De '43 Choralvorspiele für Orgel zum Gebrauch im Gottesdienste Opus 52' verscheen vijf jaar na dood van Dienel.

OTTO DIENEL,
zoon van cantor en organist Karl Wilhelm Dienel krijgt orgelles van zijn vader.
Na het behalen van het diplome aan het Görlitzer Gymnasium schrijft hij zich in voor een lerarenopleiding aan het lerarenseminar in Bunzlau.
1863-1867 Koninklijk Instituut voor Kerkmuziek.
1864 Berlijnse Academie voor de Kunsten; Dienel krijgt les van onder meer August Wilhelm Bach (1796-1869), Johann Gottlob Schneider (1769-1864), Albert Loeschhorn (1819-1905).
Naast zijn studie verdient Dienel bij als zang- en orgelleraar.
1865 Organist St. Bartholomew's Church in Berlin-Friedrichshain; daarna van de Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche in Berlin-Kreuzberg.
1869 zilveren medaille van Royal Academy of Arts.
1869- Organist Marienkirche in Berlin-Mitte volgt August Wilhelm Bach op.
1871 & 1885 Concerten en studiereis te Londen.
1874 Italië
1877-1898 Muziekleraar Berlijnse seminarie voor leraren op stadsscholen en individuele lessen.
Zijn bekendste student: Thomas Cantor Karl Straube.
1881 Muziekdirecteur Marienkirche.
Het Wagner-orgel in de Marienkirche is onder zijn leiding (helaas) veranderd en herbouwd door de orgelbouwer Schlag & Söhne. Dienel introduceert openbare, gratis orgelconcerten mmv van zangers en instrumentalisten.
Dienel wordt gezien als kenner van de muziek van J.S. Bach en een uitstekend improvisator.
Dienel publiceert over orgels en orgelbouw en ontwikkeling van orgeltechnologie.
1895 -1902 Voorzitter Berlijnse organistenvereniging.
Dienel zet zich in voor bescherming tegen ontslagen pensioenrechten voor organisten. 1898 Erelid van de American Guild of Organists

Organ compositions make up the majority of his c. 600 working comprehensive oeuvre.

Dienel publishes on organs and organ building and the development of organ technology
