In our last travel Mexico video, we shared all the reasons why we are so thankful we made the decision to move to Mexico. Life in this beautiful country is nothing short of amazing and so many good things have happened in the year we've spent in Mexico.
However, this crazy life decision we made isn't without its regrets. Looking at this whole experience, there are 15 notable regrets we have about moving to Mexico-and they're probably NOT what you think. We'll be talking about things like learning Spanish, traveling in Mexico quickly, and letting certain ideas get under our skin!

The sweetness and honesty of your videos make them compelling. If I may, so much of this brings back memories. I bought a home in Mexico in 1995, then moved here lock stock and barrel in 1997. It was a bit daunting, to be sure, but I can honestly say that I have never regretted it for even one depressed moment. Like you, my only regret is not having done it sooner. I waited until my only child was through college, married, fully launched. I should have moved to Mexico when she was still in Jr. High, and perhaps she would have escaped so much of the vicious bullying she endured in American schools. (There is bullying in Mexican schools, certainly, but I am very close friends with many families with school children and I do not believe the bullying is nearly as cruel and as out of control here as in the USA.) Anyway, I have never looked back, and it's now been 21 years and 4 months. I have a going business here, which enables me to not only support myself, but also employ Mexicans. I became a full Mexican citizen ( not just permanent resident) in 2008, and when I travel to Europe to visit family, I travel with my Mexican passport. My social life, to the extent I have one, is almost 100% with Mexicans. They are so inclusive and non-judgemental by nature. The fluency will come, but as you so rightly point out, it is a long process requiring patience, discipline, and real dedication. So many of the foreigners I meet through my business have been retired and living here for up to 20 years or more, and still speak only a few words of Spanish. So often, after a few initial months of sporadic effort, they just give up. "It's too hard." Of course, it's their loss. They will never know how much of Mexico, and the endearing subtleties of this lovely culture, they are missing.

What a great comment. You are awesome, Robert! Sounds like you have really been living life to the fullest and embracing Mexico in every way. Curious - how did you get citizenship in Mexico? We're considering going that route because my great-grandparents are both full Mexican, therefore the citizenship could pass down to me...somehow. I can totally sympathize with what your child went through in the US. I was bullied so much in high school that my mom had to move me to another one. I imagine it's even worse nowadays with social media and everything. What is your business here in Mexico? I love that you've not only become engrained into the culture and lifestyle, but are also giving back by employing some people too. That's really such a big thing Mexico is about it the core - giving more than you get and looking out for others so everyone can enjoy life. Knowing the language is undoubtedly a huge part of it.

I managed a building cleaning service in the US for five years. All 64 employees were illegitimate mexicans. Some have been in US 25 or more years and could not speak a word of English. It is very hard and most just give up. Same in Mexico. English and Spanish are the Number one and two Spoken languages around the world. Children should be required to learn them both in elementary school. It would make for a better world. Having lived in Mexico over 2 years, Most are willing to take the time to try and understand what you are saying and then try to make you understand the Spanish equivalent.

Anytime I get a link from someone about something bad happening in Mexico I send them a link about something happening in the states.... and I have A LOT to pick from. Every country has their own crap to deal with. We should also be paying attention to all of the great things a place has to offer instead of just focusing on the negative side.

The key is to downsize in the US, you’ll have extra money to buy in Mexico and go back and forward as you wish. Best of both worlds, trust me... you want to buy as inexpensive as possible in the US to keep your taxes low.

I think that one of the difficulties in learning Spanish is that you two are there together. I travel alone to Latin American countries, and it forces me to speak only Spanish. Even when my wife goes with me, we do it with the agreement that we both only speak Spanish. It feels tough, but it really helps in the end.

KUDOS for being truthful about how difficult it is to learn a language!!! All of the videos I watched talked about how "immersion" helps you pick it up in no time. The truth is that I've traveled to four countries that speak other languages, I studied all four languages ahead of time by bingeing Duolingo, and I couldn't remember a single thing when I got there! For some reason, I only remembered the word for "cat" in French (not helpful). When I got to Spain the next week, I found myself saying "bonjour" (and for some reason started saying "scuzi," which is Italian and not even a language I had studied or visited). In Morrocco, I finally remembered a few Spanish words, but by then I was in a city full of Arabic speakers. I came home with a renewed respect for foreigners who come to the U.S. speaking very little English!

That is how I fell in love with the Spanish language by listening to Love songs in Spanish. I also just spoke whatever words I knew to everyone. Now I speak quite fluently but just do it is the best way to learn.

Do you like tv and movies? I recommend anything by director Pedro Almodovar. Also if you don't mind how silly they are, it helps to get hooked on a good telenovela. El Clon (the original, from Brazil, that was dubbed in Spanish for the US market) was my obsession for almost a year, and it really helped train my ear for Latin American Spanish (Almodovar is from Spain).

We had some similar regrets. We did not study Spanish enough before moving here but we were also spending so much time selling our possessions plus our house, plus working full time, plus applying for temporary residency, so there wasn't much time left in the day to study :( phew glad all that stress is over with! It is super humbling to move abroad! So glad we all took the leap!

I really enjoyed this video as well as your 11 Reasons you like Mexico, good stuff. And you are sooo on point about people thinking immersion can magically simply the process of learning Spanish. Not gonna happen. And your comment about the negative stories and endless barrage of people telling you how dangerous Mexico is right on point. First of all, as general rule, if you're not looking for trouble in Mexico you'll be fine. Just use common sense as you would here. The people of Mexico are incredibly friendly and helpful. Second, people magically forget the US is a dangerous place too. The barrage of violence that takes place in the US on a daily basis is nothing to sneeze at. Anyway, great stuff as always.

We're happy to hear our points are right on. :) On the Spanish thing - I wonder if we would have set ourselves up for more success if we DIDN'T believe the people saying immersion/being here would basically spoon feed us fluency to Spanish. At least we figured it out quickly, but still. Expectations ≠ reality. Also, I totally agree with you on the danger in Mexico vs. US. Personally, I feel safer in Mexico than I did in the US. For example, on the way to work in Phoenix, I used to see at least one accident, if not more. In Mexico, accidents are pretty rare because people actually pay attention. It's easy to lose touch with reality (whether that's about safety, health, happiness, etc.) when people are constantly telling you one thing and there's no basis for comparison...i.e. all the people who have never left the country. ~Maddie

I wish everyone could spend significant time outside of the matrix. I mean USA, lol. It's such an enlightening experience, being exposed to other cultures, different ways of life, opinions, etc. Being trapped in this box we call the USA is not good at all, it makes us poor global citizens. As for learning Spanish, the trend these days is to teach yourself. The problem is people have no direction on how to do that successfully and don't fully understand just how hard it is, how to stay motivated, the tenacity to be consistent and over come that fear and shyness you mentioned, how to resolve the challenges that pop up, and as you know, there are many. I'm self taught myself, and I can tell you it was a long, hard road to fluency. And I didn't have the luxury of 24x7 immersion which would have been helpful, lol. I'm really proud of you guys, you're making me want to just say F it and embark on my own journey.

We are starting to sell EVERYTHING we own and prepare to move to Mexico too. We have 3 boys 10,13, 16. We are starting to learn Spanish but we regret as well living most of our lives in Fl and not learning earlier!! We've been to Guatemala and it seems very similar in living and culture. We plan on come to spend a few weeks there and figure out where we'd like to live. We own land and live in the mountains of east TN but know it's not safe to live in the mountains in Mexico so that will be a change for us. Love this. As native speaker in Spanish who moved to states I have lost a lot of my native tongue, so when I was in Mexico I made sure I spoke as much as I could to refresh my Spanish. I realized being there how much I have lost but willing to learn 😃

10:23 I just checked the ADOT website for you. It says they only issue one plate, but they do issue two for personalized plates. So that might be your solution. I don't think getting a replacement plate will help you, because that would invalidate your current plate. If you are not going to be residing in AZ any time soon, and if you don't want to pay extra for personalized plates, you might want to consider moving your residency to South Dakota. Because SD issues two plate, registration is way cheaper there, and they make it really easy to become a SD resident, without actually living there.

I travel full-time, but in my RV. I drag my home base around with me wherever I go. As a hard-core introvert for whom interacting with people is a huge energy suck, it means everything to go home at the end of the day and sleep in my own bed surrounded by my familiar home. I wake up in the morning and make my tea in the same cup I use every and sit in my own chair. Sometimes when I open the window-shades it takes me a moment to remember exactly where I am. I find this the best of both worlds. Constantly changing views out the winds with new places to explore, but my personal home "nest" inside to retreat to at the end of the day.

You guys are too cute! I have struggled with a lot of the same things when I moved from Canada to Guatemala. My numbers don't match your points, but here are some thoughts. 1. Yes, learn more Spanish! Language osmosis isn't a thing. Ha ha! :D 2. Decluttering is so awesome and freeing! I actually loved getting rid of all my stuff. 3. I found out that my medication is 10 times more expensive in Guatemala than Canada. Shocker! I now go to Mexico for my meds. Simi's for the win! 4. Take negativity with a grain of salt. Guatemala is not known as the safest place! The negative news that I found online was a bit shocking, including scary warnings from the Embassy. Happily, Guatemala is a lovely country and very safe if you know where to live and how to be aware of your surroundings. 5. Things don't go as planned. Hell yeah. You have to learn to be flexible. 6. Know the laws and paperwork needed. So true! Seriously, do your homework! 7. Make a friend on the ground -- do this!! And then pay it back by being a friend to anyone else looking for help. A supportive expat and/or traveler community is vital to survival. 8. Relationships may not survive. Mine didn't. Travel, money, moving in together, culture shock -- all these things can destabilize your relationship. 9. Go for it NOW! This is the best "regret". Don't wait to follow your dreams. :D

So they can't find words to describe their feelings. Turn down your perfectionist level, use the perfect pillow and cuddly comfortable blanket for time out feelings of home (home is where you can comfortably rest your head.) In bed, in a book or a peaceful walk in nature or beach. Fit those into your year; how about week😉 with someone one special who helps you feel complete...

I enjoy trying to learn a new language and totally understand that I am not going to learn it right away. Thing is I still don't feel embarrassed on how I sound to my friends or family. The first thing I did while living in a French community was buy a book. It was great. It had pictures.(I did not have a computer) I found that a lot of languages have their own little cultural sounds and certain words. Depending on distance from others that speak the same base language. It's called culture,grows on it's own. I am trying to learn Spanish now as I was in Mexico once and am going again. I interacted with the locals and they corrected me which is a great help. If we can get rid of our pride that's the first step. Don't laugh at yourself. Try to be like a child. Look at the mouth of the person speaking when forming the words. I learned this from a child.. Thanks for your advice.

My wife and I at your age lived in Germany for 3yrs and enjoyed traveling doing the youth hostel thing. Learning the language was casual but it happened slowly. It seems your doing the same thing with mexico. That’s great and I enjoy your videos. Your priorities are travel and learning Spanish is second. When i come to mex (soon I hope)I plan on attending a immersion school and do nothing but learn. That will be my priority. But i notice every video i see on youtube re travel to Mexico, Columbia, Ecuador is that you are doing this together, as a team. Absolutely Amazing!!!! The Culture, architectural style is beautiful in this city and the food was amazing. My husband and our two children stayed in Queretaro for two weeks and everyday was amazing. Even the Airbnb was super affordable and nice. We have not been back since but after the pandemic passes we do intend to just visit again. We are in a place right now where relocating abroad is not ideal so just frequent visits I hope in the near future. Thanks for the question.

We all have that issue with language. It gives you such deep respect for ES speakers that immigrate to the US and just "pick up" EN. The first few (thousand) times you have to talk to a native speaker it scares the hell of you...what am I saying? Do I sound like a child? n idiot?? nope, just a gringo and that is fine. I find Mexican people so warm and helpful

Thank you, thank you, thank you guys, love your videos, I watch them for entertainment and to live vicariously through your experiences. We have traveled lots 23+ countries and Mexico is near or at the top of the list. We find Mexicans to be wonderfully accepting people, they seem to rise above all the bad press, keep working, loving family and life. In our mid 70s always feel safe there and have used their inexpensive convenient (international) bus systems to get to or between major cities. My advise is don't be ruled by fear learn a little Spanish and travel as soon as you can, meet your neighbors, you will like them. Thank again guys, keep truckin'.

Thanks for joining us on Patreon, Gary! You are awesome :) As for Guadalajara, we lived in the Colonia Americana neighborhood during almost our entire time in the city. It's not very close to parks, but it is a highly walkable area of the city with lots of great restaurants on Avenida Chapultepec. For moving around the city, a 15-20 minute Uber is usually between 40-60 pesos ($2-3 USD). You might also consider checking out Zapopan, especially by Bosque Colomos, a HUGE park in the city. It's a bit more pricy in those parts, but nothing crazy. You're also nearby a luxury mall called Plaza Andares and tons of restaurants. Hope this helps!

Guadalajara is one of the most expensives cities in México (along with Monterrey and México City). I was offered a job in there but I wanted to live in a really nice neighborhood but the prices were so high. So I declined. ¡Saludos desde Puebla!

​@@astrompowers3455 We actually found the prices there to be pretty average compared to cities across Mexico. Like a good meal at a nice restaurant was 60-110 pesos at our favorite spots. Alcoholic drinks were cheaper than average - a lot of places sold shots for 15-20 pesos. Massages were one thing that was more expensive than average (600 pesos/hr) as were lavanderias (we paid about 17 pesos/kg as compared to the Mexico average of about 14/kg). We paid 7,000 pesos a month for a 1bd/1bath place (including everything) just a few blocks from Chapultepec, one of the most desirable places in the city. And our subscribers from GDL told us that was expensive. There are some very expensive areas but we didn't need to be in one of them to live a really good life there.

But in Puebla I found (7 years ago) a 3 rooms appartment, 1 service room with bathroom, tv room, balcony, laundry room, living room, big kitchen, and many closets and I'm still payin 6mil pesos for the place! Is on Huexotitla, another pretty and hip zone here in Puebla near to el Centro and Angelopolis. So, maybe I'm just lucky!

I agree about learning Spanish. I was stationed for 2 years in southern Spain in the Navy in the early 1960's, and I had every opportunity to learn the language, but I never did learn to speak it much. I think Mexican Spanish is easier to understand than the language in Spain. Good video! I also visited Mexico for a total of 4 weeks during the 1980's, and enjoyed it. Lots of people from Canada and the U.S. living at Lake Chapala, below Guadalajara.

You are so right about having to study in order to learn Spanish. People always act like you will learn Spanish without working at it as long as you live in a country where Spanish is spoken as a majority language. I live in the US, but have a friend that only speaks Spanish. I am able to communicate with her because of my ability to speak limited Spanish, but I know people think I speak Spanish better than I do and they think it’s because I have a friend that speaks it. I thought I would just pick it up by being around my friend or always listening to Spanish pod casts and movies. Bottom line is if you are an adult trying to learn the language you will need passion, motivation and discipline. It’s really a lot of work, but worth it. Great videos guys.
