We’re very glad that you folks survived the rain! We try to let folks know when they move to the desert to look uphill to guess how much water could flood across their place. There are several thousand acres uphill from our place. Fortunately most of that water gets channeled to a draw that can get to 100’ feet across with water moving around 25-30 mph! One thing to think about is how much water will flow if you get 4-6 inches in an hour or two. Thanks for sharing your footage - hopefully it will inform others. Take care.

30 mph??! Only if it is falling off a cliff. That is over 40 ft per second. Would result in huge cavitation damage in solid rock.

Thank you this was very well done. Nice to see how the rise and fall went. I wish this was a rare event but it won't be. Having been up to my eye balls in climate change science at OSU in 2010, I came away very sobered up about how weather events were going to change. One of the phrases that stuck in my mind living in rain central here in Oregon was that our annual rainfall amounts would stay the same but the delivery would change. More "intense rain events" they lectured. Those have already come to pass here, we have more sunny days and rain can easily dump 4 times more rain at a time than we ever saw 40 years ago. Your trenches might better become canals. This won't be the most water you see for very long. Wish you all the best. Love your dog.

Glad it was helpful! 🙂 Our son-in-law who has grown up in the area, always called the big grass on the property swamp grass. That was one clue that those areas might flood. It might be some time before you see a really big rain on your property, but you can tell a lot by looking around. You can often see the low spots where the water has run. Especially if you are on flat or downhill land, build on a high spot, and make sure you build up your pad. Congrats! 😊🏜️

my fave time to get out and shovel trenches to redirect water is right after the rain stops when the water is flowing, I've had to do it several times when our SV monsoon storms hit, and I see a back up of water in places, or water going where i dont want it! Im thinking about building a retaining pond at my place too and redirect all my driveway water that flows off the road into, how deep did yall make yours?
@RedandAprilOff-Grid4 ай бұрын
Yes, I love going around with a shovel and directing water after it rains. It's hard to say how deep the pond is. It needs to be larger and deeper. It works well for about 1/2 inch of rain, but if we get more than that it will probably overflow. Red dug it when we rented the backhoe to do our septic and house pad. Now we just do everything by hand.

I agree with another comment regarding being in a flood zone. Too close to the wash.with buildings sitting too low. Although summer monsoon storms can be very dangerous, it's the winter storms with snow.melt that can be far more devastating. There are winters where we receive storm after storm. One year we barely had a break from the rain. A lot of bridges were closed, Residents of New River couldn't get out, and several people lost their lives. Not long ago several long standing properties were devastated by an overwhelmed wash. Properties destroyed. I really hope you take the time to look at the flood plain maps, study the topography, and make the necessary corrections. You can loose everything.
@RedandAprilOff-Grid3 ай бұрын
We appreciate your concern. This was an unusual rain event. Permits do not allow structures to be placed in a flood zone or too close to a wash. Yes, we looked at the flood and topography maps, and we technically are not in a flood zone. We were in a bit of a rush when we originally set the shipping containers, but it is working out fine, and we can do more if we continue to get big rains like this. We may never see this much rain again, but even if it happens again this year, we know everything should be fine. Winter and spring are very dry here, and snow melt definitely isn't an issue. 🌞🏜️

With this much rain it would wash out. I'm also pretty sure it's not allowed. It could cause flooding issues upstream.
@vossejongk4 ай бұрын
@@RedandAprilOff-Grid my suggestion would be a double row of big rocks and another row on top of that, with a cover if smaller rocks in front of it, approx a meter high, that shouldn't cause any issues upstream and I think you'll be amazed at the results it at first traps debree and small rocks, temporarily storing water letting it infiltrate. As the water is slowed down it also deposits sediments, flattening the area allowing water to spread out and slow down, allowing even more infiltration. Eventually you restore ground water levels allowing more and more plants to survive. Maybe start with a smaller side stream if you have any near your place? Love your ideas for the place btw!

Yes, we want to get an inner tube for next time. We were still able to lay on our backs and float down the wash. It was pretty fun! 😄

Glad to have you back. Have you considered investing in berms and swales?
@RedandAprilOff-Grid4 ай бұрын
Yes, I would love to get a backhoe out here. There's a lot we could do. It may be some time before we get another rain this big. These storms are pretty hit and miss, and we usually get missed.
@michaelcravens37674 ай бұрын
looks like you need to put in some berm and swales that would help redirect the water and allow you to set up some settling ponds.
@RedandAprilOff-Grid4 ай бұрын
We have some as shown later in the video, but it would definitely be nice to put in more. There is also a large berm on the property that needs to be repaired.

Try to slow the erosion down with rock dams
@RedandAprilOff-Grid4 ай бұрын
We don't have many rocks around here. I really like going out and directing water after it rains, but this was a bit much!

Big berns and swells you need..for sure the flood will go through it and not to your home
@RedandAprilOff-Grid4 ай бұрын
The sand bags and trenches should keep the shop from flooding. This was an unusual rain event. We don't want to block water coming in from the smaller rains we typically get. Our house is not at risk.

Time to dig rain ditches to direct water….

@@peterdement We would have to block our road to do that. With normal .25 to 1 inch rains we like the water that comes into the property. We have been digging trenches and directing water to trees and such. There is a long berm by the wash. It creates the swampy area we showed in the video but it has some places that have washed through. We tried to fix it, but it basically washed out a cave and we would need a tractor to fix it. Maybe some day we buy or rent a tractor, and we could do some fun stuff with it. 🙂🏜️

Diverting water, not from your property, is risky, physically & legally in AZ. Water rights are strongly protected by owners. See ADWR.

Thanks! Yes, the storms are pretty hit and miss around here. We have tried a little panning in Colorado years ago, but haven't tried it here.

Too bad you have no capture system in place

We have some that are shown if you watched the whole video. More would be nice, but I'll have to talk Red into buying or renting a tractor first. 🙂🏜️

Did the insect population explode afterwards?
@RedandAprilOff-Grid3 ай бұрын
We have lots of butterflies! It seems like we have had much less pest bugs so far this year. The grasshoppers are starting to get big, but so far there seems to be less than last year. The tadpoles in the pond eat most of the mosquito larvae, so the mosquitoes haven't been too bad either.

I remembered this video while watching another on home technologies. Perhaps the following dirt preservation systems could be combined with the sand from your recent flooding. (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKKqk6Fqf9CKhJIsi=LCMtkRUKV-mcr0co). Alternatively, used vehicle tires could be sand filled in the wash areas that are most susceptible to erosion. Using self tapping stainless steel bolts could link tires into grid structures that are filled with sand, gravel or soil. Wishing you and your family a blessed autumn season filled with gentle seasonally appropriate weather and restful evenings together. Peace

The water collects low spots and is directed to trees when we get smaller rains, but this big storm was more than we could handle. We don't want to flood anyone upstream.

Never a good idea to construct a home and outbuildings in a river wash gully.

True! It's also not allowed. When you get this much rain this quickly in the desert, it all has to go somewhere. No issues at all with our house, and the shop was fine.

We knew 3 inches of rain could happen out here, but we weren't excited to experience it. Fortunately it didn't cause any real harm to the shop, and the water stayed plenty far away from our house. With the sandbags and larger ditches, the shop should do better next time.
