Very important: “Vous” isn’t only use for the plural of “tu/you”. It is a must to use “vous” instead of “tu” when talking to an unfamiliar person, an older person, your boss etc... ‘tu” is very familiar so anyone that isn’t your friends, family, or colleague, you should use “vous” when talking to them otherwise it is considered very rude and way too familiar. A person will tell you if you can address them with the familiar “tu”. This is a very important rule in France. Wise words from a French friend living in the US.

I'm a Frisian/Dutch woman. I speak Frisian, Dutch, Afrikan, German and English. Frisian, Dutch and Afrikan are very simmilar so that was easy. German has a lot of the same words but it was a bit harder. We are tought English at a young age and every movie has dutch subtitles. so that was doable. 11 days ago I started to learn French. I hour a day. 'Now I can read french and I can pronounce french words. Unfortunately I still can't form a lot of good french sentences yet. But I think I'm going to fast at the moment lol. I am 52, not particulary smart so If I can do it anyone can. This course is pretty good! With this one you have all the basics. I know because I've seen a few of them lately...

Languages don’t come easy for me. In grade school we were taught French for 30 minutes a day three times per week. I never spoke it again until I started taking French classes at night as an adult, mostly for recreational travel. I wasn’t that good at it. Later I was travelling often in Africa so I learned a little Swahili, enough to humour the ladies selling their fruits, vegetables and bread rolls in the various markets and villages in East Africa. Not even close to conversational but sure had fun with it while travelling. Still later in life I started learning Spanish. I went a lot further with Spanish taking classes at work and in evening classes. Twice I lived with a family and attended Spanish school, once in Spain and once in Mexico. I actually got somewhat comfortable with basic conversations, no where near fluency but better than the average tourist. I felt pretty good about my learnings until two things happened to bring me crashing back to earth. On one trip to France I answered the waiter perfectly … in Spanish! Another time in Spain I answered in French! Quite humorous to me and I still have fun with it while on vacation. I’m in my mid sixties now and watching many French language videos to prepare for a trip next spring, hopefully Covid will be under control by then.

This is a good 'refresher' if you already know some french, its well organised and highly relevant. It demonstrates the use in context so more advanced users can hear normal talking speed usage and there are extra bits (words) to learn in the context setting sections. I need to find something like this in Spanish now! Thx.

@IronFreee3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's the same "on". Y is a replacement for the destination, kinda like "there".
@paranoidrodent3 жыл бұрын
Yep. On is very common both as a casual "we" and "one" (as in "one shouldn't do that", not the number) in spoken and casually written French. Nous sounds a bit formal sometimes but it can vary by dialect and context.

Oh and another thing. Can you pick out the differences of "hello". It may sound dumb but I have trouble speaking the accent and it gets awkard 😂. So cou Cou is a more friendly way of approaching and bonjour is like saying hello to a stranger or less familiar with? It would help an awful lot when greating people :')
@abimaelmilard54624 жыл бұрын
Just have to remember that “ Coucou” is for people that you’re close to. It’s not really an informal greeting, because you can say coucou to your friends like you can say it to your boss or colleagues. You say coucou when you have a relationship with the person or to someone that you know or share something with. You say “Bonjour” to people that you’re not either close to or don’t know.
