It's pronounced "By-Ward", named after Colonel John By, and the original name of the city was "Bytown". And, Rideau is pronounced "re-doe". --A native Ottawan.

I'm an outsider, and I find Ottawa very boring (even the fun stuff becomes repetitively boring), lonely (anti-social, not welcoming that much), too cold for too long, too governmental, etc.. At the sametime, I am thankful to God for being accepted, cared, and sheltered for here, due to the economic crisis, war, joblessness, very high prices, lack of insurance over somethings, etc. back home that my parents had to endure. My brother got arrested for defending himself against a bunch of thieves with knives in the Ottawa city area. The cops allowed the thieves to escape and accused my brother of the crimes, even though there was evidence that he was stabbed three or more times. The justice system here sucks. The police correctional jail place in Innes is much worse than the one's in America. They treat the criminals and parents of the victims with abuse verbally, physically, etc. in many ways. Harrasment, rudeness, etc. At the court, the Crown attorney only cares about the public and gives cares little about the falsely accused criminal. He even ignored the past crime scene and defended the thieves. He was against my brother ans mother and myself. The lawyer(s) only care about money, they don't care about if you get out or not. That just goes to show you how corrupt the criminal justice system is in Ottawa.

The biggest thing about Ottawa I would say is to go during an event. The best part about Ottawa is that the city is great for everyday life for the locals, but as a result there isn't the constant hustle and bustle of Montreal or Toronto. The financial district shuts down at night so make sure to go when there's something to do and not just a random time of the year - and even get out to the Glebe, Little Italy or Chinatown they have great food and shops

Very familiar with this city. I can't visualize large parts of its layout in my head, like with some cities, but my mom grew up there, I have a lot of family on my mother's side still there, and my sister went to university there, so I've been there a lot. This is a good summary. I especially agree about the winters, which are notoriously brutal. It's simultaneously cold, even by Canadian standards, snowy, and there's always a risk of freezing rain. There are nice byproducts of these winters, such as the Canal, but you MUST check the weather forecast in Ottawa all the time, especially if you plan on driving. Bus transportation in Ottawa is not bad, but there is little light rail and no subway, so you may need to drive depending on your circumstances. Despite that, I love Ottawa. Its museums are excellent, as you pointed out, it has a gorgeous downtown with beautifully preserved 19th century gothic architecture, it's safe, and it's actually not as boring as people think. Your mentioning of its natural parts, I should also include its integration into the Trans-Canada Trail system, is also a real plus. *Just as a side note, it's generally pronounced "By-ward Market" not "Bay-ward Market." Though I saw a comment where you now know. I know this was a throwback. No biggie. :)

Haha! I’ve been working in Ottawa’s nightlife for 15 years. We have an amazing underground... you just have to look for it. It’s not for the tourists so if you don’t know someone here, you won’t find the graffiti, the film festivals, the concerts, the really weird stuff like drag shows, pop up dinner parties in weird locations, the rap battles, etc... Forget winter in Ottawa though. I travel in the winter 😅

Love these videos . The negatives are interesting- nightlife- fair enough before COVID, you needed to know where to go, it’s exist but doesn’t jump out at you like Toronto or Montreal. In comparison to Toronto, Ottawa is very clean downtown, and improving. It is a government town, can’t disagree, but doesn’t mean it’s expensive - don’t go to tourist traps (Byward Market) and you’ll find the prices drop fast and quality is good. Ottawa has extreme cold (-40 Celsius at worst in winter) and extreme heat (40 at worst in summer). So dress warm in winter, but pack light for summer. The Rideau Canal is worlds largest skating rink and very fun to skate into the downtown of a capital city. Ottawa’s proximity to nature is probably underrated, yes Gatineau Park is very close but lots of great hiking only about an hour away from downtown on the Ontario side a well. We like to think we are friendly too :)

I live in Montreal and tourist to Ottawa a couple times per year for work and friends-visiting. This video is pretty accurate (it's named Byward market Mark! After a Colonel By! Ahhh!), though night life has gotten a lot better in the last ten years. Gatineau is really where people stay up late and hang out, is the thing you maybe didn't emphasize. Hang out at a house party if you can; locals used to say that the best thing about Ottawa is the Friday train to Montreal, but that's a bit over-stated now.

Don't come in Winter as it is bloody cold. Skating on the Rideau Canal isn't fun when the temperature is -20 Celsius in the open with the awful wind. Hotel is expensive for sure. Great video, and very accurate, however, as a local, it is not the "bayward" market, it is the byward market, as Ottawa was originally Bytown. The best parts of the city are on the outskirts, along the river lengths.

Hi! I like your videos. May I correct something in the description of this one? Ottawa is a city located in Ontario. On the other side of the river is another city located in Quebec, called Gatineau. They sure are neighbor cities but should not be considered the same culturally, politically, etc. Regards, JRB

The Byward market is not sketchy aside from the homeless shelter where people sell drugs out in the open. Only Rideau Street is sketchy at night at this one particular McDonald's which always has problems. There is a video of a massive brawl that took place there in front of the cashiers and a dude pulls out a baby racoon mid-video. There's been many times where I've been trapped on Rideau street because the buses only kick back in around 5AM. Don't talk to anyone and don't try and bum a cigarette and you should be fine. Other than that, there are a few night clubs in the downtown area, bars and restaurants, and a strip club if one were so inclined. If that gets boring, you can always try and find a night club or two directly across the bridge to Hull, Gatineau.

Uh. A lot of the down town core clears up in the evening because most of the employees live in the suburbs or small towns outside of the core. Not because they’re from other cities or provinces. Ottawa is geographically huge.

Best things: biking; kayaking on the Rideau River or Lac Phillip in Gatineau park; cross-country skiing in the winter; live music at the Rainbow, Live on Elgin, Irene’s, or the Black Sheep in nearby Wakefield; restaurants in the ByWard market, Little Italy, Wellington West or Hull; Jazz festival, Bluesfest, and Folkfest; Film festivals, especially with the Canadian Film Institute, the National Art Gallery, day trips to Perth, Almonte, Westport, Merrickville, Aylmer; walking tours, especially the People’s history walking tours and Indigenous Walks tours; the Fringe festival and local theatre, especially at the GCTC and the National Arts Centre. Worst things: conservative/closed mindedness, reserved people, prices, public transit, lacks joie de vivre.

@@spaceman081447 honestly Montreal is the most bilingual city and you could technically only speak English and live there and be fine. Though learning some basic French is a good idea but a formality / polite thing to do. I usualy go every other month to see family and friends and although French is my first language, I have friends from there who speak English when we are out and it's fine.

You always give such nice reviews of Canada so I'd hate to say anything negative on your channel. Let's just look at this as some guidance towards local pronunciations. I get it, it's not always easy, especially in a multilingual region like Ottawa. Ottawa is not pronounced Attawa. It's more like Awe-da-wa, we don't even say the T's which doesn't help, right up there with Toronto = Ta-ra-na ByWard Markey. Not sure where you're getting the extra letters but try saying Buy-word Market Rideau stumps everyone who isn't from here. More like Re-dough (sadly it simply means curtains in French which was a description of our waterway) Gatineau - Try Gat-in-no Simply trying to make you sound more like a local than a tourist, please don't get upset :)

This video seems to be limited to the downtown core, Lowertown (Byward Market), and the Museum of Civilization, which is not part of Ottawa. You've missed so many great spots, such as the canal down to Dow's Lake, Hog's Back Falls, Rideau Falls, Lansdowne, and so much more. There is a nightlife but not so much in the core, as it's mostly government offices and retail buildings. If you're travelling with kids, you're probably not going to find too much for them at night (plus, you're probably putting them to bed so didn't have an opportunity to explore the nightlife?). I've lived most of my life in Ottawa and I've always found great night spots. And I've never felt unsafe here.
