an urban renewal plan by the French urban planner Jacques Greber. The plan was commissioned by Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King, who sought a re-imagining of the city following World War II. Among the proposals in Greber's city plan was the relocation of railway tracks outside of the downtown core. At that time, many trains were still pulled by steam locomotives which brought their noise and soot to the downtown Union Station and rail yard. In addition, the trains running through Ottawa were not grade separated, meaning there were perhaps 100 level crossings impeding car and pedestrian traffic. Greber sought to clean up the downtown by relocating rail traffic outside of the city center. This would require the construction of a new train station." TLDR: Air pollution & lack of grade separation.

It's okay but overall, you get the impression that the stations were built on the cheap, especially the underground ones downtown.
@mlmielke

Stations are among the most expensive part of the build, especially underground... the cheap view is because it is a P3 that had to manage resourcing after the Rideau Street sinkhole, with a fixed-price contract.

While I get that maybe they should rename the O-Train station, it's called Tremblay because both it and the Train Station are literally located on Tremblay Rd. Since the old Transitway station was also called Tremblay, they probably just wanted to keep it something that locals associated with more.

The old transit way station was called "Train", not Tremblay. They changed it for the LRT line because they felt having a station on an LRT line called Train would be confusing.

@@danc1513 And given half of VIA passengers get off at Fallowfield, which may have a future Line 1 connection too.... yes, it can be confusing. Which is the "Train" station when there are three? The main VIA station would be better of changing its name too.
@finalkross
@finalkross 2 жыл бұрын
@@danc1513 I stand corrected. I remember the old name "Train" but honestly thought they made that change to Tremblay in the 90s when the Transitway was going through its massive expansion of stops. Since there used to be a few buses that would travel around Coventry, Belfast, and Tremblay that serviced that area and St. Laurent Shopping Centre, I really thought that change was done a long time ago.

The pedestrian bridge was sadly absent for the longest time: getting to the Ottawa baseball stadium from the transitway station required lengthy detours to navigate around the terrain and highway access ramps. It was so unpleasant that walking (or catching a local bus) from the St. Laurent transitway station instead was a viable alternative to consider. This didn't do the triple-A baseball team any favours as the available parking space at the stadium continually got reduced. I know the Via station is a designated historic place, and you could do a lot worse than having a large, spacious room with lots of natural light, but to me it's like an airport hangar. Very utilitarian appearance; not much to see or do while waiting.

It's a tram-train (Line 1). So, yes, it's a train that is modelled after a tram. It's meant to mix up a little on branches, of which none currently exist on Line 1. And Line 2 is a regional train modelled after a train, but running more urban-styled service. While Line 1 is light rail capacities now... the capacity capability is light metro running mixed urban-suburban style branched services, somewhat similar to S-Bahn.
