Probably the best college RB ever. This guy was simply amazing. He could run over anyone with little effort. Glad to see someone had the sense to post this, I never forgot about this guy but many have. Too bad.

I get chills just watching this guy, because the football world was deprived of three talented individuals, Marcus Dupree (Still remember him off left tackle against OSU and there wasn't a defender in the 30 yard view), Bo Jackson we only saw a glimpse of this superstar and really did excel in two sports, and Billy Sims...we never got to see them really play...Damn It!!!

really sad how injuries can derail a player's career. could've the best college runner ever if healthy and had he stayed at OU for 4 yrs. i remembered watching him played on tv at age 8. still the best ever for only 14 or 15 games ever. a legend that won't be forgotten.

I live down the road from the town where Marcus was from, and every time I go by I see the huge house he built and lost. It reminds me of the wealth he squandered, and what he could have been.

Saw the Marcus Dupree 30/30 documentary last night for the first time On Australian cable TV - Foxtel. Incredible to watch that black&white footage of Dupree at Philadelphia HS. Super athlete. Incredibly sad that he did not have a decent male figurehead in his life who could have guided him the right way. He never should have left OU and coach Switzer and his staff should have done more to persuade him to return. You just don't let a kid of that talent walk away without a fight.

Marcus Dupree was a classic case of a huge talent thrown in too early for his own good. Amazing talent, had he better people around him, COULD have been an all time great. That's football could have....Should have.....Damn.....At least he showed some heart and came back to the NFL. God bless.

Marcus was amazing!.. finest runner i have ever seen .. Coach Switzer admits his mistakes with Marcus..like everyone who knew him and his college choice, i wonder what kind of career he could of had with a coach who loved him and really took him under their wing.. Switzer as said in the documentary wanted his seniors respected and didnt want to offend them with a freshman runner taking a senior spot... how that happened is a mystery of our time

Yeah, Herschel was another legend just a couple of years earlier. What else is crazy is that Herschel, Bo, and Marcus were about the same size as defensive ends back in those days. Imagine a 260lb running back nowadays with sub 4.3 speed!! That's what it was like trying to tackle those freaks!

He was "all that"! I lived one town over from him and saw him in HS. Damn shame... Certainly, "the best that never was!" We got cheated from enjoyment in watching "awesome football" but the biggest loss was to Marcus himself, and it came mostly from within. Those that know him know what that means, and those that don't will want to argue. 'Nuff said!"

If you are born with a tremendous talent, are you obligated to utilize that talent to the fullest? Many people who wish they had a talent, can't understand how people with that talent can squander it away. So many ways to look at this story, probably what makes it so fascinating. All I know is that when I watch the Dupree highlights it's like nothing I've ever seen!

The crazy thing is Marcus Dupree and Bo Jackson were from the same recruiting class. Both were around 230lbs with world class speed.

damn marcus dupree really had a talent for really knowing how to hit the tiny gaps really good. He must of had some really good calves, you can totally tell that he find his way very easily.

well 233 in this video. coach switzer wanted him at 228 and considered him overweight at 240; he stated that was the reason OU lost to Texas in the 1983 fiesta bowl. marcus won MVP of the game and set several records despite having to leave the game for multiple different injuries (missing half the game). but i hear you his frame was insane. around 1986 when he wasnt playing football he weighed near 300 lbs

@Liface We get a lot of NFL on Aussie cable TV. I'm a big fan of the Green Bay Packers and really enjoyed watching the Super Bowl live. I've read a fantastic biography of Vince Lombardi, ("When Pride Still Mattered") hence my interest in the Packers. My daughter follows the New York Jets.

@millerja34: He basically only played 2/3 of his freshman year. He got less than 150 carries. And take a look at his stats from that time - they're insane for a freshman. He had an incredible Fiesta Bowl (239 yards on 17 carries) even though he had multiple injuries and wasn't in for a good part of the game. And the rest of his career was injury-riddled. Adrian Peterson wouldn't look as impressive as you think if you only had 2/3 of his first season to look at.

The only guy that compared with Dupree physically was Bo Jackson. Bo was 220lbs in college and ran a sub 4.2. Both were maybe the two best physical specimens to ever live. Crazy that they were part of the same recruiting class.

I know I'm from Chicago but when he bounced off people he looked like Walter Payton. It's sad what he went troght to just make the pro's. He got scammed, he had injuries, but he still gave an effort during the games. I just watch 30 for 30 on ESPN and the documentary was called "The Best There Never Was". I was touched when I watched it, I've never seen or heard a story like his. I wished he could of had his own dicsions and opinions but he wasn't able to because of all the media around him. M.D

Bo Jackson before the actual Bo Jackson. Dude had great speed, size(even tho a lil out of shape), and cut speed....Just like Adrian Peterson lol but I don't think Peterson was as fast as this dude, he had a SERIOUS, FLUID stride. I think his highlights were amazing I wish he would've took football/school serious and kept playing. Well, looks like Barry is still the undisputed #1 college RB in NCAA history.

What ever happened to those big backs who are great athletes with speed like Hershel Walker, Bo Jackson, and Marcus Allen? Now, a lot of these colleges focus on the spread offense and don't utilize the run game anymore. Sigh, those were the good old days.

I just saw the 30/30 documentary about him too and i gotta admit, i wept for him inside......I see the Adrian Peterson, MJD and Chris Johnson of this world and they would probably make zillions amount of dollars but they're not good enough to tie this dude's laces......Such a very very sad story. but like YGTSTV said, it was all down to not having a male figurehead to show him the right path......

@sportsal11 Watching the 30 for 30, DuPree blames alot of what happened on the fact that he was a little immature, surronded himself w/ the wrong people, etc. I think the 30 for 30 about him should be shown to all high school football players.

I felt that when he realized that his family betrayed him, he quit. Barry liked underdogs not top-dog talent. Fred Akers was a great man but Marcus was crippled by a lack of father figure was dependent on his family when it came to business and college football is business. He probably should have gone to Grambling where Eddie Robinson was the coach and a father figure. But his family was poor and they were using him as an out.

This man brought whites and blacks together. In some ways, he is as important as Rosa Parks and MLK. A true legend. I especially love how he ran for his brother who had a walking disability. He just wanted to make his family proud. He did.

@millerja34 Dupree had more natural talent than AD, Billy Sims, Joe Washington, etc. He was 230+ lbs and ran a 9.5 100 in highschool. In the event someone did get their hands on him, they couldn't bring him down. He didn't like going to practice or class and he was riddled with injuries before he ever got to the USFL.

@JeffPippen93 first of all brandon jacobs is much bigger than dupree by like 40 pounds and he does at the nfl combine he ran 4.56 judging by that he most likely got faster.Marcus dupree is a great back but he could only run he couldnt catch the ball. thats why he was cut by the rams
