Our cost to Sleep in the car (SUV) ~ Less Than $50 ~ episode 1

Genius!! I have a bad back and neck, so after trying to sleep in my brand new bed I was so uncomfortable month after month, that I finally got a hammock/stand, and now I've been able to sleep like a baby for over a year! I traveled from TX AL FL CA MO LA for 9 months, but I've felt stuck in my 2 year lease that's costing me $1,300/mo, so on Sept 1st, I will finally be able to get back to a $500 monthly budget! So I am thinking of trading my Jeep in for a minivan, so that I can stretch out in a hammock and have plently of space during the day.

That sounds like a great idea... I hope you've gotten it set up and had some time to enjoy it now! The car that I had this set-up in got into a car accident about 2 years ago now, and I'm in an even smaller car.... I miss my hammock setup!!

We did this for several months, and loved it. Currently missing the hammocks, and debate if I should put them up inside the house! Lol Enjoy car camping!!

Just bought a hammock at Walmart on sale for $11 and pvc for $550. Had home Depot cut multiple pieces in case I get a second hammock. Love it so cozy. !

What size pvc pipe did you get I am going to do this this weekend

I belive it was ½ inch pvc....someone suggested wooden dowel rod in place of the pvc. I think that would also work great. Just make sure it's the right size to fit through the hammock...

Did a child size hammock work for you? I'm 6 ft tall and about 186 pounds, and thinking of doing this in my Bolt EV.

Yes, I'm about 5'9", and I had a few extra inches of room..... not something I'd recommend for life though! Lol

That's a creative idea for hanging your hammock. I'll have to look at that option.

Pretty cost effect too. I thought about doing hooks into the top of car to clip the hammocks onto, or building a base to do a stand for them....but never got around to anything else. We used this way for several months while living in car to travel last year. Kept the set up for if we have Hurricane evacuation.

I love it, stayed in this setup for quite a few months doing the #suvlife #vanlife things with our cat. Unfortunately, someone ran into my car and messed it up. Now i have a much smaller car, and miss the hammock setup.

Great idea! So far we did this for several months straight with no issues, but I think that if we did for longer we'd definitely add the dowels!!

This is really clever.. but best way to sleep in hammock is diagonally on hammock.

If theirs enough room to sleep, diagonal ...but that's for outside set up, or solo car set up. We may need to get our cat her own hammock too! Lol

We did this for a little over 2 months straight while temporarily living in our set up, plus several random nights for camping.....it hasn't appeared to do anything negative to them! The weight is distributed between the 2 seats(front and back), and how it sits on the head rest.
