I’m a retired elementary teacher (as of January ‘21) and I home school a set of triplets that attend my church. It. Is. AWESOME!!!! For them AND for me! ❤ We go at our own pace and the flexibility on both sides is so very nice! I get to still satisfy my “teaching bug” and supplement my retirement income a little bit. They get a super low pupil/teacher ratio and a curriculum and teaching style geared specifically for them. Added bonus: the parents don’t have to pay a fortune for a private school tuition. It’s a complete win/win for all of us! Find a retired teacher who still loves teaching, but is tired of “the system” if you don’t think you can teach your kids yourself. It’s wonderful! ❤

I started homeschooling in the mid 80's, when it was extremely frowned upon. You didnt dare leave your home with your children until after 3:00. It was still an underground movement in our community. No one wanted to be turned in for truancy. We belonged to HSLDA ( Home School Legal Defense Association - attorneys that would go to court if needed for you).We also belonged to several co-ops which offered a variety of classes. I have Never regretted those years (K-12 for 3 children). It was a wonderful season in our life!

I can't imagine what that was like for you, I am so greatful to have a private umbrella organization in my native state, Florida. It's called Florida schoolers and absolutely amazing, all perfectly legit, legally protected, full freedom and I can choose any curriculum I like or not use one at all and pick and choose from free worksheets, old textbooks, educational KZbin videos, learning game websites. Very fortunate and grateful I am

I have the same story....now all three of my sons have grown , but we also homeschooled them . The youngest 2 from the beginning until the end of high school. Our oldest started when he was in 4th grade. And yes, 2 went to college and one of them to med school...with good careers . The youngest decided to go a different way....now working for in a tech career.. now a manager over the east and west divisions in his company. You follow what God directs you to do with your kids...He will make a way for them.

My oldest daughter has two girls and two boys and has always home schooled her children. The oldest just graduated last week and was the valedictorian of his class and earned a presidential scholarship for college which he will be attending in August at TN Tech in Cookeville and majoring in computer science. All her kids are great in behavior and also active in their church. Makes me feel Blessed!

ALMOST everyone thought no way could she pick up on reading and infact she was not good at all at it at first and I had to go over first grade twice in this area but look NOW! It's amazing how it really all works out. :) GOOD JOB MAMAS AND PAPAS

Parents today let society raising their kids and wonder kids has abandoned and behavior issues Parents need to be more involved your kids life. During lockdown, i offer to homeschooling Toddlers and kids so they wont fall behind. Parents told me i dont know nothing about raising kids. I said i dont need to be a parent to read, write, maths etc..Thats common sense.. Whenever God Bless me with childrens, i always want to homeschool my kids. Growing up in public schools was bad. You cant learn everything, because teachers have to deal with disruptive children that take up the entire class time. I saw the corruption in school from some teachers, school board etc. Teacher would tell me, they wish parents help them with their homework etc.

I had the SAME EXPERIENCE where teachers would say I wish parents would parent there kids and work with them and teach them. So many kids in the Milwaukee Public Schools would yell toss everything and any thing at the teacher while his or her back was turned in facing the board even saw a whole desk with the chair attached hit a teacher in the back while trying to teach us. There's NO way I would let my child go to school and now a days it's only gotten worse with School sh00tings and more... How about drag Queen story hour even at our public Libraries. Or how don't tell if the child goes into the sch00l nurse and the child is on meds for a child se% change. But the parent can't understand what the heck is happening to there kid and why they are acting like... Talk about stealing a kids childhood. There's No way any parent should let them into a school today. I mean I don't understand why ANY parent would let them when anyone can walk into a school and Sh0000000t it up cuz the teachers and everyone is Not armmmmmed. CRAZY! This just shows us one thing it's never worked for ALL staff to be unarmmmmmed so why would you put your kids in Dea!h lotto. So many have be lost to these gov controlled sch00ls but NO ONE EVERY BLAMES the G0v schools. I have seen knifes in schools I have seen drugs in schools I have seen kids plotting on how to hurt others and where to do it and what time... They are PRISONS Not Sch00ls. call them as they should be and they would be called indoctrination camps. Bless the parents that home school there kids. To those that can't I pray for your families.

I have home schooled my son for 10 years. We started in 1st and he is almost ready to graduated high school (he will be done with course work except geometry this year). We tried 1st but by Thanksgiving we pulled him. It was the best decision we ever made!!! I can adjust what I teach him by what his interests are. I can adjust when he wants to do school work which is usually 10-11 o'clock at night. That's okay. That's when he learns the most. Living in AZ there are very few "rules". You must teach 4 subjects and then it's up to you. I create my own diplomas, report cards, records. I don't have to file any reports. It's time for me and my son to connect. He is learning about gardening and chicken raising to an extent. He's learning the importance of chores and why they have to be done. He understands that God is the center of our life and to Him be the glory. Would I do it again? YES!!!

I was a homeschool mama, then a homeschool grandma now the second batch of grandkids are here and I am asked once again " Can you homeschool our kids mom" the answer is always the same. I have 30 years experience homeschooling and I believe it is the best choice. We schooled on ability not age. Just because you turn a certain age doesn't mean you magically ate at the same level as your peers. When people ask "what grade are your kids in ", I would ask "What subject ?" You see kids learn at different rates and not all subjects are easy or hard for them. Well I could be on this soap box all night. If there is a will there is a way.

I've been homeschooling for 15 years and boy is it not for the faint of heart! Lol now that I have teens it's gotten even harder for me to get them excited about learning and so many days I feel like a complete failure but then I meet some public school kids or hear stories of 10-12 year olds doing crazy things and I take a sigh of relief knowing we've done the right thing and it was all worth it even if we arent perfect. Public school is just the fastest way to kill a childs spirit and when I was my daughters age I was doing/selling drugs, having s*x and eating disorders, was suicidal and exposed to things I shouldn't have been and I'm so incredibly grateful and proud that my kids are happy, healthy, responsible, calm, modest, independent, creative deep thinkers that are doing age appropriate things! Side note, scouting has been great for my kids and for anyone interested, there are girl and coed troops now. My oldest is currently a crew captain sailing around Saint Thomas😊 I was worried they would miss out on things like public speaking, leadership, conflict resolution, working for a team/the greater good, ceremonies for achievements etc. but scouting has checked every box we needed, hallelujah!🙏 As far as socializing, it's really not difficult. Local churches often have programs and we also do sports, classes, go skating and swimming, hang out with neighbors and attend camps and events. Homeschooled kids are always mature(and nurturing to littles) bc they're used to socializing w all ages and that's one of my favorite things about the social aspect. And like you mentioned, having the world to yourself during school hours is positively amazing! It's also way cheaper bc a lot of places have discounts for homeschoolers like trampoline centers, wonderworks, children's museums, skating etc. And when you just want to travel, it's not only cheaper but so relaxing to have the place all to yourself w no lines! We typically only travel in Oct or jan/Feb to miss all the holidays/summer and its amazing how much you can save in the off season! The kids and I stayed in Costa Rica for a month on $10/day and that's just not possible during the busy seasons. We also spent 2 winters in a beachfront condo in Destin while working on our house bc the rent for the entire winter was less than 2 weeks in summer lol

All of my children attended public school and have gone on to college to be professionals, I think it's important to expose kids to real world life, but most importantly teach them how to speak up against things that are not inline with their beliefs, core values and morals. Teaching children to think for themselves and being able to identify indoctrination will benefit them in the real world as working adults. Exposure to things in life that we may not agree with, can actually be a learning experience in and of itself. I believe there can be silver linings to both homeschooling and public school. The most important thing we can give our children is love, sound advice, along with teaching good values and morals, and respect, for not only themselves but others too. And above all knowing God!❤

I understand the logic behind this video in several ways. But, I can also say as a person who was home schooled the majority of my life it was torture. I am still incredibly socially awkward even at the age of 42. I love to hear about children who really enjoy it. I hope that it is really their enjoyment and not something they have been taught that they "should" enjoy. Speaking from my personal experiences only. I should also add that I was not given an option to learn in my own way or follow my own paths of interest. It was very much indoctrination.

You guys have got this figured out! I used to homeschool my toddlers and they used to be super intelligent and sharp, they knew how write and read and do some simple math even prior going to school...but then came the time that they had to go to school and I had to work outside...I quickly began to noticing some changes and although they did well and still above the average, I was not happy with the results that I saw. It felt like they were getting trained to be something else other than their authentic selves. Anyways, they ended up graduating with mostly A's from high-school and attend at the School of Arts (College), and yet, I will always regret not being able to homeschool them instead of sending them to public school. There's a huge difference between those who attend to public schools and those who are homeschooled. In my opinion, those attending public schools are getting indoctrinated and "Programmed" versus those attending homeschooling who are most likely getting trained to freely express their true selves in life's.

I didn’t realize how little my kids knew until they were sent home due to the pandemic. My 1st grader wasn’t reading, my 2 preschool kiddos were not even talking yet, my 2nd grader was supposed to be getting special needs services with her IEP but I found out that she was watching JoJo Siwa videos and fed candy during her one on one sessions and my 7th grader had so much anxiety about even walking into the school building that he would have to take deep breathes and psych himself up to even go in each morning 😢 That summer we were stuck at home both younger kids started talking nonstop, my 1st grader taught himself how to read, my 2nd grader is now great at math but still not great at reading (but it will come) and my oldest was able to reduce his meds b/c he wasn’t so anxious and his facial tics went away since his anxiety was less. We go on weekly fieldtrips and play outside sooo much now. It’s been a real blessing.

We were required to do this. Provided with handouts to give students. Started with acceptance and tolerance. Anti bullying etc. got worse n worse. After 19 years substituted some n kids so much worse. Don’t do any good to call home. Only reason most parents( except “A” students ) wanted to communicate is if they thought we were not giving their child enough attention or upset in some way. If child misbehaved it was teachers fault. Most at risk students do not have a two parent household. Students respected teachers more than they did parents. Wouldn’t believe how students talk to their parents. Administration doesn’t support teachers. It’s bad all way around. I would NEVER advise a student to go into teaching as a profession l. NEVER!!! The school system in our country (USA) is in total and utter shambles. The school system and their facility are in consent fear of being sued for this or that. Who's at fault? We all are. These parents want this and those parents want that. It's a system trying to accommodate all wants of the people, which is impossible. As the saying goes, "You can satisfy some of the people some of the time, but you can't satisfy all the people all the time." There is total chaos in the school system of today. “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!” With that being said. I was/am a homeschool mom to my 3 children all graduates of homeschooling. And by the way, most of our homeschooling had taken place in the state of North Carolina a very lenient state to homeschool in. They were some great years. I miss it so much, being and learning with my children. I highly recommend it. So grateful that the Lord blessed us with the privilege of taking responsibility for our children. For people who are even just a little bit thinking of homeschooling. Be light of heart. There is a ton of curriculum that will take you step by step in teaching if that's what your needing. I heard a mom of a public school child make a comment, "Parents have no business schooling, we need to leave that up to the professionals." I wanted to remind this mother, parents are their child's first teachers and their lifelong teachers and influencers and our children are failing under the "professionals". Also, what constitutes a professional for her? Someone with a degree? Experience? Will as far as experience goes? We have all been educated either in school or at home. Learning as it has always been is in the will and want of the pupil of any age, old or young. You are very capable of teaching your children scholastics as long as you are willing to learn as well. Teachers, of all types everywhere, are willing to learn and continue to learn throughout their lives. When my oldest came home to be schooled at the end of 6th grade, he didn't know basic grammar and his math skills had no foundation. I was a parent like many others thinking sending him to school was taking care of his education. That was very ignorant of me and I am the one who is at fault for not making sure my son was being educated and I taking on the responsibility of his education. He grew in his foundational scholastic skills very quickly being schooled at home and continued to excel. The most important skill you can teach is THE LOVE OF LEARNING. If you can teach the love of learning then all is so much easier and you will have lifelong learners. You go Stivers, and have a great time on your journey with your little ones. Blessings

What I also know is... you fight! You advocate for your child, your school, your teachers, you fight. You don't roll over and say "pull them out". Home school is not the answer for everyone. It is wonderful for some, a nightmare for many and there are variables in between. My students were respectful, my grown children are teachers and respectful and my grand babies are in public school are respectful. This is not a fair representation of public schools at all and it is very sad to hear such a negative representation of the good people working in public school. There is balance in everything.. this isn't it.

Thank you for having the barn chats. So I'm new to homeschooling, But you bring up some really good points to figure out. Like I'm not even sure how to register for homeschooling or if I have to register with our state. Everything seems so confusing but I think it's just because I'm so new to it all.

Homeschooling is amazing. It isn't super hard to know what needs to happen for you to afford to stay home. The hard part is actually doing it, we hand washed and line dried laundry for a long time, tossed the dish washer, turn your backyard into a garden for food........ heck, maybe you have to go on food stamps for a bit while building that garden and getting a plan together for dairy in your yard. It's ok, just go for it, you will not regret it at all.

As a teacher, I appreciate you pointing out the real problem, which is beyond our control. I teach at an alternative high school, which is where they end up “usually” due to not being able to keep up in the big classrooms and the system. Parenting (or lack of) is also an issue that causes so many kids’ problems, and don’t even get me started on our mental health system!

I've been homeschooling for 16 years. We have done classes and co-ops and I feel like we have found a good rhythm. All four of my homeschooled kids have played Competitive Christian Homeschool Basketball. It has been such a character builder as well as keeping them in shape. I am so glad I listened to God's voice and my husband listened to me all those years ago. I have had valuable time with my kids. I see so many kids lost in this crazy world we live in. My kids know who they are and are very grounded in the Lord

My kids went to PS. All 4, same school system all the way through. Youngest graduated before the school system became worse... Common core. Oldest kids in High school got up at 5:30 to take the bus at 6:30. Then due to bus schedules arrived an hour before school began. The kids were all given t-shirts with their graduation year on it. Not HS graduation, but also 4 years of college.. College was pushed hard. No wood shop, metals, agriculture, home ec. They all graduated but lacked learning in common real life situations. Bookkeeping, budgeting, addressing envelopes. etc. There are subjects taught now in PS that I feel are wrong. Told my kids to live near home so I could baby sit and homeschool.

When your working on a farm, and homesteading, it ends up being a lot longer than an 8 hour day, the difference is, when you love what your doing, it doesn’t seem so much like work! I mean everybody has their hard days no matter what you work at, but I would much rather Homestead, and farm, as to go to a 9-5 any day! It’s simply something we love though! I know you guys do to, it’s definitely not everyone’s cup of tea, I can’t imagine my sister on a farm! 🤣🤣🤣 if my kids were school age again, I would definitely homeschool, this world is totally upside down compared to me growing up, man, I wish we could flip a switch and make everything simpler in life outside of the home and farm! God Bless!

I wanted to home school my Granddaughters so badly, but my daughter-in-law won’t even discuss it. It terrifies me that they are learning garbage. My older Granddaughter is already looking at colleges, and that terrified me even more. I did teach them to read & write cursive. I didn’t give their parents a choice on that one. I did it as a game whenever they stayed the weekends with me. 👍🏻

Respectfully, that isn't your decision as the grandparent. I know it's from love and concern for the grands, but it might be better to judge your actions based on the relationship and not your fears of what could happen if they.... We live in a fallen world and they are going to be exposed to stuff. As far as sending one to college, I get the mindset when they are young but by the time they are 18 and up, you are talking about entering into adulthood. They need to be given some freedom to make their own choices. The end goal in parenting is to raise adults and let them stand on their own two feet. None of this said to be mean or hateful but just a few thoughts.🙂

Correct. I attended Catholic School in a small town and a Public School in a large city. In the 5th grade I was put into a Special Education Class (one of the first in our area). I could not read nor write and had zero math skills. I did not prepare for College because my mother was told that I was not college material by a counselor. I graduated High School with a C average. I attended a Jr College under a special program for Hispanic Women. A WHITE man PAID for my education. He and his wife had no children so helped several of us. Because of this man I have several Certificates and Degrees. I have taught many students with Learning Disabilities. I always start their First Lesson with "You are Not Dumb. Teachers have FAILED to teach you".

Because he is around Adults most of the time he goes to a co-op class where they teach life skills and he is with other kids plus because of the way schools are they are homeschooling him. I am so thankful they are doing this. He has chickens and all money he makes goes to him and he feeds and cares for them. They are raising him right. I wouldn't dare put a child in Public school this day in time.

I'm 71 and SOOOO greateful my two girls are in their mid 30's and for the majority of their school years we lived in a small rural town, Henryville, Indiana. Great schools and access to good church run day cares. After a divorce we moved back to Louisville, Ky. when one was starting middle school and the oldest was starting high school. I was blessed to make enough money that I could move to a community that had good public schools in our district. I would so hate to have small kids in today's public school system.

I have 2 daughters that I am thinking about home schooling them. Nothing against public schools or the teachers but I feel like schools are shoving radical liberal ideals down our children's throats. And sadly, that is likely the reason there are so many laws involving home schooling is becoming difficult. Parents need to boycott public schools until they stop indoctrinating our children. I truly believe in education through the highest level of college. I have a masters degree in Engineering and going for a PhD and it upsets me that I have to do this but I will be more upset if my daughter came home from school and told me: Daddy, the teacher told us we can identify as whatever we want. I decided to identify as a 1994 Ford Mustang. Can we go to Autozone and grab some oil and oil filter? I need an oil change.
