Exactly! We did it a few years ago. Bought current house, gutted and rebuilt it so that it would be good for us as we age and have children and grandchildren to visit and host gatherings with family, friends, neighbours, church. We are now 69. Despite being far fitter than most people my age, I had a massive heart attack in 2020 but we had finished the work in 2019 (apart from a few cabinets). Our motivation: we'd seen my parents dither and not make decisions to move or modify till it was too late and they no longer wanted to think about moving or having work done while living in their house. We have a few friends who have dithered and now regretting it. Weirdly, we had a few folk get quite angry when we said what we were doing when we started in 2014 and we were still just 59. Toilets and shower added to ground floor to complete the original bathroom and the loft en suite that was in place when we moved in. Level surface from front door through the house and the back doors to a patio then wide shallow steps and a slope down to the bottom of the garden. Wider doors for wheelchairs. Microwave low down for wheelchair access. Two wide shallow steps from driveway to front door. Wheelchairs and limited mobility folk love visiting. Once the work was done 'mockers' climbed our new staircase and compared it with their 1930s ladders, they began to see why we did what we did. As for some of the horrible steps from driveways to front door - quite a few very envious of what we did. I'm back to health, which means far fitter than most people 40 years younger. Grandchildren run around ground floor when it's raining outside. I'd do a few things differently and advise folk about that but, on the whole, we got it very right. Time to order a jig ready to build cabinets for our spare spaces and for daughter and son-in-law who now live just an hour's walk away and granddaughter just turned 6 months and started crawling yesterday... on our flat grass

Thanks so much for a fantastic comment, and very glad to hear that you’re back in full health. Ironically it was my parents prompt actions - first downsizing to a more manageable property, then moving to assisted living when my mother was ill, and finally my father moving to a small apartment with regular visits - that prompted us to do this now. We’re not ready to downsize, and the costs of moving - stamp duty alone would cost us >£100k - meant it was the best option for us. 👍

I’m coming up to 68 next month & have been renovating a smallish bungalow into large 5 bed house. L shaped extension downstairs & a total roof off job to create another floor. I’ve done a lot myself, but there are days when it has overwhelmed me. I’m on the home stretch now, so happy days & I can get back to enjoying my retirement.

Me and the Wife finished the reno on our rather large old Farm house in France after 5yrs of constant work (I'm now 64.) Sold it in april and have just found our last home still in France down sized a lot 500sm land compared to 6000sm on the last one, but it only needs a bit of work well we hope it does (Us old Joiners just don't know when to quit) LOL. Your house looks great well worth the effort and cost Hope you and Mrs 10 mins have a long and happy time there.

We managed to move to a bungalow, it took a year of anxiety to get here. Now at the age of 70 I’m renovating not building which involves kitchen, bathroom, lounge etc etc. After 3½ months the kitchen/diner is finished and I’m very proud of what I’ve managed to do. So onto the next phase… I’m too long in the tooth to do real building work and I have to realise my limitations that 9 hour days of graft is not sustainable. We are so happy with where we are and to the degree it’s changed our lives for the better. Enjoy your home looks fab - regards Mike

Thanks Mike! The reality of my situation is that even if I had will to do the work myself, making it into a KZbin project would have made it 4 times longer - yes, there’s a ton of content there, but the reality is that we just didn’t want to do it - we wanted it done. 👍

Just gone through a major upheaval after an oring seal on an upstairs loo failed and meant the bathroom including floors walls and everything had to be stripped out as well as the ceiling below including the kitchen, 3 months nightmare as well as a relocation to other insurance accommodation so I feel your pain.😂

Peter, all looks great. I'm worried that you have a historic building there which appears to have no DPC , originally built with lime, not cement. That cement tanking downstairs is not the right material (it should be kept breathable, ideally with lime again), and may result in more damp problems in other places, or further up the walls above the tanking. It may also give your neighbours a damp issue. Its a common problem that builders unqualified to deal with historic buildings advise as a damp 'fix' but it does the opposite. Not to panic, but if damp problems resurface, this could well be the culprit.
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 5 сағат бұрын
Thanks. I appreciate the input, but it is 1000% not lime or lime render; this is not an ‘historic building’ it’s an old Victorian terrace like tens of thousands of others in London and the builders we chose - and their sub-contractors dealing with the damp concerns - are very experienced working with properties this age. 👍
@joelriley4850
@joelriley4850 4 сағат бұрын
@@10MinuteWorkshop OK I trust your research. If the house is made with cement and a DPC, it makes me wonder why you had a damp problem originally. Failed damp course? Roof issues? Can't think of a reason that tanking would fix unless your neighbour has a waterfall along that wall!

Congrats on the build! Do you still have the Mafell DDF40? I'd love to see a comparison of shelf pin holes using the DDF40 versus the LR32 system, both with the guide rail and just the edge guide. I saw a video from "ExtremeWoodworker" where he mentioned he bought the DDF40 because the LR32 was too much hassle to set up. Its worth noting that he also has the LR32 system. I'd think that will make a great video idea since it seems the DDF40 can "replace" the DF500, almost the 700 and the LR32 system
@10MinuteWorkshop
@10MinuteWorkshop 3 күн бұрын
Thanks! I do still have the Mafell, though it’s the original model. I would never consider it for shelf pin holes though - far too slow! Set-up tile is negligible with the LR32 but tbh I haven’t use either for some time. 🤷‍♂️👍

The finish of the end result looks great! A very generous practical layout for London (most of the UK tbh!). It always scares me a bit when practical hands on people talk about slowing down, especially when they are still very active. I see and hear it from my dad who is also in his 60s. I know it's inevitable but when you're younger I guess you like to believe it won't happen to you 😂 that is unless you're Roger from skillbuilder who is in his 70s!

Getting old? Come off it Peter. We started our major refurbishment of an old stone house in France in 2010 when I was 68. Apart from the roof and a stone staircase we did it all ourselves including all the plumbing, electrics, drains, bathrooms and kitchen plus a new workshop in a detached open barn. In 2016 we started on our house in UK, mostly with builders this time but I did need to do a bit of refinishing as the first builder was rubbish. UK house should see us out as it is rejigged for us to live on the ground floor with two bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs which could accommodate a carer if needed.

@@10MinuteWorkshop Understood. Pretty much what we decided for our UK house which did get done a lot faster. Satisfying to do it yourself though and taking longer did mean we changed our minds several times about important details. A few mistakes in both houses but no regrets overall. Both very nice houses to live in and suit our needs very well. France will be shorter term as if driving becomes a problem it won't be viable.

I cover all the options in the intro video, No Going Back, link in description. Long story short we looked into it but all the things we wanted from a home - location, walking distance to local amenities as well as good transport links across the country and abroad - are exactly what we already have - just that the house needed an upgrade. So we did that. 🤷‍♂️👍
