Our Big Move Journey: Packing Up Our Large Family and Creating a New Home

Something that helped my family when moving was a First In Box. Fill box with things you need the first day at your new home. A change of clothing & pajamas, daily meds for everyone in the family. Sheet sets, towels, TP, paper plates with napkins, forks, spoons, knives. A toiletry kit with toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, bath soap, shaving, deodorant. A meal kit with peanut butter, instant oatmeal, tuna, crackers and soups, beef stew & chili cans.

I was born and raised in the Midwest. My husband and I and our kids moved to Florida and lived there for 20 years. Moved back to my beloved Illinois 13 years ago. Florida changed so much during the time we were there. So many more people, traffic was horrific in our area. So happy to be back to a state with four seasons. I still visit Florida but will never live there again. However, to each their own. I wish you and your family much happiness in the Sunshine state.

Could NOT agree more with you! We were born and raised in Southern California. Moved to the midwest, had our son, and started our family here. Miss many things about Calif, but would never never move back. The hours you spend in traffic to commute, the high cost of literally everything, tons of people everywhere. I love our quiet midwest life and wouldn't trade it. I am also not a heat kinda person, so colder climates are my jam.

Amy, think about cling into maybe having some one do a move in clean, make sure to specify inside cabinets etc.. this way it would be nice and clean before getting there and all you have to do is move in. My daughter in law does move in deep cleans and I know with hers she’s very through.. windows, cabinets , baseboards faucet filters etc.. but then you have less to stress over when you walk in the door.

Oh I remember moving and how tiring it was!! A new home is exciting! I loved decorating and exploring every nook and cranny 😊 At least you will finally stay warm🌻

Food is pretty "basic" in my country (Belgium). You have cereal, oats, or just a sandwich with some spread (usually Nutella). For lunch pretty much a sandwich (kids take their lunch to school), and well, only dinner needs to really be tended at. I'm sure bread and some spread is enough for during the day, Amy! It's not gonna kill them. LOL!

We lived in downtown Orlando and loved every minute. You have to love Florida for what it is, not for what you’re leaving or for what you wish it was. You wouldn’t move to Florida and expect to build a snowman - a sandcastle, maybe! It will be an adjustment but you guys will make your home a place filled with love and new memories! I hope you’re settling in and exploring by now.

Our son and his bride are relocating to Florida as well. Leaving in two weeks. We will miss them terribly, however, we know we’ve done our best at raising them up to be independent, hard working twenty somethings and making decisions like this wasn’t easy for them either as they are moving away from all they know and love. Hope your family has a safe move to Florida. My sister-in-law lives in Pensacola. Our children/grandchildren vacation in Destin every few years but we are mountain lovers. We leave in just over 3 weeks heading to TN for our entire family vacation. If I could snap my fingers and move all my children/grandchildren/great granddaughter to TN, we would be there today!

My family on my mothers side has always been intolerant to milk, not raw milk but the pasteurized stuff. We don't get the stomach issues. We get respiratory issues. It was far worse as children and then we kind of grow out of it. We never drank glasses of milk, unless it was raw goat's milk from our grandparents goats. I actually can't stand the taste of milk. I went to an allergist once for a totally different issue and he asked me if I drank milk. I was like no, gross! He said good, cow's milk is for baby cows.

Since you are moving to Florida try and find other stores other than Publix because it’s expensive store compared to all the others. I’ve been living there on and off for last two years and found that out right away. Been traveling with his work so reason for off and on. ALDI there is the best or dollar tree, Walmart.

You are like me lol I stay up all night and get things done, when we move into our new house everyone stayed up late doing their rooms but I continued until after 3 am, then my son came up and we were like “ oh! Looks like we’re both still staying up doing stuff” he too couldn’t sleep until major stuff and wiring was all done up before sleeping- all fun, and an adventure really lol. Girl you have lots of energy. I’ve moved 9 times in 40 years. You will need a cleaning box, a box of disposal paper products for the kitchen and paper plates, forks and spoons, paper towels and cups. A box for the bathroom toilet tissue, some bath towels, soap, shampoo, and a shower curtain toothpaste and of course all the girly stuff you’ll need. Pillows and blankets. And change of course clothes. Best of luck.

My daughter gives my grandkids organic cow’s milk. The pediatrician said plant based milk doesn’t have the same nutritional value. We use cow’s milk for the same reason we eat beef or any other animal product for that matter. I use almond milk myself but the growing kids need the nutrients that I don’t need.

i moved 7 times. things I've done to help the move. I would put a number or a color on each box and put a corresponding color or number on each room. for example a red mark on all the boxes that go in the kitchen. and in the doorway of the kitchen put a red post it note. so people wont ask hey mom where does this go. the rooms are color coded
