Turtles do something called brumation in the winter. During brumation, turtles slow down their metabolism and use their butts as a way to breathe underwater.. It's possible that Nestor will be waiting a very long time.

Apparently you've cleaned out the other pool as well. Did I miss a mention of it? Will there be floating plant treatment centers for it, also? I really love the pools. I'd love to know what kind of turtle Splurtle is!!! I used to have "red eared sliders", and they always ate their food IN the water. He may be just under the surface, with just his nostrils above like a snorkel, or if he hangs out deeper in the water, he can hold his breath a very long time while Nestor waits for him to surface for another breath. SUPER pond for a turtle.

You really should submerge biochar into your pool, which ill clean the water and then the biochar can be used as fertilizer, returning the carbon to the soil, while cleaning the water and making the pool more appealing.

Can you test the pool? I live in the US, and I have had swimming pools, fish ponds, and lived on lakes; your pool is a swimmable fish pond with steep sides and no fish. When you experienced the terrible algae bloom, I thought of two things: too much rain affecting the pH and too much compost-filled runoff from the grass and gardens next to it. No filter could overcome those two problems. Removing the algae manually was the first step, and the brown color doesn't make it unswimmable. Still, I would check the bacterial, amoeba, and parasite counts before swimming because of compost runoff. Because England's weather is cooler than the US in most areas, I doubt there is a problem, but tracking what's in the pool is helpful. One ongoing problem will be your inability to remove all the decaying matter falling into it daily. That makes your pool more like a lake, but it doesn't have the natural features of a lake that control the runoff. I would investigate a very gentle way to remove the debris on the bottom once or twice a year, being careful not to damage the liner. It contains the good bacteria the pool needs to live. I was not surprised that after cleaning the pool with a pressure sprayer and then allowing it to dry out, serious problems developed. In fact, I screamed "Nooooooo!" at my computer screen when you started the project. You will need to clean the pool every couple of years, but only with handbrushes. It will be tedious, but the liner contains the minerals and life you need to keep the pool in check, especially with natural filters. In the end, you might need some aeration, but there are several different types; bubblers work as well as a fountain. No matter what you do, your swimming pool is now a living, breathing entity; you are going to walk out and look into it and scream, "No!" for the rest of its life, and then, like a doctor, you will have to diagnose its problem and fix it. (To help the wildlife, like turtles and mice, get out of your pool, build a ramp; you don't want Mickey decaying in the debris at the bottom.)

Mapperton would be a fabulous place for supporting the preservation of rare draft horse breeds. Keeping even six would help stabilize the population of your choice. They would also attract visitors. Who could resist these gentle giants. Most are bred for docility and are surprisingly easy to handle.🐎
