It's not really a fair question because if he wanted to be a GM he would have been. But he was only interested in playing beautiful games. He could have gone to tournaments and played to get the point, but he passed on a lot of opportunities and when he sat down it was for his art.

@@zaayd That's not my analysis, other people have remarked that he left easy draws to go for wins and played as aggressively against strong opponents as he did against weaker ones. GM Ben Feingold also said that he was very strong and could have been a GM.
