I used to have to problem when I was hatching eggs. This year I forced myself not to open the incubator until the day after they should hatch. Making sure your humidity stays up. Every time you open the door you let the humidity out. That is what is drying the eggs. I know everyone wants to see, but you need to wait and give them time. I can't tell you how many turkey eggs I lost until I learned not to open. They have time because of the yolks. They can live off them for about 3 days. That is the only reason they can be shipped safely. 15 in the gene pool doesn't leave a lot of diversity. in them all. Like your idea on naming them.

Them having a low number is probably why they have so many issues. It's unfortunate but that's kinda the cost for trying to save them. (Not saying we should save them it's just harder because the pop got so low before trying to save them)

I’ve kept chickens my entire life and it’s so hard to watch some of these videos. It honestly makes me so sad, a lot of the time these deaths can be avoided. I feel like every video more of their birds die. It’s just wrong to me. (Later edit) I just remembered one of their videos they had a guinea chick that the mama hen had pecked to near death. The chicks skull was exposed and they just put it in a box to see if it could survive. It obviously didn’t and that hurt me so much because part of keeping chickens is you have to be able to take it out of its misery but they just let it suffer until it died. I don’t agree with that.

@@klaytonbowen5646 I both agree and disagree, some of the deaths could be avoided, but its hard to fix the problem if you don't know what the problem is or you don't know what to do about it. It is best to take them out of their missery if you think you can't save them. But at the same time if there is even the slightest possibility of them surviving its hard to give up and kill them to take them out of their missery when you think there still might be a way to save them.

Klayton Bowen I can barely to stand watching their videos anymore, everytime they post a hatching video I cringe. They have needless deaths every single batch they hatch out. And people tell them over and over again to stop doing these things and they just don’t care. Guess they wouldn’t get the cute hatching videos they like so much if they let them hatch out properly but goddamn this is cruel..

@@klaytonbowen5646 okay but also a part of having outdoor birds is death. You cant really be sad. Its a natural thing that happens commonly. And some deaths can be avoided some cant. With birds like chickens sometimes you never know what they will die from and they pass away so fast sometimes you have no reaction time by the time you catch on that something is wrong.

That's awesome, I'm glad everything worked out and you got 5 to hatch. The dark ones will be dusky or look like a fancy khaki Campbell. If they have yellow bellies, necks, or wing tips they will be white bibbed or tipped. If you want to try more hatching eggs, either now or next spring let me know. Perhaps of use in the future: the YT channel A Chick Called Albert dealt with a hatchling with balance (?) issues.. From my fuzzy memory: He wrapped/splinted the bird and set it in between two bolsters of foam. It improved and survived. HTH🦆❤️

Yeah. He fixated the duckling with a sock for 1 night inside of what looked like a container for fruits, such as strawberries. The next morning, he took the duckling out and it seemed to be doing just fine :)

We've been raising chickens for 20 years. For the past couple years we have been raising endangered breeds. There's a extra twinge of guilt when you lose little ones you're trying to rescue, so this video particularly struck a cord with me. But, as you said, it's how it is on a farm. I'm so sorry about the duckling you lost. I've honestly never seen respiratory distress like that in a duck. I've dealt with a few respiratory infections in chickens and even pigeons, but never in any of our ducks. They are usually pretty hardy, and unlike many other birds, they are pretty much immune to respiratory infections. At least, that has been my experience. I have no idea what could have caused such labored breathing that resulted in death so quickly. Congratulations on the surviving new babies though. They are adorable, and I hope they continue to thrive. I wish you luck with your future breeding plans for them (Also, just so you know, Hookbill ducks actually have three degrees of bill curvature: straight, moderately curved, and extreme curve. At this point, Captain Hook's bill may not get much more curved. To get the best fertility when breeding, it is usually recommended to breed moderate curve to moderate curve, and extreme curve to straight, never extreme to extreme). Good night, and God Bless You!

@@caitlyn3476 I guess that is a possibility. I've never had an issue with heat stroke in our ducks either so I wouldn't know for sure. As long as they have access to water and shade the ducks seem pretty effective at keeping themselves cool enough. I'm inclined to think it was an issue of failing to thrive due to problems caused by limited genetic diversity, though if that was the case, it's surprising that it made it that long. Chicks/ducklings who have poor vigor and fail to thrive usually show issues and pass away much sooner, so I'm not sure if that was the case either. It's hard to say for sure, especially without being there.

Just a suggestion if you are having humidity issues or membranes drying out perhaps spraying lightly with water can prevent that on hatching days. I had a similar issue with pigeon eggs (hatched naturally not incubated) old timers recommended I offer the parents a bath the day before they are due. If I cannot, then to spray the nest lightly with water. Since I started doing that I never had the issue again.

I know the pain of losing a farm animal. My brother and I decided to get a baby quail about a week or so ago. Yesterday I found her in her water dish, shivering. I took her out and placed a heat lamp over a small cage, and watched her for hours. The next morning, I woke up to find her stiff, dead. she was only 4-5 weeks old. R.I.P Cuddlebug, July 2020 - August 2020 :(

One of our chicks had this problem too so I dipped her beak in hot salty water and fed her a bit of medicine. Check if their bedding area is not dusty. I am also 12 maybe if you do a bit of research you might find out whether ur chick has respiratory disease

Finally, you helped these ducklings by cracking their shells!!!!! You should do that with all your hatchlings not just the hooked bill ducklings!! That’s why you’ve lost animals in the past because you don’t ever help them out. Reference: Brian Barcyzk at BHB reptiles always cut the eggs at a certain amount of days to help the snakes hatch and NOT die in the eggs which can happen often!!

it depends on the animal wich you are working with, if they will be pets there's no problem with helping them, but if it's a conservation project you don't help them because their offsprings in future generations will not be able to hatch on their own.

Normally you would not help birds to hatch. You could knick a blood vessel under the shell and the baby can bleed out. You could accidentally help too much and the baby could fall out of the egg before the yolk is absorbed all the way. Or the baby is genetically weak and could pass that weakness on to future generations if it survives long enough to do so. Critically endangered birds like hookbills are the exception because of how few of them there are but you still only want to go so far in helping them for the reasons stated above.

Unlike snakes, birds need to break out on their own. It helps develop their muscles. You can also rupture a blood vessel before it dries up.

I live in Australia and I hatched the most beautiful chicks I’ve ever seen and it was there first time standing on the fresh green grass. That afternoon I got home from school and in there small cage was the 4 little chicks died with blood everywhere. And guess what killed them??? A butcher bird. I was sooo sad. And the first chick that hatched I named Hope. She was beautiful and a little sweetheart. Make sure u have something over the top of the cage to avoid what happened to my chicks.

I'm so sorry about your chicks. That's so sad. I live in Australia too and I have seen those Butcher birds attack pretty much anything and everything that lives, breaths and moves. I mean they aren't that big, but I have seen them repeatedly swoop and attack Bush Turkeys that are adult and fully grown. They must be about 5 times bigger than Butcher birds! I also see them fly after and attack all sorts of other flying birds, bigger and smaller than them. Those poor chicks of yours wouldn't have stood a chance once a Butcher bird laid eyes on them and decided that they wanted to attack them. I've never seen a more aggressive bird! Especially considering that they constantly attack any human unlucky enough to be walking anywhere in the vicinity of their nest or territory! Again, I'm so sorry for your loss Ivy. 💜

Looks like its got what I've heard called a gimp leg i beleave u can use a dock to fix it but unfortunately it doesn't always work. I believe if u watch a chick named Albert they can show u how. I know they sorted out those issues but it csn be helpful for any that dont

It's kind of hard to find vets that work with birds. Most I know either deal with livestock, wildlife, or dogs/cats.

Because most vets dont treat birds like chickens and birds like ducks and chickens pass away quicker than you can find out whats wrong or treat them. Its a natural part of farming

I don’t want to assume but I’m wondering if they even called an vet and consulted about the duck?? Or separated and keeped an eye on it, if you have animal that has obvious problems you should either keep constant eye on it or check it more often than every hour!! Also people keep telling them about not opening the incubator too early... just really disappointed, feels like it’s now more about cool shots and views and not about the animals anymore...

@@janu4380 about the incubator. Mother ducks naturally leave there nest for 10 min or so, so in that time you can open the incubator.

Yes I just commented that baby ducks benefit from niacin. Helps with neurological issues 🙂

Genetic diversity will be a massive problem for these ducks in the long run. The initial 15 of them will be the ancestors of these guys, so potentially there could be up to 40 generations of inbreeding between them. Would you potentially add in a different species of duck to their group. So when they breed, you get really healthy half hookbilled ducks. Then those halves can be bred together with the other hookbills, which will ultimately help them massively in the long run

Yes, I've seen other Hookbill owners use other varieties of ducks to breed diversity into the ducks. We'll consider that if we need more diversity.

You are helping them out to soon you are causing the issue with them hatching the best thing you can do is leave the eggs alone in the incubator and do not open the incubator after you see piping. by breaking off shell you are causing them to dry out not helping them you are actually making it harder for them to hatch. Also a chick should never hatch with yoke still hanging out of their belly’s and at least 2 still had yoke hanging out. It’s also why they are having leg issues they just are not ready to get out of the egg and you are pulling them out. They will never start to hatch with yoke hanging out. You will have so much better success if you lock down the incubator 3-4 days before the hatch never opening it unless chicks have been in there for more than 24 hours. mostly when they is another egg hatching do not open the incubator most of the time helping an eggs is actually hurting it.

Not to mention that sense this is an endangered species you think they would take a little extra care of them.

But why would they pip if they weren't ready yet to hatch? Should've he waited for a day longer, and let the other 2 possibly die too? And one of the ducklings with leg issues hatched by itself, so that couldn't have been "because he ripped it out the egg too soon". If you think you know so much more about hatching eggs, why don't you do so then?

Sometimes you have to help chicks hatch. Its a part of hatching. Just like the people who think you shouldnt candle because your taking the eggs out and exposing them to air. I candle mine every 5 days and i have amazing hatch rates. Theyre fine as long as the humidity stays up in the incubator. They dont just die from taking them out.
