Emory was a lone wolf without support. In order to become a GM it requires resources to play in tournaments to get GM norms. And to place high in these tournaments many draws would be needed. The reality of playing chess at GM levels is that few games are won by checkmate in spectacular manner. And these tournaments are not all played in the USA and hotels and airfare are expensive. Technically Emory wasn’t a GM but he was an OG in my book.

I do honestly find Emory Tate's chess to be a lot more original than most and I appreciate it. No chess expert, so pardon my lack of examples, but it kind of reminds me a bit of Fisher. Not nearly as good as Fisher, but they both seem to share a love for originality that most great chess players lack, especially in the modern era.

This is absolutely ridiculous that emory tate gets the attention today because of his rich sons. When I was a kid competing in the eastern open in the late 90s I was a fan of his play style and nobody really cared about his gameplay. I told a local chess coach that I was a fan of his games and he thought that was amusing. He was rarely mentioned in chess articles. I remember one round he asked to borrow my pieces because his opponent and he did not bring them. Not a big deal since everyone has some. Anyways I asked him to sign my rollout board later and he did. Strange that today I see youtube videos about him. There are several masters, FM, and IM. So many don't become GMs. Nobody cared in the 90s. Unless you're a successful book writer, or a popular streamer (today) chess is not really a career and you don't need to be a GM for those.
@neemnoa303
@neemnoa303 Жыл бұрын
I might be misunderstanding you but is it a problem that he became famous because of his sons? It is true that a lot of obscure IMs and GMs have great matches but not a lot of people care. Why is it a problem that his sons show a light on him? Isn't that what all fathers would want? Sons that are proud of him? I think it is lovely.
@Joseph-C
@Joseph-C Жыл бұрын
@@neemnoa303I am also unsure of the point he was trying to make here... He demonstrated that Tate was a known personality in chess before his sons, while saying that he's only famous because of his sons..? Genuinely a very odd comment.

I’m new to chess and I want to play more “artistically” and freestyle my approaches. I like how he didn’t use computers or anything. Do you have suggestions of how a beginner (just started this week) could learn how to freestyle? I don’t want to follow robotic frameworks, go for very situational traps, and etc. I want to play simple and clean usually with e4 and claiming the center.

Agree with @OttoMeister, I started a few months ago and play freestyle. I steer clear of players who try to play theory by using Sicilian Defence as Black and English Opening as White. It's not E4 like you prefer, but they make the game uneven and the other player usually doesn't have theory for those openings, so they have to rely on their skill. As I'm approaching 1100 the games are getting trickier, but doing puzzles and familiarity with my positions has really helped. Also watch pro games! You learn how the midgame and endgame should be played and you kinda figure what your doing wrong with pawns and other pieces

This video has so many things that are not true, Emory did read chess books we read books while on tour, I played with him during his time in the Airforce. What made him a great player was he would play games with the board empty (no pieces on the board) He played with passion and a style most players had difficultly adjusting to, he always said when you get guys out of the book lines they will struggle. It was his attitude and lack of falling in line with the chess elite that kept him from becoming a GM and that is a shame to the game of chess.

I watched Tate lose it when his prepared line against IM Irina Krush went awry. That was back in the day at the last stand of the Manhattan CC.

Of course not. Emory Tate was barely IM strength.

@shahjahonsaidmurodov2086He is dead, so how am I meant to beat him? I have beaten IMs before, so I could probably have beaten him in a game or two. Even if I couldn't beat him in a single game, it doesn't change the fact that Emory Tate was a player that barely achieved the IM title. Why should a GM title be given to a player that struggled to get his International master title? The Grandmaster title has set standards, and they should not be lowered for anyone.

I didn't watch the video. Short answer to the question: He didn't obtain the norms to become a GM, as simple as that. Chess spoke for itself.

It's not uncommon for IMs to beat GMs. It's far from guaranteed a GM will beat an IM every time. You guys seem to think it's rare. He simply wasn't good enough.

Because that would lead to an exchange of Queens that he might not want at this point.
