Adding to the question about coexisting with people who are different than you… it always helps me to remember that God is the one who opens eyes and softens hearts. We cannot do anything to save another person; all we can do is love others as Christ loved and speak the truth in love to others. Speaking the Truth (the Gospel) also comes with time. You need to have a relationship with someone before you out right say “I disagree with the way you’re living.” These are things I’ve found in my life that help ease the tension of coexisting with people who are different from me.

As a pastor's daughter I can honestly say...ministry is dang hard and there is so much that goes on under the surface that many don't realize. Satan does not want your ministry to succeed and he's going to do everything he can to try to derail it. Like Sadie said...we're all in ministry. But if someone wants to make it a career just know that it's gotta be a completely selfless calling because the road is hard. You make it look easy, Sadie, but I know the enemy doesn't want you to keep touching lives like you are and I'm sure he's working overtime to thwart you. So blessed by this conversation! I picked up on a lot of little nuggets of wisdom that answer a lot of thoughts and questions I’ve recently had! Going on 5 months of dating an amazing guy and someone I believe will be my future husband! It’s been such beautiful journey of getting to know each other while also being intentional of keeping God front and center and our WHY. Love a man after God’s heart.. I pray women have the patience and faith to believe there is a man of God out there for them. I also love when Sadie mentioned that God can give us certain conviction about things and it doesn’t always look the same for everyone (within the context of scripture of course). The enemy will always try to tempt us in our weakest areas, and where I fall short a sister might stand tall! That please be sure to pray for wisdom and discernment. I myself have family members who don't walk with the holy spirit or God. They instead chose to live in their sins and have prideful hearts and minds. So I know that I shouldn't engage with them. Because they'll influence me more than i could influence them. So know your limits and even when it comes to family. Be careful of what you eat from and who you talk to. Especially if you are newly saved. You have to make space for God and his people, by first letting go what's not of him. I had to let go of not only family and friends but habits and sins I was struggling with. It's hard and a process. But i assure God will guide you through it. Especially when you realize he is your everything and all you need. He will fulfill you. Trust in him and please don't conform to this world or try to fit in. You can't worship the world, your family, and God. Serve others but please God! May God be with you all on your journey, my brothers and sisters! 🙏🏽

This is an unpopular opinion but I think it’s important: Platonic intimacy holds a strange place in our culture - prized, but quickly devalued. We understand friendships are important and necessary, while also often holding the engrained belief that romantic intimacy is the one true, 'real' intimacy, and all else is a substitute. If we had romantic hopes for someone that were only reciprocated friendlily we might likely feel it a disappointment. It's not like there are only two choices here: intimate friendships or avoidance. The church has tried to be a godly voice in the midst of a world seduced by the sexual revolution. But often, the church has swung the pendulum too far to the opposite extreme, also over-sexualizing men and women, by imposing guidelines on not only friendship between the sexes, but even on acquaintanceship. I think by putting up fences, we foster an individualistic, self-protective morality. The Christian message is not "Friends only with witnesses," but rather, "Friends promote holiness." We need to protect one another from abusers, not from godly friendship. We do not downplay the evil in the world or the temptation to sin in our own hearts. We avoid sin, not Christian love. We are called to exercise love, wisdom, and discernment in purity, not to fence ourselves off from engagement with the other sex. Too often, Christians swear allegiance to the cultural belief that platonic relationships between the sexes are unthinkable. In the interest of avoiding adultery at all costs, we segregate men and women from one another within the church. But one another is precisely what we lose when this is the case.

What I can't find in Scripture is any warning about avoiding friendship between the sexes in order to avoid sin. Instead the Bible says, "Let love be without hypocrisy. Detest evil; cling to what is good" (Rom. 12:9 CSB). We are to cling to what is good, not throw it out because sin is possible. Men and women can't be friends until we stop letting the wrong voices tell us who we are. When we listen to the wrong voices, we either become afraid of each other or try to take advantage of or manipulate one another. Apparently, we are all time bombs on the brink of having an affair-or of being accused of having one. Because of this, men and women often feel uncomfortable around each other, even in innocent contexts, and we impose strict hedges on behavior in order to avoid the threat of sexual impropriety. I think most of us instinctively know what constitutes sexual impropriety in conversation and action-but, due to influence from our overly sexualized culture, we tend to scandalize ordinary acts of kindness and business. It becomes suspect to give someone a ride, share a meal with a coworker in a public place, or text the other sex without copying our spouses or another third party.

The church has accepted and semi-sanctified these reductive views: sexuality is good for landing a spouse, but it's a barrier to friendship because men and women can't possibly just enjoy each other's company. We associate all intimacy with the bedroom, so we expect every meaningful interaction between a man and a woman to be laden with repressed sexual desire. That means that all intellectual, creative, entertaining, or conversational enjoyment with someone of the other sex needs to be fulfilled by our spouses. That's an awfully heavy load for one person to bear!

I think best practice is just to keep the coed hangs to group settings. There are different types of intimacy: physical intimacy and heart intimacy. Proverbs says to guard your heart for all else flows from it. I know even as a single person, sharing my heart with someone of the opposite sex is a sure way to lead to "attraction." What I think is missed so much by our society is that sharing your heart with friends of the same gender is so amazing. Especially for guys, it can be difficult, but I've seen firsthand the amazing friendships that are formed when you practice vulnerability. There's nothing wrong with being friends with the opposite gender, but long, one-on-one chats probably aren't wise unless you're truly interested in developing an intimate relationship. I always try to think "what would I do if I was married."

Please take my experience as a warning regarding engaging with the opposite sex when you are either boyfriend-girlfriend or married so it does not end up like my situation where I will be soon divorced. He never assumed the behavior of a married man and kept engaging with the opposite sex and many of his calls and interactions were without my being informed. These engagements later became his affairs. The reason behind not allowing such close relationship with the opposite sex is because when the couple has their arguments, they might go to the other person just to feel better or vent and that venting can create emotions of attachment because that third party (who doesn't even wash their socks) will be advising, consoling, meddling and siding with him or her and that will be creating emotions that should have not been created to begin with. The ONLY other presence in a couple's relationship should be God.

As a guy, here are my two cents on modesty: 1. The odds are, many guys are ALREADY attracted to you. Studies demonstrate, men are attracted to 60+% of women on average. (For teenage boys / young men, probably more like 70% or 80%.) You don't need to find ways of attracting them; you need to decide IN WHICH WAYS you want to attract them. 2. You can dress modestly and still be super duper attractive to guys. In fact, the imagination can be FAR MORE enticing than reality. Don't show everything or give anything away. Leave it up the attraction-generating imagination. Hint at things. Accentuate your natural features rather than displaying them. 3. A beautiful, genuine smile can make you 5x more attractive than a skimpy outfit can. 4. Good posture is surprisingly attractive. 5. Guys appreciate the effort. It’s attractive that you WANT to look attractive. So any solid effort is appreciated. Hair, make-up, skin, whatever. We actually appreciate the little things, even if we don’t know what they are. We don’t really know what you do in the bathroom, but we like it when you look clean and pretty and nice. 6. This should be obvious: Guys are attracted to femininity. Elegance, gentleness, pleasantness, kindheartedness, etc. You can lean into your feminine nature without showing tons of skin. An evening gown that covers everything can be far more attractive than a skimpy outfit.

For the section about modesty, what about girls who are confident in who they are in the Lord and still have no issue with their conscience when they dress immodestly? They are not often open to correction about it since they feel confident and have no desire to be seen, they just genuinely enjoy the style. I want to be able to help them understand that although they may enjoy their immodest and showy outfits without a burdened conscience, the end result is still a stumbling block for guys who are striving to stay pure. What about the idea of changing your actions and outfits and lifestyle to be all things to all people like Paul?
