C'mon, the Others build that (It's a straight rip of norse mythology). And the times had changed, things were quite for millenia, it's just that magic started to wake up again when no one expected (essentially SNK lol, another story based on Norse myths, that's why there's similar elements). The wall was useless... until it wasn't.

It’s also great to see Tyrion in this vibe. It’s very different from his later acting, I even believe the Received Pronunciation is stronger here - but it’s not out of character. Either he’s still a whole-hearted Lannister here, like a rich snob (no matter his more subtle talks with Jon), looking down on those gritty northerners, and his façade later crumbles, or it’s all a façade to begin with: the way he liked to portray himself in public (the talk with Jon wasn’t public) until his sister and nephew and father made him stop giving a fuck.

I mean to be fair, virtually NOBODY believed in the supernatural shit beyond the wall at that point. Tyrion isn't presenting a crazy statement, in fact he's being entirely honest and frank with Benjen. Like he said Benjen was predisposed to dislike Tyrion, and he took issue with that. Seeing as he lived his whole life with people looking down on him as a dwarf AND a Lannister, this is hardly a new thing. To Tyrion he probably thought "Ah, another arrogant tall person, who sneers at me for simply being different, and wealthier than them, despite me having done NOTHING to deserve it on a personal basis. Let's see what his issue is." And so he asked him. That's why he says "I don't know what I did to offend you." Because he hadn't done anything. He'd just existed near Benjen, and Benjen took issue with that.

This scene always just makes me think of how they changed it from the books- most of the content is the same, the *point* is the same, but the way Tyrion describes it is that instead of referencing giants of "ghouls" (which I don't think is a term that's ever in the books, even if it's supposed to allude to the wights here), in the books, Westeros *has* a couple made-up monsters that people compare the White Walkers to- "Grumpkins" and "Snarks" are, I think, the terms, plus how badly all of Westeros misunderstands what a "Warg" is, which they seem to think is some sort of werewolf half the time, rather than what we see it to be with the Stark Children- a mental connection with animals, for the most part.

@glennolson6505
@glennolson6505 3 ай бұрын
He's seen the evidence of dragons, but their existence says nothing either way about the existence of any other myth or legend. You could argue that confirmation of one legend suggests he should at least be open to the possibility of others being real, but it's still a large step going from 'maybe, at one time' to 'definitely, and still now.' Until he sees one with his own eyes, it's far more plausible to believe that the Giants were simply men of the Mountain's stature, exaggerated through time and tale to become something else.

Even in the books, isn't most of that magic in Essos and largely dormant until the dragons hatch? In Westeros it's common knowledge that magic and dragons once existed, but by the time this takes place the dragons died out, the glass candles don't burn, and as far as the most educated people are concerned, magic and magical beings are all but extinct. We know he was wrong, but based on the avalaible information for a south westerosi nobleman (whobis arrogant and probably at least slightly looks down on norhmen), tutored according to the Citadel's knowledge, there isn't much reason for him to believe magical things beyond the wall are still there, and haven't got extinct like everywhere else.

It was hinted that Aegon the conquerer saw the war coming 300+ years ago and hence he forcefully combined 7 kingdoms under a single rule, to deal with what was on the other side of the wall. Aegon the conquerer was from the original Valaria before the doom struck it down and hence it was hinted that he had some magic or a way through which he was able to identify the threat on the other side of the wall. Dragons refused to go to the other side of the wall when they tried it. It was like either they were afraid or some old magic blocked them.
