Well explained on the card-blocking and resisting a card-block. At 47:38 you have the full card-block as orange is on 2 cards. Orange then sacs into your block on the left and pulls off to 84 on the right to try to get a card off the 50 stack. You have 115 trade. You show off the high 0% roll on a stack next to cap, which is necessary to avoid opening the cap and giving orange a card off the cap. Also manuals to get orange's stack as low as you can in the time you have without costing you extra troops. That's because 0%ing a very small stack is inefficient because you could lose too many troops, manual is safer. Beautiful, but orange played their turn well to give you the maximum trouble and cost you troops, hoping you'd mess up. On the next turn orange deploys without attacking and pulls off to 170 from left cap. You assumed that cap was low because it was a fast fortify but orange tricked you with a hidden stack. When you have the full block and the opponent has no trade and you have a card to take without opening a cap, you should not make any assumptions and just take the card and keep the block on, especially in fog. You're only in a better position once you've had a trade and the opponent hasn't, and you should walk the block forward without opening caps whilst you can, building up a large stack on the position getting closest to their cap so that, hopefully, when you're forced to open that cap you have enough for a brute force block, or at least can prevent them stealing a cap. Your opening the cap was a big mistake that let them steal a cap and get cards. Oops! Don't underestimate the opponent. But this shows how tricky blocking endgames can be, especially in fog when you don't know the opponent cap totals. You were in a difficult card-block situation, since the opponent had more troops than you at the start. Lucky they didn't start blocking you and force you to reverse them, that would be their best play, but they played quite well otherwise with their hidden stacks, although they took too many territories making it possible for you to walk the block and keep it on without opening a cap. You spotted your mistake, and lucky for you they made a bad play and took too many territories to break, which is wrong-headed since trades are so much higher than bonuses and all that matters is cards and position, holding caps. They were forced to lock their cap to get a card, and didn't have enough to steal a cap and defend, but their best play was to hit one territory and leave a block there and hope for the trade on 3 they actually got to be able to steal a cap. If they'd had no trade on 3 they were lost by this play, giving you lots of safe cards and trades without opening their cap. But even stealing your cap was too expensive for this left cap to defend both caps and they lost their troop advantage here. But you then made the mistake of opening the other cap to check it, giving your opponent more options. So not a perfect display. Orange's play in taking bonuses isn't the best, but does cause you problems in having to bring off more troops to block or risk giving orange cards by breaking, so it's not bad, especially if they don't have an infinite-scroll mouse to make lots of blocking stacks and split between caps. But it only delays the inevitable if they don't card-block you, so they're hoping you make a big mistake and miss a fortify. Them having so many trades on 3 was a nightmare for you, which is why you don't start a card-block until trades are high enough and you have more than a trade on your important caps, so you can afford to reconstitute a full block after a trade on 3 breaks it. Orange kept the game going longer than needed, when they were on one cap against a full block they should have fortified everything off, but some players are stubborn, especially if they ever had the troop lead in the game.

Well analyzed, David. I definitely underestimated this player when that 170 stack came out. Later on when I ended up taking that capital, I noticed he was trying to reconstitute another hidden stack back there, as well. Lesson learned as far as opening caps up like that!

Good game! A long grind to get rid of them, but a well organized attack in the process of it. You even leveraged that early 2nd position bonus pretty well! I must ask though, why not just take all of your troops around 15:00 and place them on the territory left of the bridge? You’d likely have double of any of your opponents there, and the trades aren’t worth enough to make the difference to break through. Next turn push through the rest of the way and you likely can finish things shortly thereafter no?

From what I could tell early on, it felt like white was playing a pretty smart game. The only board vision I had was within the bonus that I took initially, so I wasn't positive which territory his cap was on. For all I knew, it was the territory right next to the bridge bonus. Sure, a block from him would be tough to outpace my caps, but I never want to underestimate my opponents' actions. White could have just sacked his cap into me in that instance and hoped orange spared him, for example. Certainly a play to consider, but I never like committing all of my troops off capital just in case someone does something rash that opens the door for the other players. Instead, I left myself cards in case I ran into a white capital that was bigger than I was expecting it to be.

@@C_money Fair enough I suppose. A trace more risk might've gotten the game done in under half an hour, but might also have ended in a disastrous doubletap. I can understand not wanting to take the risk on it. Quite the chokey snowball this one can be. Excellent cardblock on your part, and insanely good luck on theirs to be getting so many favorable cap rolls and sets on 3. Well fought!
