For 2k or less Audi TT 1.8T 225hp. Roadster or coupe. Brilliant little car, fast, reliable, great quality. Nothing else looks like it. Mine was £1800 😊

@hectorae86 Mine is totally reliable. You obviously can't maintain a vehicle properly. You must drive a 2003 Corsa 🤣
@hectorae86
@hectorae86 2 күн бұрын
@andrewwaller5913 depends on your definition of "maintain" I drive a Lexus CT 200h, I bring it to the dealer once a year for mot and fresh oil and filters, that's all it needs every single time. The tires last time, but that's to be expected of course. My girlfriend drives a Corsa actually... 2012 though, but I can't tell you how reliable it is since she only has it for 6 months now. I haven't had a TT yet, but I've always lusted after them... The only reason I never bought one is because I hate visiting the dealer more than once a year... Maybe you got lucky and good for you, that is a great car after all and I wish no ill fortune on anyone.... But those things in general are just horrible to own, data doesn't lie.

@@hectorae86 Mine is 23 years old, I had it serviced, MoT, 2 new tyres, AbS sensor and a auxiliary water pump. Starts first time, runs superbly, done 162000 miles. Had no issues at all in 2024. Great little car, recommendedEd, you can pick them up cheap now.

I have an early S1 Elise (owned since new) and whenever I'm out & about in it people assume that they're way more expensive than they really are, and also surprised that they're coming up on 30 years old.

Great choices gentleman. What do you think about my preferences? For 2 grand I'd follow you with the BMW Z3 or go for a Volvo 850. For 5k how about a Lancia Delta (not an Integrale of course) or maybe even an early Porsche Boxster. With a budget of 10.000 pounds I'd go for Mercedes SL (R129) or try to find a Ford Capri (not that easy, I know). And 20.000 quid would make me the proud owner of a Maserati 3200 (definitive future classic).

I'm with Phil on this one, a nice R52 Mini particularly in supercharged form is a nice little modern classic and good fun to scoot about in. Some great clubs out there as well for all kinds of help and advice.

Well a P6 or a P6B would have to be in the mix for me. But Joe, impeccable taste with the DS. I’ve had mine for 15 years now. It was pretty rough when I bought it but no rust at all….it is Australia. You need access to someone who really knows these cars. I paid $8k for it (4K UKP) for my D Special. . Sounds cheap now. Now probably worth $30k (15 UKP) so it’s been a good investment. Wonderful cars to own once you have them sorted. If you keep on top of things they are no drama.

Good format and entertaining piece gents -like it. But how about a future follow up discussion choosing classics by mainly RUNNING COSTS!? It's much harder to pin down -true..with more variability, but there must be some commonality between car choices? As we all know the financial decision is far more about the running costs than the purchase price, because it's commonly the bigger accumulating number! What classic do you know has been run for the lowest/best value costs? And any horror stories of deceptively low entry price /high running cost disasters?

Ford Puma 1.7. Nice one maybe £3k. Can have rust issues and the like but a tidy one will be worth double that in five years.

Sadly, Atlantic Blue and tan interior does push the price up a bit. But for some reason, Q Division did help out by going for the 1.9. Maybe those laser Omega watches were already stretching the budget. 🤣

Interesting choices. Love the DS suggestion. I had to freeze the pic of the convertible DS just to enjoy the styling for a little bit longer. Had the MR2 mk1 back in the day - best drivers car I've ever owned. My pics were mgf, Jag x308, Hillman Imp Sunbeam/Stilletto/coupe and Elise mk1

I bought 2 Z3's last year both 2.8's with long mots for well under 2k so they can still be bought. I actually think the 1.9 twin cam car can be more fun on the right roads as you can ring its kneck more and not be doing silly speeds.

I was genuinely gobsmacked when the W210 E55 AMG was mentioned. I can't believe anyone could be as daft as me and pick that! I have owned 2 W210 E280's and always lusted after the E55 AMG. I fear I have left it too long, and they are well above my pay grade now.

Love the pearl orange Elise Sports 190 but I doubt you'd get one for 20k. I prefer my own, a Azure blue S1 111S with Dave Andrews 204bhp engine. Cosy and comfy with the original hardtop (until you have to get out....)

Well done for putting a Dolomite in the mix. A 2.5 PI is infinitely better but very hard to find a good one now. I've owned both, many years ago now, if a Sprint is out of Budget the next best is the 1850HL in Blaze with a Vinyl roof IMO, anything less is a Toledo.😀

The only thing missing from my current collection is an XJ6. At the momemt i have a Capri 7k, Cortina 3k, Honda EP3 3k, Porsche 996 10k ,Fiat 500 1k and an MX5 NB £70
@saxonuk14
@saxonuk14 3 күн бұрын
Interesting game. I tried to come up with different options to you, but couldn't think of an alternative to an MX5 NB for £2k, that wouldn't be a total spanner fest. For £5k, I'd probably look at an E39 with a six cylinder engine and definitely without the word "Sport" in the spec (as those are more expensive and more likely to be driven hard). For £10k, my heart says 944, but my head would overrule it and say Boxster S if you have to go Porsche. £20k I would think should get a nice Mercedes, from when they made them with engineering, an R129 six or possibly eight.

As a female car enthusiast, I'm curious to see if this comment will spark a debate: except for the Merc W123 and the DS, I really don't like most of the saloons you mentioned. I guess most women pay more attention to style than men, and the W123 or W210 look so boring.

@ANehmet Mx-5 for sure! I owned one, and I loved it 🥰 Z3, I've always liked the design, but the Mazda is certainly funnier to drive Mr2 is weird looking and too 80s for my taste, but certainly, and interesting car Elise S1, I've owned 2 of them.
