This title is genious. Like - it is not about mating Wesley with good combination in the midgame - it is about sending a message - if you just sacrifice a pawn with not a good reason against me - I'll stifle down you with that pawn)

He played this not like a chess engine, but like a Go engine: play to maximize your chances of winning, even if by the slimmest of margins. Wesley gave him a pawn, and Magnus gave him nothing in return, not even a time advantage.

3:35 - Wesley blundered the pawn on the rook file.... Queen takes pawn. Then queen takes the other pawn :o ... is this a trap or did everyone just miss it?
@lordcezar4657
@lordcezar4657 Жыл бұрын
It's not a trap. It just sends black into a losing position after Bg5 attacking a knight that can only go backward; no one wants a retarded knight. If black doesn't respond to this threat then white would take that knight with very good compensation (as kingside castle is no longer safe). IF he moves his queen to defend the knight, black would capture the knight immediately. If he decides to keep his king safe by capturing with his queen, white has a strong move: Knight captures b5. Revealing and simultaneously attacking a bishop (a7) which is now pinned to the a-file rook. The rook cannot move, the bishop cannot move, it is now up to white to spare the hanging bishop - but he is ruthless. Black is miles away from castling. The queen comes back to b6, but she must know that all hope has been lost now. The evaluation bar swings upwards and says the best move for black is to castle kingside. "Castle kingside??? I want to save my bishop". The white queen watching wouldn't be left out of the drama now, would she? Queen to b1. Any knight move would mean that the two beauties would stare at each other, with one smiling mischievously. Black castles and white played the in-between move c captures d4. What looks like a useless pawn capture would mean, after the dust settles, that black has no passed pawn to use to his advantage. But black see's this instead as glimmer of hope - d6. perhaps black knows the bishop is still trapped but can't help but clutch at straws. { Qxa5 |Bg5 Qb6 | Bxf6 Qxf6 | Nxb5 Qb6 | Qb1 O-O | cxd4 d6 | Nxa7 Qxb1 | Rfxb1 }
@lordcezar4657
@lordcezar4657 Жыл бұрын
why I said its not a trap is that it's easy for a grandmaster to see the potential relative pin in a few moves. The bishop to g5 move to attack the knight meant that the three heavy pieces defend each other at the back rank.

@@osgubben exactly. It’s not like he “missed” this move. If he is 100% sure he can win a simplified endgame he will choose that route rather than a more complicated tactical approach that he’s 90% sure about. He doesn’t play variations he thinks could be good, he plays the ones he knows are winning and that’s why he’s WC and the best chess player ever. Why take even a small chance to win the game in 5 moves when you are 100% sure you can win It 20?
