In this video we visit the Pueblo Mágico of Sayulita in the state of Nayarit. We visit a couple of daypass/beach club options (Hotel AzulPitaya, Barracuda Playa), and of course some excellent restaurants (Casa Paraíso Restaurante Bar, Mary's Traditional Mexican Cuisine, Don Pedro's Restaurant & Bar). At the end we give you a tour of our AirBnb, give our top recommendations, and our full cost breakdown for one week.

Hola Georgia and David. You certainly make Sayulita look beautiful. It's just the sort of resort a stressed-out and exhausted worker might choose to get away from it all. Of course I don't recognize a bit of it, other than the waves and the point that shelters what used to be a charming, unassuming tropical village. A very few of the houses on the point may date from 50 years ago, built by wealthy individuals who came from other parts of Mexico. The rest of the fishing village has been literally swept away in the name of "progress". 50 years ago there was Puerto Vallarta south of the Rio Ameca , the little settlement of Bucerias on Banderas Bay between the river and Punta Mita, then Punta Mita which didn't have so much as a palapa to its name (it did have some naked hippies), then Sayulita, which maybe extended half a kilometer south of the point. Beyond Sayulita there was nothing other than a couple of tiny settlements until one reached Rincon de Guayabitos and La Penita. Much of the land around Sayulita was ejidos, common public land held and worked by the inhabitants of Sayulita. Coconut plantations were a common site. In the early 1070s the government acquired the land for future development, probably paying the villagers of Sayulita a tiny fraction of what the land is worth today. There were no hotels (camping in a coconut grove for 25 pesos a day- actually the first time I visited Sayulita I was able to camp for free on the beach), one tiny abarrote in some enterprising individual's living room, no restaurants other than a sometimes open snack stand on the beach, the laundry was a rock in the stream that bordered the village (the road to Sayulita forded the sinuous stream five times), When not in use the numerous ponga fishing boats were pulled up onto the beach, above the high tide line, and there were never more than 6-8 Americans visiting at any given time (sometimes I was the only outsider staying in Sayulita). The Sayulita of 50 years ago fit my budget and more importantly my interests. I got to know several of the vilagers, including one woman whose father had fought in Pancho Villa's army. I'm grateful I saw Sayulita when I did. I suspect most tourists are more comfortable with the Sayulita of today. Stay well.

It is definitely built up. Most of the stores and restaurants are very small businesses we liked the feel but I suspect that we would have felt differently if we were there in December or January. I don't think I would have enjoyed it if it were as rustic as you described lol.

Hola Georgia and David. By now you must have left Morelos and arrived at your new destination. Veracruz? Or somewhere else? Did you see everything you wanted to see in Morelos, or did you find many places closed? Was my list helpful? You didn't mention it, and if my lists are too overwhelming I don't have to keep filling up your comments with material you can't use. You may not have time for more than the pueblos magicos. Have a great time. There are still hundreds of amazing places to visit in Mexico that lie ahead of you.

We are in Coatapec now but leave for Coatzacoalcos tomorrow, after a week there we are on to San Cristobal. We did see a bit in Morelos including three different archeological zones. Unfortunately we both got sick there and it rained every afternoon cutting our days short. In places like Oaxaca we visited a ton of your suggestions since there was only one pueblo magico and we were there a month. In other places like Pachuca we had ten Pueblo magicos to get to and no extra time. From San Cristobal there are only two so we will have time to explore other locations.
