The great Respighi!!!!

Well, death eventually stopped him. Sadly, Respighi died way too young. Such a loss!

perfettamente d'accordo.

Many beautiful and captivating moments here but as a whole this seems a rambling and unconvincing work. You have to admire Respighi's swagger, flair and bravado though, even when he seemingly has no idea of where to go next. Apart from the full-blooded and exciting piano writing (kudos to the late Tozer), IMO the best part here is the slow middle section, a thing of great and sincere beauty.

This piece and the painting reminds me of the crime of sin, the soul contrite and dammed... but through much work its eternal love - God forgives and the soul returns triumphant back into its place of origin and departure. Superb!!

Like many a fan & not heard? Reasons often not heard mean unpopular, & can see why? Near 18 mins of neo- Bach dotted récit pastiche which wanders endlessly in stop & start quasi cadenza minor with dim 7th arpeggios done to death without settlement to a tune or new tempo is hard to sit through. Once we do move to an animated toccata type section we soon hear chords in the strings exactly the same as in The Pines of Rome. 3rd move. This is a rather "stuck in on a rainy day with nothing else to do" composition by him, otherwise it would have been recorded more & circulated & programmed more therefore we'd know it?
@j.vonhogen96502 жыл бұрын
I agree with most of what you are saying. The first half of the piece is indeed quite hard to sit through. The slow middle part is probably the best part of the piece, while the final part seems to lack direction, consistency and thematic material, despite the energetic pace, dynamic contrasts, and ambitious piano part. Respighi's orchestration is of course great as always, which isn't surprising, since he was a pupil of the great Rimsky-Korsakov. The Toccata certainly isn't one of Respighi's masterpieces, but it's still an interesting work i.m.h.o., because of the pretty middle part and the optimistic ending of the piece.

there's a lot of Scriabin in this piece...wonderful though...
