Considering that is was a mid-sixties style, it really looks like it doesn't come from any era. The under fender headlights are my favorite feature.

Other way around , the Mach 5 predates the Scramjet by over 40 years and takes cues from the popular 1960s Anime series Speed Racer and the lead car, the Mach Five. The front and rear fenders resemble those found on the Alfa Romeo 33/2 Coupé Speciale

Im technically a millenial born in 89.And I love all iterations of speed racer.Grew up with the original reruns on cartoon networks toonami.Man those were the days.And have even forked up the 300 bucks for the limited funimation blu ray release of the japan Mach go go go Both the 60s and 90s version.

Well, I’m a Baby Boomer (yes, I’m “old”) and I remember the original airings of Speed Racer when they first started showing it here in the fall of ‘68. EVERYBODY was talking about it…..even the girls! It was a battle to watch it on TV back then as we only had one TV set and it came on the same time as “Dark Shadows” (anyone remember that??). 😉

To my eyes, the original cartoon Mach 5 appeared to be a customized 1957-‘58 Ferrari 250 Testarossa. The cartoonist (Tatsuo Yoshida) was apparently a big Ferrari fan. I scratchbuilt a 1/24 model of the Mach 5 many years ago in the ‘90’s……I still have it in a case. 😉 Yes, Speed Racer was my favorite cartoon in the ‘60’s as a kid and in fact, I have all 52 episodes on my hard disc including the original Japanese opening theme song which sounds quite……interesting. 👌🏽

Mark’s (owner of Gotham Garage) Mach 5 is parked in the Peterson Auto Museum in California. I don’t believe they lend it out to anyone for any reason. That being said, I’d love to see the final version from the movie, the Mach 6 come to fruition. I may even take a crack at it myself some day as the Mach 5 in my personal opinion is just a bit too “old school” for my young and spoiled tastes. (I’m 27).

not perfect but probably the best looking mach 5 i've seen... smaller size and more 60s "hand made" look... unlike other mach 5 which are way oversized because they were based on modern cars mostly from 2000, and the styling cues doesn't fit the retro feel of the 60s...

He needs to take "IT" apart and start from "SCRATCH"!!! That car doesn't resemble THE MACH 5 from the anime!!!! Like the side ,the back.and the inside( like the steering wheel is maroon and not red and that thing that the steering wheel is attached to that THE MACH5 in the anime doesn't have. This guy "NEEDS" to watch Speed Racer 5,000 times to get it right. So in other worlds he shouldn't be proud of himself because he got THE MACH 5 ALL WRONG.😠

Like the many Batmobiles around, they are a road going version of the cartoon or fictional TV series. As an example, the radical belt line works in a drawing, but is totally inpractical in a real life, drivable car. Being built on a real car, the Corvette, the steering gear is kind of important to retain. Thanks for watching and posting a detailed comment, Mary.
