As a Javanese I thank you Cambodia for preserving and developing the Panji story from Java to make your own version. Hope the stories to be kept alive in Java and Cambodia as the testimony that our kingdoms in the past had a good relationship.

bocah angon Inao was Siamese poem written in the reign of King Boromakote , during Ayuthaya period, AD 1732-1758. Two daughter princesses of the King wrote Inao according to the story their Javanese nanny told them. After the fall of Ayuthaya, this manuscript lost but the Thai still remembered and impressed this romance story and it became a legend among them. King Rama II of Jakkri Dynasty rewrote Inao poem script play. Inao poem script written by King Rama II is a very melodic literature and very well known among the Thai. Inao play is Thai literature mandatory subject for Thai student in secondary school. King Rama II wrote in the preface of the manuscript that Inao was a story from Java. This is the reference to honor Indonesia. It is a good manner to honor the cultural owner of other country. The Thai know Indonesia and Jawa culture from Inao Play Manuscript. Receiving culture from other country is not a shame or stolen because it is learning among human. The culture owners alway proud and please when other nation receive their own culture. Thai Lakorn play Inao in full story or some chapter, or dance in some part. We usually use Thai costume for Inao play and sometime use Java costume for today dance. Khmer received Inao from Thai Royal Court. Khmer princes or princess was brought up in Thai Royal Court as a hostage because Khmer was Thai vessel state for 430 years since the reign of King Boromraja the second, Ayuthaya period (AD 1432) up to the reign of King Rama the fifth of Jakkri Dynasty, Ratanakosin period. Nak Ong Daung was a Khmer hostage prince who stayed inThai Royal Court at Bangkok for 24 years. King Rama the forth held coronation for him in Bangkok for being the King of Cambodia name Pra Harirak Ram Maha Issaratibodi. King RaMa IV also gave King Harirak the Thai Royal Regalia so that he will be the real King accepted from Hindu belief. King Harirak was very impressed Thai Khon and Thai Lakorn . He brought Thai teachers to teach Thai Khon and Thai Lakorn to Khmer Royal Court when he became king. At the beginning, Khon and Lakorn in Khmer Royal Court used Thai Lyrics and translate the lyrics into Khmer language after that. One of Thai Princess, Mom Chao Chaweeward, the exile cousin of King Rama V, fled from Bangkok to stay at Khmer Royal Court with her own Lakorn troupe. She acquainted King Harirak since he stayed in Thai Royal Court. She is one of Thai Lakorn teacher who taught and trained Thai Lakorn to Khmer girls. This why Khmer Royal Regalia, Khon and Lakorn costume, music instruments, song, lyrics, gestures, performance and stories are similar to Thai, but difference from ancient murals at Angkor Wat which was original Khmer culture.

Enao in Java is called Raden Inu Kertapati, while Bosseba (I suspect derived from Puspa) in Java is called Dewi Sekartaji (thorny flower, probably refer to rose), or sometimes also called Chandra Kirana (shining moon). Both puspa and sekar means flower in Javanese. The beautiful couple are believed to be the incarnation of Kamajaya (Kamadev) and Kamaratih (Rati), Hindu god and goddess of love. Fascinating and beautiful Cambodian rendition of Panji tales, I still can feel Javanese sensibilities and elegance though...

@Oudomist 8 жыл бұрын
+muhammad abdul hamid I think the story here is basically the same, only with just little alterations to adapt to the royal ballet. For example, Her Royal Highness Princess Buppha Devi added the third scene, where kalaing's brother tells the princes to go to battle...etc, to add on to the timing and so on

The transfer is possible either directly between the ancient Java or indirectly through Siam (Thailand) , or the combination of both, as culture and literature were interchanged between kingdoms in the South East Asia region. For Siam, the story possibly arrived during the later years of Ayutthaya Kingdom from a Javanese woman serving in the palace who told the story to 2 princesses, who then wrote 2 separated versions: Dalang and Enau. Enau then served as the basis for later composition of several plays that later became the masterpiece of Thai literature, while still retains Javanese vocabulary and culture. It was a popular story for 'Lakorn Nai' or the Inner Palace play, only performed in the royal court by female performers since early days of Chakri dynasty. The indirect transfer to Cambodia could be the combining of existing of the same story in Cambodia with elements from Siamese version. (Similar to how Ramayana is performed in Indonesia, Thailand, and Cambodia with similar main story and character but different in terms of dress and some side story , as Ramayana arrived alongside Hinduism)

Ancient Indonesian received Dongson drum influence from Vietnam more than 2000 years ago: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pejeng_drum The relief at Borobudur Temple (8th century) showed a group of musicians: www.pinterest.com/pin/24769866670626961/ www.dreamstime.com/stock-photo-bas-relief-carving-musicians-borobudur-intricate-performing-indonesia-s-th-century-buddhist-temple-near-yogyakarta-image80707906 The story was originally imported from Java so it makes sense if Cambodian musicians combine the Javanese/Balinese gamelan with Cambodian music.

After Cambodia was occupied by Siam for 431 years and became a French colony for 90 years, Khmer did not created their own culture anymore because Cambodia was influence by Siam culture. Simon de la Loubere, (1688), the French ambassador to Ayuthaya during the reign of King Narai, wrote the report "The Kingdom of Siam" in every aspect concerning Siam society then. He described "There are three Siamese entertainments, Khon, Rabam and Lakorn...." with the detail. He mentioned other two foreign entertainments he met in Ayuthaya, Chinese Opera and entertainment from Laos, but no Khmer. Thai King of Jakkri Dynasty, King Rama I wrote Ramakien (Ramayana), and King Rama II rewrote scrip play "Inao" which was lost during fall of Ayuthaya. This literature is very well known among the Thai because Thai student study "Ramakein" and "Inao" in secondary school. Inao used to played in Siam Royal Court call Lakon Nai.

@xoxo lovexoxo Pol Pot killed almost wise Khmers and left the silly and low educated Khmer like you. Every nation in Southeast Asia have their own Ramayana epic for playing Khon. King Rama I wrote Ramayana in Thai according to the poet of Valmiki. Khmer khon play according to Ramayana script written by King Rama I and learnt Khon from the Thai Royal Court. Khmer never have Ramayana script of their own, but if you argue you have it, tell me the name Khmer who wrote Khmer Ramayana version. If you study your history you will understand what I told you, but it up to your brain capacity.
