I usually hit the tree that the deer runs behind with a scoped .270 rifle. My Winchester .30-30 has iron sights. Much better for deer on the run. In the 40 plus years that I've been deer hunting, many deer have been put into the freezer with both. My favorite rifle... Both! I can't choose one over the other. It's the situation and cover that dictates which one to take.

I tried to shoot a deer once when I was a kid, but with my air soft rifle. the pellet just bounced off it. It was hilarious. Still a great pump gun even though it is mostly plastic, kzbin.infoUgkxh4su9YgU1tWmjikirWcKJbjsFLEU62Bc but with care it will last a long time. It would be neat if Crosman would make a commemorative version of this with real wood stock, but of course it would weigh more and cost more, but hey, it would be cool. The included scope is more of a toy, but it does work for backyard plinking. I prefer to use pellets for greater accuracy, but BBs are just as good for plinking. This is not a Red Ryder folks; fully pumped it is 3 times the power of a Red Ryder and can be dangerous if not handled properly. Be safe out there.

@reb10503 жыл бұрын
One of my best killshots was 3 days ago. It was a nice buck, even though it wasn't as big as a few I have killed over the past 55 yrs. of deer hunting. The reason I say it was one of the best killshots is simple. Of all the clips in this video, none compared to the thickness of the woods I hunt in up in the foothills of the Appalachian Mts. of GA. To make a long story short, it was 150 steps from where I was to the deer (which dropped in his tracks). I was walking down a fire lane and watching the woods on both sides. I spotted a doe about 50 yds. away, propped up against a tree on the edge of the lane, and just watched her (as she watched me). After about 5 minutes of us looking at each other, I noticed movement beyond her. All I was able to make out was that it had antlers. But the woods were so thick, I could only get glimpses of him. Finally, after at least 15 minutes, he totally disappeared and the doe turned and headed in the direction I last saw him. I continued to watch her through the scope (4 power) and finally, he showed up again about 50 yds. further than she was. All I could see when he stopped was his neck and head. So, with my Marlin Model 336, 30-30, and a small window to shoot through, I fired and he dropped with a perfect neck shot. When I made my way to him, I discovered how he had disappeared from from my sight. He had dropped down into a ravine and became visible again only after he had come out of it. I didn't even know that ravine was there.

@@pens87668 I have had other Marlins but they were all in the .35 Remington. Actually, that was what I was looking for when I came across someone that had bought the Marlin 30-30 twp weeks before I met him. He had not fired it yet. He was attempting to sell it back to the dealer he bought it from, but the dealer would only give him $250 for it which was about half of what he paid for it. They claimed it to be a used gun and also lowered the price because he did not have the box or paperwork. He needed the money but he stormed out when they only offered $250. I caught him in the parking lot and offered $300 and he accepted it. That was 2 yrs. ago and I have brought down 3 deer with it since I bought it. It even had a sling and scope mount on it and I had a 1.5 to 4.5 scope to put on it. It took about 10 rounds to sight it in at 100 yds. and since then, I have fired it 3 times and watched a deer drop in it's tracks each time.

That neck shot at 5:13 was amazing after the shot at 5:08 was a poor choice. “Take the shot they give you”, yes but that “quartering towards you” shot is a terrible one to take with all the bony protections the deer has from that angle. The deer was hit well nonetheless as you can see from its front legs going wonky when it took off and it would likely have died or dropped off-camera - but maybe not. And it could’ve had enough left in its tank to run to another hunter that would get the kill. Nice save though! You were fortunate that he ran right in front of you and into a big open space! You kept your cool despite the adrenaline pumping and you played it perfectly. You’ll never forget that one! Congratulations! Was that on Pennsylvania?

Practice at different distances with your rifle. 50, 100, 150, 200. Different ammo and grain weight bullets react different out of the same gun. Bullets don't stay flat they are on a curve. Study deer anatomy. High shoulder will pretty much drop them dead in their tracks but you damage and blood up the meat. I go for double lung when ever I get the chance at perfect broadside shot.

The last four deer I’ve shot with my crossbow have dropped within 15-50 yards. The buck I shot last month ran 50 yards before dropping near my dad. Last year I shot a doe with my shotgun, a Savage 220, while she was at walking pace. When I hit her, she didn’t take off as I figure I dropped her immediately. Turns I broke her back leg, and probably within 10 yards of me seeing her past a down log, she was in a bedding position where her head up looking at me. Turns out I broke her back leg. Well she then takes off and I have to chase her through the thicket. As I’m going through the brush, I can hear her crashing, and when we got to the field on the other side, I was finally able to put a second shot in her through the lung.

I know a lot of their hunting takes place in the PA, New York areas. With high hunter numbers and typically dense forest, deer running even 100yds can be lost to another hunter or get into areas that make them unrecoverable. Taking out the front axles on a deer has a way of giving shorter tracking jobs, shots into the higher shoulder area almost always drop them where they stand. I will gladly sacrifice the 2 or so lbs of meat that I would save with a lung shot to cut my tracking distance to zero. No one except those in some places of Alaska really need to hunt for meat. It's far cheaper when all is said and done to get meat at the store for 99% in the lower 48. 400-$2000 rifle, 100-$1500 scope, $40 in ammunition, 200-$2000 in clothing, 30-$900 tags and license, and 4-$7 a gallon for gas tallies up to a grand total of really freaking expensive for 40-80lbs of meat.
