I lived in Manhattan for 10 years before moving to the suburbs and bought a home. Honestly, between cars, gas, parking, putting money back into the home, furniture, utilities, renovations, the cost is about the same. What do you get? More space, quitter area. What do you loose? Most jobs are in the city, opportunity cost and less walkability. The grass isn't always greener on the other side. No one really stays in their home for 10-20 years anymore. You will move again at some point, although that is hard to think about right now. People don't work the same jobs for 40 years anymore and stay in one location for their whole life. The people that can afford an apartment in the city and a home in the suburbs have the right ingredients.

You can save money by decorating yourself and not hiring someone else to do it. I would want my home to feel like a reflection of me, not someone else. You can save a ton of money by thrifting the furniture and lamps and stuff. You can get less expensive sheets instead of paying $150 to $200 for them. You don't have much choice on the hard costs, unless you have a construction worker husband, but the soft costs can easily be taken care of for way less.

Yeah that got me too. Her complaining about all these costs yet spending money on name brands and an interior decorator whose style screams boutique hotel

When I bought my house, I learned how to do things myself. For any serious KZbin viewer, you can learn how to do almost anything. Then with furnishings, "too expensive" is only a way of saying "I picked things that were too expensive"

I didnt get a sense of ‘complaining’ from this video tbh, just a bit of transparency on costs of stuff. And of course, it’s very personal as she’s included decor / interior design costs which wouldn’t be the same for everyone.

HI Sarah, I am a realtor and have a couple of questions: 1. Did you have a buyer's agent to represent your best interests when purchasing your home? 2. Did you do have a building inspection, mold inspection, termite inspection, roof inspection, chimney inspection, and pool inspection? 3. Do you have public sewers? If so, did you scope the drains? 4. Are you on septic? Did you do a septic tank inspection? Yes, all the inspections are expensive, but money well spent. If not, you missed out on all your negotiation opportunities which would have knocked the price down tens-of-thousands of dollars. You certainly shouldn't have been blindsided, like you were. Most buyers don't have deep enough pockets to buy a brand-new roof and mold mitigation as soon as they move in. Plus, I am surprised you were able to get homeowner's insurance with a roof in that condition. I feel bad for you.

Beautiful home! Things add up very quickly. But, it’s all worth it because between you and Louie you guys have a huge family and you won’t regret all the new memories you’re about to make there. Congratulations!🎉

It looks amazing! You can't really count your decor in the cost of fixing up the house, though. All of the furniture, linens, wall hangings, etc. do not contribute to the resale value of the house. I was figuring $30K for the roof before you mentioned the skylights, then bumped it up to $45K. So I think you actually did pretty good with $38K, especially when you consider it's a 50 year roof. I live in Florida and if your roof is more than 15 years old, you can't get homeowner's insurance. In the end, you will be better off with a house than continuing to rent. Mine is now paid off, so I will go into retirement with the entire value of the house in proceeds.

First of all your house is more than three times larger than the average American home. Why do you need such a giant house for two adults and a baby. Secondly people don't usually try and fix up their entire house in the first 4 months they live there. They spread it out over years. What's the rush, are you planning on reselling it quickly or something. And thirdly the quality of the stuff you bought, a lot of it is not very good. For instance that round barrel like coffee table thing with a lid on it in the living room that cracked and you finally got your money back. The reason it cracked is that it's a piece of junk. I'm sure it was a lot of money because pieces of junk cost a lot of money now. I have an older home built in the late 1800s and I'm redecorating the whole thing with quality stuff that I find on Facebook Marketplace. It takes a while, but in the end it's so worth it. I have some unbelievable quality pieces of furniture that I bought for practically nothing because I have patience and I'll take a piece of quality furniture made 50 years ago any day over most of the crap you bought for your new house. I'm sorry to be so blunt, but that's what you get when you're in a hurry. You pay too much for low quality because for some reason you can't wait.

Those skylights are an immediate slay and I basically want my room like Bella’s. The couch such a find and Louie’s uncle made really beautiful tables. You did a lot for $78k and I look forward to Part 2. Your yard is amazing.

Buying definitely makes more sense than renting, although I am not sure if two parents and a child need a 6700 square-foot home. The next shocker would be when you see the property tax bill. The house reno looks great though.:)

You do understand I hope that what you’ve done has doubled your value already and prices always go out. You now own a tangible asset that will just keep increasing in value. Renting is burning money on a monthly basis with no return and no guarantee you don’t end up out on the street. The best thing we ever did was buy our first place (a fixer upper we sold for 3x what we paid in 5 years). We are on our third and final home. It was purchased pre-construction, just completed and it’s currently worth 2.5x what we paid (also it’s in Cabo, early retirement time thanks to real estate karma).

The house looks great. I am surprised the appraiser/inspector didn't catch those things like the mold, roof and chimney issues. Going forward write all of your taxes. Then with the money you get back use that for the projects you need to take care of next. Then write that off your taxes. Do one expensive project every year using the money from your taxes (not your savings or paycheck) and write it off your taxes. Then reuse the money for some house repairs or updates the following year. You could also use some to pay down the debt you might have for the current renovations. After the pool and the basement area are done consider getting a heated driveway as it will help with the snow.

The comments about how owning a house, the house will always increase in value. That may be true, because *everything* costs more over time, but it’s only actually worth what someone else can afford to pay for it. And the arse is gonna fall out of all that at some point because salary increases are not keeping up with inflation in any country that i know of.

I was trying to determine a DYI factor to adjust your total for those without your resources! lol I love how your place looks and the investments you are making will be something you will be able to enjoy right now. We just paid off our home and sorta feel that renting and ownership is a wash. (Our home has appreciated by 500%) What you have decided is to provide a better family lifestyle for your young (and growing!) family. Me thinks when the you are empty nesters that you’ll move back to the city. It will be the perfect move when the kids are young adults. In the meantime, both of you are providing a wonderful place for your kids to grow up. Lots of great memories will be made there. Way to go!

So, you had all these costs before you could live in the place and make it your own. Now I want to know how much your monthly costs are. Insurance, property tax, HOA, heating, gas, water, etcetera. In your rental, many things were included in the rental price, but now that you own your own house, they are all additional.

Think of a house as not only a home but the biggest investment most of us will ever make. You are investing in yourselves, building equity, and putting down roots. We just had our front porch painted and it cost $3K. I had no idea, but we're at an age now where we are hopefully putting the finishing strokes on the house so we can sell it in a few years. That is when we will learn what it is like to live in an apartment again.

The work on the house is beautifully done. We live in Australia, and I did owner builder on our 2 story Colonial house on acerage. What you have to realise is that you now have an asset that only increases in value. Rent money is dead money.

You might outlive your roof. People are living longer these days. I knew you had to replace the roof. It’s a small cost that you won’t have to worry about for 50 years. The swimming pool you talk much about the swimming pool. Put dirt in it, and Forget about it. Maybe put a tree in it. 😊 keep up the good work. All you need next is an elevator. Hello long Jeopardy, because when you get old stairs, aren’t fun.

The house is coming along beautifully. Renting is dead money, at least you will get your money back on owning a home as prices of homes always increase. Pre purchase house inspection may have identified the mould and a need for a new roof. Gorgeous Sarah, love the styling! ❤

Your home looks fabulous and whilst yes you have spent a lot I bet if you was to put it on the market now you would easily make it back with the bonus you’d get to take your lovely new furniture with you, as a home owner and someone who’s renovated a few times it’s definitely paying off now in my 40’s, you won’t regret it
