My first car as an 18yr old in 1978, was a 1975 N reg MK2 3000GT, insured in my Dad's name with me as a named driver, you could do that back then!😂 Never even considered anything else, it just had to be a 3 litre Capri. I really wanted a MK1 3000 GXL with the four headlights but they weren't that common even then and after looking at a couple of rust buckets decided on the MK 2. Carnival red with the ubiquitous black vinyl roof and factory sunroof. Happy days.🙂

I have a 2006 jaguar xj vanden plas. I absolutely love the car. My entire life if always admired everything about it till I bought it off my grandpa. He’s now passed and it’s not only sentimental but I can’t wait till I have the money to maintain it and drive it since I have another daily driver I can’t afford both. I’m in a pickle. I don’t have the room really but I don’t want to have to sell it. What should I do?

Will they be worth anything? It’s pristine, sat in a garage and kept for. 60k miles

Had one with the silver pin stripes instead of the JPS gold, when I sold it they were queuing up, nearly got my money back after 12 mths ownership. Mate had a Dolomite sprint and we'd have spirited drives across the New Forest, good times.

What Ford got right and BL got wrong was making very basically-engineered cars that looked appealing and were usebale and easy to drive. The (early) Escort, Capri, Cortina & Granada were live axle, RWD live axle, basic engines with iron blocks & iron heads, BL were messing around with hydraulic/gas suspension, 4 valves/cylinder, alloy heads, fuel injection, overdrive and i don't think that the buying public was that bothered about those features in the 1970s. The Austin 11oo/1300 sold very well and probably would have sold just as well with regular suspension.

Think you will find that the mk2 never had a 1 6 crossflow, was allways a pinto, only the mk 1 had the 1.6 crossflow

Correct, however, it was the Mk1 pre facelift 1300 and 1600 that were fitted with crossflows up until the Mk1 was facelifted in 1972. 👍

My MK3 Capri made in 1983 is my baby. It's got everything. Factory sun roof , tinted glass , 5 speed , open rear Windows , fantastic cockpit and interior , hatch spoiler. , heated rear window , remote mirror , etc , etc . Bought her in 1989. Best car I have ever owned. Been offered 30 grand for her, I don't know if this guy was serious, but I walked away laughing saying she'll never for sale in my life time.

The montego could have been a great car if vw built it instead of just haveing vw golf gearbox ! It looked good still does drove very well modern by comparison to cavalier which was good car but sogy allthough safe predictable handling and sierra ! It was awfull an improvement from cortina but still loose i actually prefered a lada for driveing fun than sierra ! 😂😂 and ladas were better in snow unless you had 2 concrete paving slabs in sierras boot 👍👍😅.Seriouslly though driveing a 1.6l montego from brand new estate was nice car its just soon after myb a year or so things went downhill struts wheelbearings carb steper motor autochoke ! Just poor british quality! Now if it had been built to vw standards it would have been the passat which especiall in estate form was a very simillar car and yet passat then right upto 1995 was 1 of the best cars ive known and owned 3 passats 2 saloons 1 estate 2 montegos 1 sallon 1 estate.Britain had motoring history i know BUT britain as much as im ashamed to say HAS NEVER actually made a good car allways shoddy poorly built unreliable and WILL breakdown !! pretty much FORD JAGUAR LANDROVER RANGE ROVER VAUXHALL EVEN TODAY !! 😂😂😂😂😂

Great review, love the MK2. Slight correction… the normal 1.6 Pinto with the Ford carburettor was 72bhp not 82. The GT was 88.

The MK2 seems to be the most rarely seen version of the Capri these days. There is actually a white one with Gold which I believe are even rarer that. The black and gold cars. Back in the eaely 80's my Dad owned a yellow MK2 Capri 1.6s with a black vinyl roof and the addition of a graphic equaliser which no doubt was the height of sophistication.

Had the 2.0S back in the 70's in the JPS colours,I never saw a GT model in the JPS colours,I started off with MK1 1600xl [DAYTONA YELLOW],then a 2.0S in Roman Bronze,[great colour]wrote that off then the JPS 2.0 last..it took me and my pal Gary down to the South of France and back without a blip..oh I miss them...the soulless cars of today

Love them, many happy memories of driving them. Had a 1.6L, a 2.0GT and 3.0litre Ghia. Would love to have another one if finances allowed, but they are fetching silly money for a good one. I can't believe it's 50 years since the mark 2 came out. Suddenly I feel old.

Great to see such a survivor of a Mk2. But I always preferred the Mk3 with it's quad headlamps and built in front spoiler......just that bit sportier! My first was an '87 1.6 Laser, probably in 1990. It was uncool then as hot hatches were the thing to have, but being brought up on TV programmes like The Professionals and The Sweeney (not to mention the US imports like Starsky & Hutch and The Dukes of Hazzard) it had to be a rear wheel drive coupe for me. That was followed by a few 2.8 Injection models.......now those had the "go" to match its looks! Now I'm into Mustangs.....the Capri's American cousin :)

The Probe all day long, the looks handling and comfort are great. I have a 97 GTS and GT. Great cars, glad I kept them. the 2.5L 24 valve engine gets great mileage, has enough HP for most people's needs. If I need more power, I can get a turbo for it. Modern aro bolt ons are still available. And with a vinyl wrap, my probe looks awesome. People are forever commenting on how cool the Probe looks. The Vauxhall looks like a kindergarten school marms car.

Severe issues with the Mk3 Cortinas handling. Everything else is much of a muchness,i vote the Marina 1.8 TC to be a better car than any Mk3 Cortina. By the way i have owned more than a couple of each car.

Wild how the european probe 4 banger looks Almost excatly like the american 6 cyl gt...At first I though u were reviewing the gt... 93-94 gts were very stiffly sprung, had Aggressive exhausts , less emissions..they handled Taught... the variant you were driving, although it Looks like a usa gt, was likely fitted with the soft 4 banger's springs and struts....would have been cool to see you do a review of these both with their 6 cyl versions...the gt probe is a totally different beast.
