We've spent some time with the OM-1, the first camera from OM Digital Solutions. It gets a lot right, but there are a few changes we'd love to see in future Micro Four Thirds cameras and lenses.
0:00 - Intro
0:29 - Higher resolution
1:25 - Cooperate with Panasonic
2:16 - More computational photography
3:58 - More video lenses
5:05 - Improved tracking autofocus
6:31 - The wrap

You are comparing the OM1 against the A1 and Z9? A 2100€ Camera against a 5500€ and 7000€ Camera? I agree that the upgrades could or should be better, but I think that would be better to compare the OM1 against other Cameras like the Z6ii, R6 or A7iv. I think that the people are very unfair with the OM exactly like they were with Olympus. OM doesn’t need more quality or more technology! They need more support from KZbinrs… and they need to change the public perception about their products. Because it seems that doesn’t matter how good their products are… for the KZbinrs they should be better. We are talking here about a 2199€ Camera with characteristics that no other Camera has.

Cameras have really gone in a „go big or go home“ territory which is unfortunate for micro four thirds. The GH6 will without a doubt compared to the A7S III the most even though it may be cheaper than even the A7 IV and completely blows it out of the water in terms of video specs.

They also need to stop focusing so much on wildlife photography and encourage other genres, especially in their visionary programs, if the want to get more pro users. Their cameras are perfect for photojournalism and documentary work, sports and most other genres. I shoot live music with my EM-1ii, and that is usually the preserve of full frame cameras, but I’ve found it works as well, if not better than my old Canon 6D, which is also 20mp.

@@chrispatmore8944 while I agree with you, if marketing wants something interesting and immediately desirable to demonstrate the improved strengths of this new camera, it makes sense that they’re going to do so through travel, wildlife, and experiential photography. Documentary and street-as interesting as they are for photographic purists and documentarians-won’t have the same immediate appeal, at least not at announcement time. Perhaps some of their visionaries have a specialty in documentary and street work, which will be showcased at a later point. One thing wildlife photography does illustrate very well is the camera’s ability to focus accurately upon unpredictable subjects in environments that aren’t necessarily photography-friendly. So I get it that they are using this approach for marketing purposes.

I'll choose lower noise over more megapixels every time. If there is a technology that can provide more mp it's fine, but it's absolutely not necessary, some great cameras are 20mp like Canon 1DX III, Canon 6D, Nikon D500 and no one complained about this. Also I have never had complains from clients that the resolution is not enough. For the communication about Olympus and Panasonic I completely agree, but I think probably there are some patents and propriety algorithms that both of them are trying to protect. With that said how is the situation with the Sigma / Tamron lenses with IS for other systems, are they working together?
@KrunoslavStifter
@KrunoslavStifter 2 жыл бұрын
Well in terms of noise reduction, AI tools like TopazLabs Denoise AI and DXO Deep Prime AI are making many of the older lower sensor cameras feel like new. Give it a try. You can shoot up to 6400 - 8000 ISO with MF3 and get super clean files. You do lose color fidelity, detail and dynamic range at high ISO compared to base ISO, but that is the case for all camera unless they feature dual native ISO mode. But compared to previous methods, this new AI technology for cleaning noise is giving new life to older cameras or small sensor cameras. So I think some of the demand can be offloaded to post production. I would therefore prefer the companies do things we can't in post production. Features in the camera, ergonomics, battery life etc.

Hi DPReview, my advice to you (hehehe) is to make a study of what Olympus/OM System users think is important. I can mention a whole list, like ergonomics, look and feel and build quality but the one thing is of course portability. OM System managed to cram a lot of better technology and better weather sealing in just about the same size of body. I think OM System has listened very well to the whishes of the Olympus users (higher ISO, lower noise level, more dynamic range, better weather sealing and so on) and started off really well. And it is only the start.

I think Olympus could be a major contender in video but it would require a dedicated timecode port, keeping proper timecode, internal RAW for video, and sadly four years after the release of the Blackmagic Camera for $1295 ... @@ricseet4095 I own the original EM1 (so the MK1) and it's great for photography even in 2022. With video workflow (the time involved not just in shooting but preparing for the edit are essential). The best video requires good audio so you need an external way to record it and then a good way to bring all that together. Don't know what kind of video you want to shoot but if it involves actors or someone being interviewed I highly recommend the Tentacle Sync products. Track E is an awesome Lavalier mic and 32 bit audio (kind of like having RAW audio -- you can make someone louder or quieter without any noise) recorder that uses time code. If you use Track Es for your talent and then a Sync E with a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4K importing and having all your video and audio footage synced is a dream because of time code which is standard in all professional film and tv productions for that reason.

Agree about computational photography--it should engage by default in IA mode or make a CP mode on the dial. No one is making the basic camcorder really, so a power zoom is an interesting idea, not sure if anyone is interested. The lens issue where certain features don't work on other cameras is totally ridiculous. Also, if you can have 4K on a 2/3" sensor you can have 8K on a 4/3 sensor. Even if you don't use it you can downsample the 4K.

The sensor in those cameras is already superior to FF sensors. You don't have 2 stop advantage, it is at best 0.3-0.6 stops at the same ISO. You get 1-1.5 stops benefit only with the base ISO vs base ISO, and that is like ISO 50 vs ISO 200 or ISO 100 vs ISO 200. And that is where the win is as you rarely get to use low iso in dim light, and when you can use low ISO it is in bright light where sensor benefit isn't really there. The equivalence hypothesis claims 2 stops difference. In reality it is 0.3-0.6 stops difference, and that is nothing at all.
@IvorRackham
@IvorRackham 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting to hear your point of view. Whilst I agree with some of your suggestions, I do have to disagree on others. Most Olympus/OM System users see this as a big leap forward, much bigger than the progress from the E-M1 Mark II to III. Fake digital bokeh, you say? No thanks. There's a big difference between using the camera's computational abilities to achieve shots within the laws of physics and adding fake digital effects. The whole shallow depth of field not being achievable in MFT is a myth. Furthermore, a lot of photography requires more DoF not less. Besides, a completely blurred out background is a look that became a cliché in the last decade and it being rejected by progressive photographers. Smartphone panoramas are less likely to succeed than what is achievable in specialist software on computers with more processing power. I prefer stitching images in post-processing. Also, High Res mode is quickly accessible through the super control panel or the drive mode button on top of the camera; you don't have to delve into the menus to find it as you suggest. Moreover, it is possible to have one of the custom modes set to any combination of settings, so switching from bird in flight photography to a high definition landscape just requires turning a dial a notch. I agree that closer working with Panasonic would help the user, but the lenses are far more interchangeable than say Nikon, Sony and Canon. Would you propose that they all use the same mount? Wouldn't that be great? Personally, I am glad that it is a 20 MP sensor. It's all I need. After all you only require around 8 MP to print A3 size at photo quality. Additionally, the file size of bigger sensors is ridiculous, and I don't want that. The huge increase in dynamic range and the superior noise reduction in camera is a real boon. Thanks for the interesting video.

Couldn't disagree more on the resolution issue. The biggest limitation for me when I think about smaller sensors are low light sensitivity, noise performance and dynamic range. 20 mpx is plenty for MFT. I'd much rather they keep it around that and focus on the stuff that matters, not cram more pixels into that small sensor to the detriment of the stuff that matters.

In terms of high resolution, the problem they have is that the 20MP M43 sensor is very pixel dense already. It’s equivalent to an 80MP full frame sensor. This would also be better than increasing the native resolution of the sensor since you would not be hitting a new diffraction limit. Yes, agree, that would be quite important. High res mode in M1III takes almost 1sec from taking first frame to last frame ... even at fastest shutter speed of 1/8000. And that is often too long even in landscape when even only a slight wind is moving leaves and bushes. So therefore the high res mode is not suitable as often as I wish it would be. And the new M1 seems to be doubling speed, but what we need is about 10x speed.

All good points. Fully support the computational photography opportunity in M43. A big attraction of the system is the compact format with lens interchangeability. At the end of the day, the only thing that comes between the subject and the sensor is the lens and this is where M43 can really add to its value proposition. OM (and Panasonic) offer excellent optics, all in compact forms that make getting out and about with a camera enjoyable. This too adds to the value, as it is also an axiom that the camera that is convenient to have with you is the one that you will use.

That 12-100 f4 rehoused as a power zoom with a long focus throw would be amazing. I bet they would sell a lot of those, including perhaps to me. Coupled with an XLR solution, it would turn the Micro Four Thirds cameras into essentially workhorse camcorders for when you need that sort of thing. With that, you could put an OM-1 in the back of a venue and record a whole wedding, presentation, etc. unmanned and not worry about the image going out of focus. Remotely control it and send the lens through its full zoom range to set the scene before you frame the shot. Great idea, boys.

What is the purpose of more resolution and isn’t it a common knowledge that diffraction in M4/3 is the limiting factor in how many pixels a small format system can have ? 16 Megapixels is already quite a stretch and equivalent of 64 Mpixels in full frame sensor pixel pitch wise. Therefore 20 Mpixels is equivalent of 80 Mpixels in that regard. That’s a lot of optical resolution to ask from a lens.

But I couldn't agree more with all of these suggestions, especially the playing-nicer-with-Panasonic and the missed opportunity of not pushing computational photography more. That said, I'm hopeful that this was the best they could do in these initial commercial circumstances and I hope they receive a lot of sales.

Since m43 already produces a fairly shallow dof all they would need to do is provide an option to further blur already defocused areas of an image. More like bokeh enhancement than anything. It's a tool and nothing more. More tricks means more creativity, not less.

I agree with you guys with one exception. I said this on Peter’s channel they are at mercy of the sensor manufacturer (Sony). You done think Sony can’t make a 43 sensor that can match if not exceed the read out speed of the ff sensors. Also why 12 bit and not 14 bit. Do that and include at least one cfast slot and they have a sport action camera that competes.

Yep, agreed on all fronts. Especially insightful that if both Olympus and Panasonic were more open with each other, they'd both probably sell more lenses. Personally, I'm shocked there hasn't been way more computational features. Having enjoyed Google's work here since the Pixel 2, I would often look at my phone and my Olympuses and wonder, what gives? Why are some shots just more convenient on the phone? I do hope they steer sharply in the computational direction, and truly differentiate from the competition. I wonder if opening up the hardware and cultivating a third party firmware scene would be viable? *shrug*

Sony manufactures the image sensors. They control the evolution of image sensors for M43. Samsung could possibly for an alternative supplier, or maybe HiVision, but these would be non-Japanese suppliers. Panasonic and OM Systems have to work with the sensors they can get. In any case, what is the point of more megapixels? More megapixels means heavier calculations for your computational photography.

As someone who came from using a point and shoot camera with slow power zoom to practice flight photography, having just an EM1-II was a hell of a step up. 20 MP is alright with me and I find for my own needs (switching from birds to snakes to insects on the fly), MFT works for me. They hit my sweet spot- mobility, image quality, price. I wouldn't be in a position to do wildlife photography without affordable, quality gear and my style fits with that system. I think OMDS and Panasonic are fine (although I agree they'd be next level working together). totally agree. I don't see the OM-1 camera somewhere near "wow". Too much wording, too much wrapping, not enough content. Exactly what you said, just for psychological reasons a tiny bit more resolution would have been nice. Lets see if the leaked 25MP sensor of the Panasonic will be true - sounds like a good step to me. On the GH6 the super-weak spot WILL HAVE TO BE AUTOFOCUS. Even if the GH6 will turn out to be the REAL wow camera - unreliable AF will ruin the whole show. Regardless the speed, megapixels, video options, ProRES codec, you name it. If the AF f***s up, the system f***s up. Simple as that.
